Five Evelyn It was still dark when I woke up with a start, heart pounding. I blinked to regain my bearings, disoriented from being ripped out of the deepest sleep I’d managed in a long time. A low whimper from my side pulled my attention. “Marcus?” I whispered, squinting into the darkness in an attempt to see his face. Another whimper, louder this time, made me fumble for the light on the nightstand next to me. Just as the soft light bloomed in Marcus’ bedroom, another pained moan sounded from the bed. I turned and found the large man curled into a fetal position, clutching the sheets in both hands.
