Amelia didn’t wait for him to answer, she just dropped the bracelet into my out stretched hand, and walked away calling Stephen's name.
I looked up at Jasper nervously and half smiled as he just stared at me.
Shyly, I looked down at the bracelet, and tried to open it using my none broken arm. After a few seconds, Jasper sighed, and walked over to me, a rush of butterflies erupted in my stomach at his closeness.
''Here,'' He said, holding out his hand. ''Let me.''
I looked up and handed him the bracelet without speaking as I tried to ignore my nerves.
He placed his fingers onto two small round symbols on either side of the bracelet, there was a clicking sound as it opened.
I reached out for it, but he shook his head at me and repeated. ''Let me.''
I held up my good arm shakily, and he placed the bracelet very gently around my wrist, clicking it closed, before running his fingers down my skin along my vein. Was he thinking about drinking my blood?
''Thank you.'' I whispered, looking into his eyes, his face was emotionless. I didn’t get it.
''You don’t have to show me around if you don’t want to.'' I told him, ''I’m sure I’ll be okay, I’m not planning on going anywhere anyway.''
He looked directly at me then, with a pained expression on his face. ''Are you afraid to be alone with me?''
''No,'' I spurted out, ''Why would I be?''
He didn’t answer my question, but he looked pleased. ''Why don’t you want me to show you around then?'' He asked.
''I just thought, because you didn’t seem pleased about the idea, that you should know that you don’t have to show me.'' I said quickly, though he seemed to keep up. ''I don’t want to be a burden on anyone, you’ve all done so much for me already, and now you’re letting me stay here. I don’t want to put any of you out even more than I am.'' I looked down, blushing again.
''You’re not a burden.'' He said softly, he touched my face, and I felt my stomach tighten in joy. ''I’m glad to help.''
I glanced up at his face, he seemed sincere, he smiled at me and offered his hand, I took it without so much as a thought, and the butterflies inside my body went into a crazed frenzy as his hand wrapped around mine as he helped me off the log.
The moment I was up, he let me go, and looked down at my bare feet.
''You should put on the shoes we gave you.'' He said, frowning slightly. ''It’s a long walk.''
''That’s okay.'' I said, smiling down at my feet, ''I don’t like to wear anything on my feet.''
Jasper started laughing, and I frowned at him.
''What?'' I demanded. The butterflies vanished.
''It’s nothing.'' He said, sobering up as he noticed my face. ''It’s just funny that you can’t remember who you are, or where you come from, but you can remember that you don’t like wearing shoes.''
''Yes, funny.'' I said sarcastically, as he started laughing again.
''I didn’t mean it like that.'' He stopped laughing again, his face looked troubled.
We were quiet for a second and all I could only hear was my breathing.
''You don’t breathe.'' I stated, and stared at him as he smiled.
''Not for the last two hundred years.'' He said casually, ''We should go.''
He gestured towards the trees before he stared in that direction.
I followed him quietly, thinking over everything that had happened that morning and examining my bracelet.
''How will this protect me?'' I asked curiously once we were hidden in the trees. A mischievous look crossed his face, he froze, and I turned to look at him.
He snarled, the sound chilled me, I noticed his eyes turn black, and he sprang at me. As I fell backwards in shock, I saw his teeth turn sharp as he lunged for my throat.
I screamed and fell onto the ground as a great yellow light sprang forth from the bracelet around my wrist. It hit Jasper in the stomach, and launched him back about twenty feet into a large tree before he too fell to the ground. There was a loud cracking sound and the tree fell over.
I was frozen on the ground, breathing deeply as my heart tried to jump out of my chest.
Jasper picked himself up quickly, a great big smile covered his face as he walked back over to me, suddenly he stopped and shook his head.
''It’s okay, Tobby.'' He said as though Tobias was standing there with us. ''I was just showing her how the bracelet worked.''
''You could have just told me.'' I screamed angrily at him as I clumsily got off the ground and started padding the dirt off of my dress and legs.
''I’m sorry.'' He said unconvincingly with a large smile still on his face, he reached out his hand and dusted some dirt off my shoulder.
''Don’t touch me!'' I shouted at him, shrugging away from his hand furiously.
He let his arm drop to his side, the smile on his face vanished as he looked at me.
''I really am sorry I scarred you.'' He said sincerely this time, ''I shouldn’t have done that, I won't do it again, I swear.'' He added when I still ignored him.
We were quiet again as I removed more dirt. He moved closer to me and gently placed his hands on my shoulders like he’d done earlier. I wanted to move away from his embrace, but the pain in his eyes stopped me, he really looked upset that he’d scared me.
''Please don’t be frightened of me.'' He looked into my eyes as he spoke, ''I never meant anything by it. I thought you’d laugh, please forgive me.''
''It's okay.'' I said, unable to look away from his eyes, ''I forgive you, let’s go.'' I added, walking away from him.
''What is wrong with me?'' I shouted at myself, ''The guy just attacked me for fun, and I still get all nervous and goo goo eyed at him when he touches me, I must be mental. I only just met him.''
I could hear him close behind me as we walked, and I felt nervous again by his closeness. I shook my head to clear it.
''You don’t like him.'' I told myself, ''He's a vampire for crying out loud.''
''So,'' He said after a minute, ''You really don’t remember anything?''
I slowed down so I could look at him while I spoke. ''No,'' I answered more casually than I felt.
''I keep getting flashes.'' I admitted, ''Small things, like I remember a golden room, and a doorway made of black liquid and I remember.'' I stopped speaking and clutched my head that had started burning.
''Yes,'' He encouraged.
''I remember a lot of pain.'' I stopped trying to remember, and the pain in my head vanished as it had before.
I didn’t know why I was telling him this, the others had asked me earlier, but for some reason I had kept it to myself, but I suddenly found myself waiting to tell him everything.
''And small things,'' I went on, ''Like I remember my name, and I know I’m in a forest, and that these are trees.'' I said, touching one as we passed, ''And that those are rocks, and stuff like that, but everything else is gone, and every time I try and remember something my head hurts so badly I stop trying to remember. I just wish I Kew. I don’t like it. I feel like it's not safe for me not knowing, but I don’t know why I feel that way.''
I looked directly ahead now to avoid his stare.
''What about you?'' I asked, partly trying to change the subject and partly because I was extremely curious about him.
''What about me?'' He asked, still looking at me.
''Well I mean, how come you all live together in the woods?'' I asked, ''Is it normal for witches, vampires and werewolves to all live together?''
''No,'' He answered, a small smile appeared on his face. ''It’s not normal, in fact, our little pack or family, or what ever you want to call it, is one of a king, but I guess none of us are normal, so it works for us.''
''Why are you all together then, if it's not usually done?''
He looked panicked at my question and changed the subject again.
