Celeste’s POV
I’m going to be face to face with that cold blooded killer? Is this safe?
“Is this really necessary? I mean surely he must be a busy man. I wouldn’t want to inconvenience him for such a small matter.” I say.
“He requested to meet you and hear your request in person. Only you.” Myles says looking over at Clara.
“No Myles! Absolutely not. I’m not going to send her in there alone.” Clara says putting her hand across Myles’ chest.
“Clara, I don’t think you understand the position you are in. I don’t want you to go in there and get involved with that guy.” Myles says to her.
But he’s perfectly fine sending me in there? Clara takes a step in front of me, putting herself between me and Myles.
“I’m not sending her in there alone Myles.” She says standing firm. Myles thinks for moment, then resigns to defeat.
“Ugh, fine! But you’re going to stand in the back with me, and DON’T you say a word, do you hear me?” Myles says. Clara nods.
“Come on then.”
Myles leads us up a set of stairs and down a narrow hall with a single door standing ominously at the end. We walk there in complete silence. Myles knocks three times with a distinctive rhythm, then he waits a few moments before opening the door, revealing a dark room with a single desk and a man sitting behind it, cloaked in shadow. The only light in the room is coming from the moon in the window behind the man, a single candle in the corner, and the faint glow of the man’s demonish red eyes.
My gaze is fixed on his scarlett irises. Seeing the red eyes in person recalls something I read in a book at Luna school. The book was titled ‘The Great Packs of an Aged Past’, and it mentioned that there was a powerful Alpha bloodline with red eyes. The pack they were in was supposed to be huge, but I cant remember what the pack was called.
“Come in.” The man says. I walk towards the desk and stand in-front of him. He leans forward, allowing me to see his face for the first time. My only thought, is that he’s a lot younger than I thought he’d be. How old is he? He can’t be more than a few years older than me.
“Now, tell me what small poor informant pack can do for the future Luna of Mystic Mountain Pack.” The man behind the desk says. He knows who I am? My pack is pretty big, but I didn’t realize I could be so easily recognized.
“What?” I hear Myles behind me ask. I guess he didn’t know who I was. I pull back my hood and reveal my face completely.
“You seem to know who I am, but I can’t say the same.” I reply.
“Who I am isn’t important. Tell me what you want to know and I’ll see if I can help you.” He says.
“I want information on Annabelle Spring. She’s from Twin Lake Pack. I also want to know about the maid she has in employment. Connie is her name.” I say. The man behind the desk starts laughing. What is so funny that he’s laughing about.
“What a small and strange world we live in.” He says. What does he mean? Wait, could she have done the same thing?
“Did she approach you for information about me?” I ask quickly. What could they possibly have on me? The man leans back in his chair.
“You have a higher rank than her, honor would compel me to take your side. But I have to admit, we responded better to money than honor here.” The man says studying my expression. I feel like I want to hide myself. His red eyes seem to see so much more of me than I want them to.
I reach into my pocket and pull out my pouch of money. I hold it high and drop it on the desk, allowing the heavy thud of the falling pouch to speak for itself.
But he doesn’t even budge, so I pull out the jewels I brought just incase this wasn’t enough, and place them on the desk too. He looks at the jewels then smirks at me before leaning back in his chair and propping his feet up.
“She may have come here asking for information on you, your pack, and...your fiancé.” He finally says.
“Can you show me what you have on her?” I ask. He sits up and holds his hand out to the side, and just holds it there. I look back at Myles confused, but then I hear the sound of approaching footsteps coming down the hall. The door swings open and then a man walks in carrying a folder. He walks across the room saying nothing, and places the folder in the waiting hand of the red eyed man.
I want to roll my eyes and the obnoxious display of authority, but I still need this man’s help. So instead I look down to hide my expression. He opens the folder and flips through a few pages before slamming it shut and sliding it across the desk to me. I flip it open and study the contents. The first thing I see is my picture, then there’s some basic information about me, my pack name, my lineage. Under ‘family’ it says ‘unloved, and uncared for’ I know it’s true, but it hurts to see it written down. I close the folder and slide it back to him.
“You aren’t curious about what we have on your fiancé?” He probes. There’s no point since he won’t be staying my fiancé for very long, and I have no interest in that right now.
“Not particularly.” I say.
“Why is that?” He asks.
“You’ll have to figure that out for yourself. I’m not just going to give you information for free.” I reply.
I see a hint of a smile on the man’s face, but he doesn’t respond.
“So will you complete my request?” I ask him.
“Yes, I’ll complete your request. I’ll send you a letter once it’s complete, it should take about two weeks.” He says. That’s good enough for me.
“Can I ask why you want this information? You told Myles it was a matter of life and death. Who’s death?” He asks.
“Mine.” I answer. He chuckles again, unaware that I’m being completely truthful.
“Very well, I guess that will have to satiate my curiosity for now. You will hear from me soon.” He says. I flip my hood back up and follow Myles and Clara out of the room.
The Red Eyed Man’s POV
“Shadow are you there?” I call out after the door closes. Shadow comes forward from the corner.
“Yes sir.” He replies.
“Keep an eye on her, and then send someone to Twin Lake Pack to investigate her request.” I say.
“Yes sir.” Shadow replies. I see him hesitate to say something else. “What?” I ask him.
“Oh nothing sir.. I was just curious as to why you personally took her request?” Shadow asks me.
“Huh, I’m not sure. But you have to admit it’s intriguing that they both are investigating each other. Something interesting is definitely going to happen here..” I reply.
“But sir, don’t you hate Mystic Mountain Pack. It seems like you’re.. helping them.”
“Does it seem that way? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.”
Celeste’s POV
After our meeting with the informant pack, Clara and I head back to the castle.
“Do you think anyone noticed we left?” I ask her in a whisper.
“I doubt it miss. It’s pretty late and-“
“Celeste?” I hear a familiar voice say. I turn my head instinctively and see Will walking towards me. I freeze in place. Flashes of him pulling out his sword as I lay my head across the cold wood cut through my mind. I swallow hard, but it doesn’t help the lump in my throat. Will walks over to me and Clara. It’s dark out and the moon is the only thing lighting the path.
“What are you doing out here so late?” He asks me. Seeing his face for the first time since coming back makes me feel sick to my stomach. I want to tell him off, maybe even slap him, but how would I explain myself?
As of right now he hasn’t done anything wrong. He’s never even met Annabelle let alone fallen for her. In fact, he probably still has feelings for me. I look up at his young face. He’s quite handsome, always has been. I remember a time when a single look from him would have made me go weak at the knees. But now that’s all blocked by a single image. The face he gave me when I was crying and pleading with him to spare my life. A face full of hate and disdain, a face of betrayal is all I can see now. I’m so angry my body is shaking. I clench my fists and force myself to reply.
“I came out here for a walk. I felt better and wanted some fresh air, since I’ve been cooped up in my room all day.” I say. I hope I sounded normal. I’m going to break off my engagement with him soon, but now is not the time. I want to bring him down. I want to be the one to shove his face in the dirt. And to do that, I need to stay close to him. He walks closer to me.
“Oh, you’re feeling better?” His eyes look at me with care and compassion. How could it have changed so drastically in just three years? How could he change his feelings for me so quickly?
“I am. But the doctor says I’m still contagious.” I take a step back from him. “Don’t want you to get sick.” I add.
“It feels like you have been avoiding me.” Will says.
“I’m not!” I say quickly. “Don’t worry. I’ll be fine soon.” I place my hand on his cheek and pat it gently to reassure him. But I don’t meet his gaze, I just can’t, not yet.
“Well you better hurry back inside before your father finds you gone.” He says.
“Yes, of course. We’ll be going.” I rush past him and Clara and I head inside. Right now, I still need to play the part of Will’s fiancé and my father’s daughter. Until Annabelle gets here, this will be my plan. The higher they climb, the farther they will fall. If I change too much before Annabelle gets here, I won’t be able to predict what she’ll do. I just need to keep this act up for a month. I can do this.
