Chapter One
My life is a living hell. I am the most depressed person in the whole world. I have been the subject of ridicule, harassment, and emotional and physical torture. Yesterday, I was sitting alone on the stairs when Kylan, the Beta's son, called me a b***h and poured a cup of coffee on my head. I am a slave in a free world. I do menial jobs like cleaning and washing. Sometimes I do the worst of it all, like cleaning the dungeon. Today, while I was cleaning the dungeons, the guards locked me with two inmates on the account that they were going to have their lunch. While I was sweeping the place, which, by the way, is the job of the guards, the two inmates started to make passes at me. One of them even attempted to bare my breast. I was almost raped by the inmates. While other inmates just laughed and watched, I fought back with tears in my eyes. The guards that locked me in the cell came just in time, which made the inmates stop their advances. I left the dungeon crying. Some pack members saw me on the way and laughed at me. All this is happening to me because I am an orphan. My father was the Beta of the pack, but the cold hand of death took my parents away some years ago. I am left with no protector. I am weak, and I have no wolf. I still don't know why, but this made me an easy target to prey on by everyone. Lost in my thoughts in the corners of my room, I heard a soft knock on my door. "Zina, are you inside? The preparations are about to start. You should join us now. You don't want any problems with Luna," the chief maid said as she entered my room. "Thanks, ma'am. Sorry for making you come all the way to call me," I apologized. I joined the maids in the hall to set up the decorations. "After I was done in the hall, I joined the other maids in the kitchen to prepare the sumptuous meal that would be served to the guests tomorrow. Tomorrow is the Alpha's son's birthday. He is turning eighteen, and he will be announced as the next Alpha. He will shift into his wolf form to make sure the whole pack sees that he has a wolf and the type of wolf he has. Coincidentally, tomorrow is also my eighteenth birthday. But nobody cares. I don't have a wolf to show for it; kids less than my age have their wolf. I wish my parents were still alive. Maybe I might be able to find my wolf with their help. I didn't sleep until the party started. I didn't have any fancy dress to wear to the party, so I had to choose the best of the rags I had. As I got to the party, the whole hall was buzzing with people chatting and having a good time. The Alpha climbed on the stage, and everybody stopped what they were doing to listen to him. "I want to welcome you all to the transformation of a young boy into a man. Today is my boy's birthday, and he will proceed to show the kind of wolf he is made of," Alpha Von said, beaming with a wide grin. In less than a minute, a big majestic wolf, with large paws, a black with a tint of grey was lowered by a makeshift elevator to the podium. You'd know instantly that it is a wolf capable of leading the pack as he howled. Its howling shook the whole building. The Luna couldn't contain her happiness as her face went pale. The whole pack gave an ovation as he was raised back up. "Let the merry and party continue, there is enough to eat and drink," Alpha Von said as he left the podium. "Hi, mate. Your wolf was majestic and lit," I said. "What do you mean by mate? You spineless, weak, and wolfless girl wants to be mate with the future Alpha of the pack," Hunter said. "But I am your mate. We were fated together by the moon goddess, today is my birthday by the way," I said. "I can't be your mate. I am sorry, I cannot let the whole pack down, by mating a wolfless Luna," Hunter replied. "I, Hunter Von, the future Alpha of Moonland, reject you, Zina, a member of the Moonland pack, as my mate and I command you to accept the rejection." Stammering, I replied, "I, Zina, a member of the Moonland pack, accept the rejection of Hunter Von, the future Alpha of the Moonland pack." Like I swallowed a hot charcoal, I can't put a stop to the pain I felt in my chest. Tears gushed from my eyes. I can't describe the rejection and shame I am feeling right now. I decided my time in the pack was over. I resolved to leave the pack and never return. I went to meet the chief maid who seemed to be the only one who cared about what happened to me. She tried to convince me to stay and endure a little longer. "Zina dear, you don't know what is outside the pack. You have never been outside the pack before. What if you are attacked? What would you eat? It is better to stay here; at least you have a place to sleep and something to eat. Please don't be in a haste to leave," the chief maid said. As I left the pack, I started to see that my decision was not the best, but I couldn't go back to face the shame and persecution. After walking for about two hours, to where my instincts lead, I began to feel tired and weak. I decided to eat a little out of the food I brought for my journey. As I was eating, a group of rogues attacked me from nowhere. I tried to run away from them, but I was quickly surrounded, pointing their knives and swords at me. I couldn't ward them off. I raised my hands as a sign of surrender and closed my eyes, waiting to be struck to death. Suddenly I heard a deep, loud voice. "Leave the girl alone," the voice said. Slowly opening my eyes, I saw a tall, handsome young man with a graceful and majestic aura, fighting the rogues. As he fought them, I thought this must be an angel sent by my dead parents. As I was about to take a better look at him, one of the rogues shot a tiny arrow at my shoulder. As I removed the arrow, I felt dizzy and passed out.
