7 An Invitation

Rena's heartfelt as if she had lost her support from the first day her parents were killed. Now that she is alone in New York, her happy life in the past is like a dream, and all she is left with is bewilderment.   The uncertainty of Rena's brother's death intensifies this sadness.   Principal Alfred's house is very comfortable as it is surrounded by quietness and few people pass by even during the day. However, although Rena lived in the house, she could not settle down.   Christmas was approaching. It is the most festive time of the year for a reunion. However, all this has nothing to do with Rena.   On Rena's third day in the house, there were only two days left before Christmas. At nine o'clock in the morning, Gerard arrived.   "I'm sorry for not caring much about you these days and leaving you alone. There are a lot of things to take care of in school during the Christmas days. If you have any difficulties, please feel free to contact me by phone."   Gerard took out a business card and handed it to Rena.   Rena took it with both hands, and she smiled. "Thank you so much. It was my presence that originally caused you the trouble. Please feel free to work on your business, everything is fine with me here. It's peaceful here."   Rena gives Gerard a sweet smile.   Gerard was dazed when he saw Rena's smile, which was reminiscent of the sunshine after a snowstorm, and he didn't know why, but he felt a little out of his mind for a moment. However, he quickly adjusted his mood. He smiled at Rena, said goodbye, and left.   About an hour later, just after ten o'clock, Rena received a phone call from Gerard.   "Miss Rena, I want to confirm something with you, do you know Officer Wilson or any of his family?"   Rena's heart skipped a beat. "I have not met anyone from the Wilson family. However, my father and Officer Wilson were classmates."   Rena deliberately did not say anything about her engagement to Officer Wilson's son.   Gerard's tone suddenly became lighter. "So that's how it is, I was just at school and met the Wilson's daughter, the lady named Leyla. Leyla's mother, Neveah, who is the matriarch of the Wilson family, has returned from abroad. They wanted to see you so much that they asked me to take you to her house for Christmas. I'll bring Leyla over to you if you wish."   Neveah and Leyla are Carlos' mother and sister. If Rena meets them, does that mean she will soon meet her fiance?   Thinking about what had happened outside the airport that day, Rena was afraid to meet Carlos.   However, was there any reason for her to refuse? She was now just a poor woman who had lost her family and needed protection. What right did she have to refuse the Wilson family's invitation? Besides, Leyla didn't mention the contract marriage either.   Maybe they weren't happy with the contract marriage either, Rena kept reassuring herself.    "Okay. Thank you." Rena finally agreed.   After she hung up the phone, Rena sighed. The unexpected meeting with Carlos the other day had made her resist seeing anyone from the Wilson family. However, she knew she couldn't avoid the dilemma. Now, as if God had decided for her, the Wilson family had come to invite her.   So Rena decided to face it.   An hour later, Rena stood in front of the door and met Leyla, who got out of her car.   Leyla had red lips and curly hair, an elegant CHANEL suit, and an exquisite Hermes Kelly bag hanging on her arm. She was dressed as a celebrity and looked very professional without losing her feminine charm. She also acted extremely elegantly, without any behavior that felt restrained. As soon as she got out of the car, she took a moment to look at Rena, then she smiled and came forward, shook Rena's hand affectionately.   "I'm Leyla. Finally we met. You know what? I've been wanting to meet you since the day I heard you were in New York."   Leyla turned to Gerard again and said, "It's all because of you that I can meet Rena. I didn't expect you found such a beautiful woman once she came to New York."   Gerard's heart skipped a beat when he heard these words.   Rena said, "Leyla, I'm really sorry. I should be the one to visit you and your mother. Now you are the one who came here to see me, and I am flattered."   "Dear Rena, since you are here in New York, we, the Wilson family, have the responsibility to take care of you. If you have no other plans, how about coming to my house to spend Christmas together?"   Although Rena was tempted to refuse, she could only agree. "Okay."   "Wonderful. I'm going home right away to tell my mom the good news. Please get ready and I'll send a driver to pick you up in the evening."   "Okay."   Leyla left happily, and Gerard walked Rena into the house.   "Miss Rena, there is something I forgot to ask you, is the author of this book your father?" Gerard took out an old book from his bag.   Rena glanced at it and found a book on cryptography that her father had completed in college. Fortunately, her father's mentor Alfred, who appreciated the book, paid to help him publish it. Later, the book became the FBI's internal textbook; to keep the book confidential, it stopped commercial publication. Now anyone can't see this book in stores anymore. Rena didn't expect Gerard to have this book.   Gerard smiled. "Here's the thing, although President Alfred retired, he still likes to study mathematics and cryptography. Sometimes he would take me with him to do research, and this is the book he gave me. I always liked this book, and I appreciated the author's mind. I never thought that this author would be your father."   Rena picked up the old book and looked at the yellowing title page of the author's preface, which she was familiar with. A faint feeling of sadness welled up in her heart. "This book was my father's devotion. You may not know that he later revised another edition, adding knowledge of computer cryptography. However, the new one is not generally published and distributed, and is only read within the FBI. I can lend you the latest edition if you want."   Gerard looked at Rena. "Yes, thank you very much. This will be a great help to my research."   Rena smiled, "Thank you for enjoying the book."   The sun shone brightly on Rena's face through the window's glass in the late winter afternoon. Her neck was white as jade, and her eyes were like two clear springs.   Gerard looked into Rena's eyes and felt as if he had fallen into some clear spring. There are many kinds of women in this world. Gerard does not like the vibrant red roses; he only loves the elegant chrysanthemum that emits a light fragrance.   "Gerard?" Rena's puzzled voice rang out.   Gerard came back to his senses in a slight hurry and said with a smile, "Sorry, I just got lost in thought. "   "That's okay."   Gerard hesitated for a moment as he walked over to Rena. "I don't know if it's appropriate for me to ask this now. Just now you seemed resistant to going to the Wilson's for Christmas, didn't you? If you don't mind, could you tell me why?"   Rena looked up into Gerard's eyes. "Is Carlos Wilson your cousin?"   "Yes. Does this matter have anything to do with him?"   "I'm his fiancee."   "What?" Gerard's eyes widened in surprise. He knew Carlos very well, and he had never heard of Carlos having any fiancee.   "It's hard for me to explain. It was a wrong contract marriage. I didn't really want to accept it."   Gerard felt that God was playing a joke on him. He couldn't imagine Carlos and Rena got married at all. The two of them were people from two worlds.   "So ...... what are you going to do?" Gerard felt his voice tremble a little.   "To be honest, I don't know." Rena lowered her head. Sadness spread across her face.   "If you need my help, please do let me know. If you need to dissolve your contractual marriage with Carlos, I'll do my best to help you."   Rena looked at Gerard in surprise.   Gerard was also surprised by his own words. This matter had nothing to do with him, but he didn't want to see Rena being sad. He thought that such a wonderful girl deserved someone better.   Gerard had an answer in his mind, but he didn't dare to think about it.   No matter what, he wanted Rena to be happy. And Carlos, that guy, would only bring tears to Rena.   Rena said, "Things can't get any worse, so there's no need to worry about me."   Gerard wanted to say something else, but he was speechless. He could only watch as Rena packed her bags and was picked up by Wilson's driver.
