Chapter Fourteen
Angela awoke with a raging thirst. Warily, she scanned the room. One wall was concrete block with a high window set in it. Heavy wire mesh covered the glass. Cobweb garlands were hanging from the mesh. The glass had been painted over, but the paint had chipped in places and the bright sunlight breaking through was like lucent eyes. The other walls were wood planking halfway up with wire mesh above. Angela could only assume that the door was barred from without. Above, heavy hand hewn beams supported rough planks.
She was lying on a bare mattress with her hands cuffed in front of her. Across the room, a girl was sleeping on another mattress. She was naked except for a shackle that had been chained to her ankle. There was a bucket beside the door.
