the Beginning
BOUND TO THE MOONLIGHT
I sighed contently and spread my arms out running my tiny fingers through the sheepskin rug beneath me. The sheepskin tickled my bare legs. I sighed as I listened to the intense wind blow around us in the darkness. Normally I would be out in the darkness scampering around through the long grass and up trees and chasing sheep about but this was a bad storm and so my mother had forced me to stay in. I looked over at my family my mother was curled up in a chair with daddy who was running his fingers though her hair while she slept. I turned my eyes to my brothers as if sensing my gaze Matt looked up and stuck his tongue out at me playfully before he returned to his book. I pushed myself up and padded across the cold stone floor my bare toes making a light pitter pat noise. I wandered over to My eldest brother Michael who looked up at me smiling his dark eyes sparkling he reached up and gently stoked my hair. I nuzzled myself in past Michael's arm. He grabbed me around the waist and lifted me up onto his lap. I smiled and rested my cheek on his warm chest as Michael wrapped his arms around me and went back his drawing. I looked over at the picture it was a girl I don't know who but it was a nice drawing except she had very sad eyes. I sighed feeling content as I lay into my brother's chest as he hummed gently which was something he always did when he was drawing. I felt my eyes drift closed and I just lay listening to the comforting sound of Michaels heart beating under my ear. Suddenly my head snapped up I hadn't heard anything had I? Obviously I had as Michaels hands had tightened around me protectively as I swung my head around I saw my parents had both woken up and were sitting up tense their eyes locked on nothing. As were Matt and Martin, I swung my eyes around I could sense more than see something. Something was wrong.
"Michael?" I whispered wanting pleading my favourite brother to make me feel better.
"Des." He said tensely which made me flinch and turn around to look at him. "You go with Matt and Martin ok honey." I just frowned nor having a clue what he was talking about
"Dad What the hell do we do?" Matt asked urgency in his voice that I wasn't used to. "There's too many of them."
"Michael with me." My daddy said pushing himself up to his feet.
"Michael." I whispered as he wrapped his arms around me and pushed himself up to his feet holding me pressed into his chest I wrapped my limbs around him.
"Boys you take Des and your mother and you go." He hissed urgently "we'll hold them off. You get to the tunnels." even in my childlike state of innocence I knew I didn't like this as I felt Michael press his nose into my hair for a second as he wrapped his arms a little more tightly around me as he pressed a kiss to the top of my head. "Matt." He snapped and picked me off his handing me to my brother I allowed Matt to take me but looked back at Michael who reached out his eyes sad and stroked my cheek.
"No I'm staying with you." My mother snapped.
"No your not." He snarled
"Like hell I'm going to hide in a hole and let them destroy our family." A crash made me fling myself into Matt's chest clinging tightly into his shirt. I saw a shape crash through the window. It instantly straightened up and I flinched as I inhaled the hideous smell. It was thick sweet and so heavy the scent seemed to cling into my throat making me want to gag as I saw the shape straighten up and it became a person. Until he turned to us his eyes lighting up as he opened his mouth wide and hissed at us. I screamed as his bright red eyes blazed and I could see his long sharp bright white fangs, a vampire.
"RUN." Michael screamed as he flung himself at the vampire pushing him back into the wall as my dad and mum suddenly shifted. Matt didn't need telling twice he hefted me into his arms and ran towards the basement Martin following as the whole of our house began to explode with noise as I heard smashing and crashing all around us, the house was exploding around us.
"Martin quickly." Matt called as we reached the basement and Martin began hefting aside the big cupboard which moved aside to reveal the tunnel I shrank back into Matt's arms a little I didn't like the tunnel. "Dessie you need to go okay I'm going to be right behind you okay." He said putting me down and giving me a sharp shove towards the tunnel. I scrambled in and began crawling rapidly up the small tunnel. "What the f**k are you doing Bro. Bro.?" Matt shouted as the tunnel went all dark as the door was forced closed. "Matty." I mumbled, "Keep moving Des okay." He muttered but his voice cracked from the intense emotion. I kept on moving and crawled out of the tunnel into the dark cold night and ignored intense storm which was raging around me. Matty suddenly appeared and gripped my arm, "come on Dessie lets run." He said pulling on my arm.
"Martin?" I said,
"He's helping us get away we have to get you out now come on." And we ran I can still remember everything the biting cold through my thin white cotton nightdress twigs stabbing into my bare feet. We ran my Matty could run a lot faster than me but he wouldn't he kept tugging on my arm as I stumbled in the dark trees. Matt suddenly stumbled to a halt his eyes looking into the trees intently as he forced his breathing to be slow he pushed me behind him just a little and gripped my hand. I saw movement amongst the trees and stared intensely at the darkness. Matt tensed his eyes turning gold as he bared his teeth and growled loudly as a vampire strode into the clearing. I knew enough to know that Matt was too young to be able to shift yet; we were at the mercy of this vampire his intense eyes were a beautiful cornflower blue and then flashed scarlet. As he hissed baring his long sharp white fangs. My eyes locked onto him I should have been horrified I knew that but the simple sight of his fangs made something inside me tingle. his eyes moved from Matt to me and he smiled , I remember putting my head to one side and looked at him I knew I should be scared but I wasn't I honestly was captivated. Matt growled again. The vampire just smiled and before I could blink he took a single step to my brother's side and his hands shot out and grabbed my brother's shoulder hard. I screamed as I saw him bare his fangs which he sank into my brother's neck before he pulled back his firm grip tearing his throat out. I squealed as I sank down to the floor curling myself up into a ball and squealed , it wasn't productive but I wasn't prepared to defend myself I'd never had to I didn't know how to go about it. I whimpered as I felt a hand pressed gently onto my cheek, the skin was ice cold and made me shudder.
"Well hello little girl," a voice purred but it made me shiver and curl up tighter. He chuckled "are you one of them?" he asked "I think you are, hmm a little girl that's special isn't it "he purred as he nuzzled into my hair and groaned at the thought "at least I hope your one of them or I just wasted that snack. But you look edible, just a little bite size."I whimpered as he reached up and slid my hair back from my neck I shivered and reached out in the darkness finding Matt's cold heavy hand sticky with his blood. I gripped it and felt tears welled up as I felt no response from my brothers fingers. That scared me more than anything else my brothers would do anything to protect me. I scrunched my eyes closed as I felt his long sharp fangs being dragged up my neck, I quivered as I suddenly felt the fangs pierce my throat and slide into my skin which hurt but strangely not as much as I expected. It was a strange indescribable feeling as I felt him suck slowly drawing in my blood, I felt my body began to shake, as he drew his teeth back out. "My God." He said in a shaky voice he slowly licked across the neck wounds, "look at me." He purred as I hunched over continuing to hide my face in the ground as my fingers gripped my dead brother's hands. His hands gripped my face and holding my face surprisingly strongly he forced me to turn and look at him. I pressed my eyes closed "look at me. Look at me." He snarled his voice a pure command, and I couldn't help it my eyes flickered open and I looked at him my vision being swamped by the view of his scarlet eyes. "What the f**k are you?" He whispered running his fingers down my cheeks. I couldn't do any more but just gape at him I was too scared I couldn't do anything else he was a vampire I was taught to fear them and I had seen him rip the throat out of my beloved brother, that was another thing that made me completely unable to respond as I became shockingly aware of the sound of blood pounding in my ears. I heard the pounding of feet around us as I turned and saw one two three four more vampires circling us. The vampire holding my face stood up facing his fellows, I felt my heart freeze as if in pure terror, but he simply turned his back on me and I heard the smile in his voice,
"Well brothers I think I have found myself a new toy." Blood, darkness, smells sweet sickly smells, pain, cold and screaming, screaming. I scream in pure terror of that sight of insistent red eyes. I screamed louder and curled myself up. What's the earliest thing you can remember? That was the earliest thing I could remember with such a shocking clarity it was as if in that moment on that rug my memory decided to swing into effect with the clarity of a film. Apparently we can't form enduring memories until were like four or something. I guess most people must have like fuzzy memories about half events but my first memory is vivid as hell maybe because I've spent so much time wallowing in it. So many hours shut up in my gilded cage dwelling on that memory, when all I really wished was that I could forget it.
