CHAPTER ONE
My name is Sierra Erylis and I'm the alpha of the Raedwulf Pack. The first thing you automatically assume when you hear alpha is, it's definitely a man. I enjoyed the look on men's faces, from rival packs, whenever they lost a duel. A smile came to my face automatically, relishing the countless wins I'd amassed over the years. I was proud of myself for rising above it all. I found myself getting submerged with memories.
Blood. Sweat. Tears
Five years ago
I had to admit, life was good. My father, Hamil Erylis, was the alpha of the Silver Moon pack. My mother, Constance Erylis, was the Luna. We prided ourselves on being one of the most peaceful packs. We often had to fight off intruders, but our pack had fighters and guards that were well trained.
"Whatcha doing?" Hyde, my big brother, asked as he playfully pushed my head.
"Leave me alone you big goof. I'm trying to read!" I told him as I waved the book in his face.
"i see that. Come" he said as he pulled me from my seat amidst my protests.
"Where are you taking me?" I tried digging my heels into the ground, but he was much stronger than me. He just continued pulling me effortlessly.
"You're almost of age now. You might find your mate soon."
A rush of excitement filled me, tinged with a bit of fear. Leaving my family, finding out he belonged to a rival pack or a cruel pack. A shudder passed through me. Hyde must have felt me tense up. He suddenly stood, causing me to crash into him.
"Ow!" I exclaimed as I rubbed my nose, giving him a dirty look.
"Hey, look, I know you're scared, but meeting your mate is going to be great! Honestly.
"How would you know? You don't even have a mate." Normally that would faze him, but today he just smiled.
"I will. Soon, I can feel it. Dad is organizing something. Alpha whose children are of age and haven't found their mates will be coming over. Last time it happened in the Brodcliff pack, this time it's here. You might get yours too!" he added with a wink,"Anyway, that's beside the point." he resumed walking and pulling me to keep up with his pace.
"You need to start training seriously now. The little basics you know will be of little help to you. Especially with that tiny wolf of yours." the hairs on my neck bristled. He knew this was a sensitive topic for me.
"Jerk. I'm an average-sized wolf." I muttered under my breath, sulking a bit. He just laughed. For the daughter of an alpha though, my wolf was quite small. I was a little brown wolf who stood no chance in a real battle. My only redeeming quality was that I was fast. I could use it to flee. Maybe it was a survival skill that accompanied my size.
"No, you're not. And with that, we're here." we'd already reached the training grounds, which was ever busy. The others immediately noticed our presence, though I'm sure they noticed my brother's and not mine, and bowed respectfully, some throwing in greetings, then continued with their training.
" Your skillset basically includes defense, right?"
I nodded grudgingly. I didn't want to be here. "I'm not even ready to train."
"Rule number one. Always be ready. Always be prepared. Remember, you're always a target." He looked at me straight in my eyes. All the humor gone. It was very rare to see my brother so serious. "Now stop complaining and let's begin." He said using his alpha voice on me. I fisted my hands and gritted my teeth. I hated that I was this weak. I hated that he had so much power over him. I bowed my head and forced out between my teeth. "Yes, Hyde."
"Today we'll be focusing on offense."
He stood feet apart and fists raised. Unsure of what to do, I copied his stance. He cracked a smile.
"Don't copy me. Come at me with your best attack." I looked at him puzzled. He knew very well I didn't fight. The best I could do was probably nails and a weak punch. I glanced at him again. He looked dead serious. I might as well put my all in it. I relaxed my shoulders, shaking my hands, preparing myself for a tackle. I did a slight jog on the spot, then charged shouting a little battle cry I'd made up and launched myself at him with my full weight. He didn't even budge.
This asshole. I could feel reverberations in his body. Was he laughing at me? Acting on pure instinct and fury, I sunk my teeth into his abdomen until I tasted blood. He shouted in anguish and pulled me out roughly. I came out with a chunk of his meat in my mouth. I spat it in his face and looked him straight in his eyes. He had a look of disbelief in his eyes as he looked at me.
"You have a few tricks up your sleeve, I see. How did you learn to do that?" He asked as he gingerly put me down and looked at the damage I'd caused. It had already started healing, albeit a little slower than it would usually take, but I'd done an impressive bit of damage on the future alpha. I smiled in spite of myself.
"Do what?" I asked absent-mindedly, still in my high of having caused some damage to Hyde.
"You just drew out your fangs without fully transforming?"
"I don't know. I guess the perks of being a little wolf." I said, puffing out my chest. He looked at me deep in thought. He must have been speaking to someone through the link.
"Let's call it a day." He suddenly said and walked away, leaving me in the middle of the training grounds with people staring. I looked at his abdomen and saw it hadn't fully healed yet. Weird.
"Sierra, come to my dressing room immediately." My mother summoned me through the link.
"Coming mom." I replied, heading for home.
What had happened though? Had my fangs really emerged? I ran my tongue over my teeth to feel whether they were still drawn. They weren't. I didn't really feel any different when attacking Hyde. But in that state I was... I bumped into our beta's son, Seth. Color immediately flooded my cheeks. Calm down. I could feel my heart rate speeding up steadily but I was trying to steady it by taking long breathes. I've always had a little crush on Seth. Deep down, I always hoped he'd turn out to be my mate. I was almost 18. We will find out. Please Moon Goddess. I sent a short prayer to the heavens.
"Penny for your thoughts?" He asked me, smiling down at me, his left cheek dimple showing. I swear I could look at him all day. I held out my hand expectantly. He tilted his head, raising his eyebrows inquisitively.
"The penny." He chuckled lightly, the sound washing through me. I think I have found my mate. I thought dreamily.
He dug through his pocket and drew out a silver coin.
"Will this do?" he asked me, holding it up.
"Perfectly." I muttered, satisfied, taking the coin from his hand and slipping it into my pocket. "I've always had a crush on you and I hope you're my mate-"
"Sierra!" My mum's voice rung through the link.
I was feeling a bit too shy to face him directly, "Okay bye. My mum has summoned." I didn't even let him respond. I rushed out of there still not believing I'd just done that. When did I grow these massive balls? I put my face in my hands and muffled a scream.
"Sierra." My heart skipped a bit. Seth? He'd never contacted me before. No, I wasn't ready. I shut off the link.
Imagine the shame if he didn't feel the same, or worse if he viewed me as his little sister! I would not be able to handle it. But I couldn't escape this forever. We were bound to run into each other sooner or later.
"Took you long enough," my mum's voice drifted down the hall directed to me.
"Sorry mum, I bumped into Seth. And I was training with Hyde beforehand."
"Mmmhhhmmm." she pushed some dresses into my hand. "Try this on, Hyde told you about the ceremony dad is preparing, right?" I nodded. "You'll also be turning of age over the weekend so you might get your mate." she looked at me, the excitement floating in her eyes. The excitement was mutual. We both squealed simultaneously.
"You have to look your best. Though even if you were in rags the bond would do it for you, but! Dress up."
"That goes without saying, mama."
"That's my girl. Now go try them on and tell me the one you'll like the most."
