YOU ARE NOT WEAK

Mariam’s P.O.V. I wanted to cry for my loss. All these days, I thought that it was darkness around that was making me unable to see anything. When he told me that it was me who had lost my eye-sight, I couldn’t tell how my heart broke into so many pieces. They weren’t able to kill me but made me blind. I didn’t cry because I didn’t want my saviour to say how broken I was right now. I asked him whether I have any chance to get my eyes back or not. The way he said that I still have my chance I believed him. He had no obligation towards me to lie. He kissed my eyes and I felt my eyes alive again. He was an introvert or that was what I felt about his personality. As soon as I got my voice back, I never missed a chance to talk with him about everything that comes into my mind at that time. He was a good listener though. He never replied frequently but notified me in every while that he was listening to me by humming or saying a word or a few in reply. Most of the time, I talked about my work. I told him about my passion for my work. I told him how dangerous it could be sometimes. Now, I felt that every hope of mine of taking the camera in my hand was snatched from me. To be honest, I cried after he went out of the room. As I said earlier, my other senses were now working better than before. So, I always knew when he came inside the room and when he went out. So, I cried my eyes out at my helplessness. What I was going to do without my eyesight. They wanted to kill me instead they killed all my dreams and my willingness to survive. I didn’t want to stay alive blind. I would be a burden on my mom that I didn’t want to be. What I was going to do if I didn’t get my eyesight back. I would be completely healed in a few more days. Then what I was going to do? There was no chance that my saviour would keep me here for long. He will ask me to go back to my home once I am fully healed. It was a surprise that he didn’t ask me anything about my family or my home. He never asked me anything about that attack on me. “Mariam”, I heard his voice and opened my eyes. I didn’t know what day it was and for how many days I was here. I decided to ask him today. “You came”, I whispered and then tried to sit up. I felt his hand wounded around my shoulder from behind and then he pulled me up. I felt the movement in the bed. It meant that he had adjusted the bed according to my position. I was so used to his care that I was scared now. What I was going to do when I would go back. I wanted to take my revenge on them. How on earth it would be possible for me in this blind condition? “What are you thinking so hard? Tell me”, he almost demanded in his cold but soft voice. I didn’t answer as I felt tears building up in my eyes. “In the past two days, you have lost your appetite. Is it because of what I told you about your eye-sight?” he asked me again after a while and this time, I felt the hot liquid passing down on my cheeks. In the next second, I was in his warm embrace. I wrapped my hands around him and cried this time. I had no one here but him. I was weak and I was not ashamed of being weak. Mom said that it’s okay showing your weakness sometimes. We are not perfect in every way. “What I am going to do now?” I asked him in a low tone while hiding my face in his chest. “I told you that you will be okay… don’t you trust me?” he asked me in a gentle but cold tone this time. He had tightened his grip around me. “I…. I trust you… b…but.. I don’t trust .. my fate”, I answered him truthfully. Fate played a cruel game with me and I was here with darkness around me now. “Trust me then only”, he said in a cold tone again. I didn’t know but I always felt safe in his presence. He had become my safe zone since the day I had registered his presence around me. “I have a proposition for you”, he said after my cries converted into faint sobs. We were still in the same position. He was still holding me in his embrace. “I know what happened with you and who did that to you”, I stiffened at his words but he just tightened his grip around me and then lightly played with my hair at the back. “They deserve to be revenged, Mariam…. And I want to help you”, he said and I just nodded. “As soon as you got your eyes and will able to go out, you… we will marry”, he paused and my heart skipped a beat. “What?” I whispered without lifting my face. I knew that he could see me and I couldn’t see him. That was why I didn’t want him to see my expressions too. “You need someone with you who can help you in your revenge and keep your mother safe. I will help you but I also need you to help me in my revenge. It…. It’s like give and take.. you know…We are in the same boat and can help each other”, he paused and that was when I already had made up my mind. If we were in the same boat then there was no way that he would betray me ever. “I will marry you”, I blurted out with a word of finality. “You haven’t listened to the whole agreement”, he protested and I lifted my head up. I looked up but sighed because I couldn’t see him. “I trust you and know one thing…. You know the pain of betrayal so you will never betray me”, I raised my hand and cupped his face. He put his hand on my hand and leaned in my touch. “You have never told me your name”, I said while caressing his face. He had a bit of stubble this time. “I am Demitry”, he spoke after a few seconds of pause as if he was debating with him whether to tell his name to me or not. I smiled and then said, “Hi, Demitry…. I am Mariam Lockhart”. I felt his hand on my face and I leaned down in his touch. “Hi Mariam… I am Demitry Davenport and…….. (there was a pause again)…. Your future husband”, he said but this time his tone was gentle. “Demitry”, I spoke after a short pause. I couldn’t see him but could say that his gaze was continuously on me. “Yeah”, he spoke while caressing my cheek. “What if I don’t get my eyesight back”, I spoke my fear and his hand stopped moving on my face. There was silence again that made my heart go wild. He gently pulled me towards him again and put my head on his chest. “Then I will arrange an eyes surgery for you”, he said gently but holding a determination. I was overwhelmed by his care or whatever it was and whispered thank you to him. He pulled me away from him after a while and then spoke again, “Now… don’t worry so much about your condition. I will take care of everything. All you need to have positive thoughts about our future and to plan your revenge for them”. I nodded while he started his work on me. “You know everything about me?” I asked him again and heard him sigh. “Yeah… when I found you in the forest, I sent my man to investigate you. You were almost dead. I know everything about you since the day you were born”, he told truthfully while cleaning my body. My shoulders, lower ribs and lower limb were still not in a good shape to do everything on my own. “I am going to remove your clothes so that I can take you for a proper bath today”, he said and my heart skipped a beat this time. It was not like he didn’t change my clothes before. But this would be the first time that he told me what he was going to do and I knew that I had only a few bandages on my body now. “You are here for more than seven months, Mariam…. I have seen enough of you.. there is no need to blush this much”, he said in a teasing tone and I immediately protested. “I am not blushing”, I said while hitting on his chest as he had already taken me up in his embrace in bridal style. He chuckled and this was the first time that I had heard him laughing. “Yes you are”, he said again in a teasing tone. I groaned but didn’t say a word this time. There was no use in arguing with him. He would win in the end. His words were now ringing in my mind. I was here for more than seven months. My mom was there alone for seven months. Did she know that I am alive? Did she believe their lies? “She didn’t believe them. She is still in this hope that you will return because my man has told her that you are alive but your life is in danger. She hasn’t told anyone about you being alive and is waiting for your return eagerly”, Demitry spoke while placing me on a chair. I felt that he read my mind. How could he know then what I was thinking? “How is she?” I asked in a low voice. He gently pulled the t-shirt that I was wearing right now upwards. “She is alright and my two men are around her to keep her safe. Your fiancée is trying hard to make her accept your death. One of my men is staying with her as your distant relative so that your fiancée couldn’t harm him in any other way”, he told me and I felt my blood boil in anger. “It was not easy to agree your mom stay with a stranger. Then I arranged a video call when you were unconscious around six months ago. I will not lie that she didn’t cry when….. she saw you completely wrapped in the bandage. She almost got fainted. Then my man ensured her that we are trying our best to keep you alive and you are progressing. Your tattoo on your shoulder is the only thing that made her recognize you. Till that day, he is with your mother for her safety”, Demitry told me everything while arranging my bath and then slowly he placed me inside a bathtub that I assumed. “Tomorrow… I will take you to the doctor for a thorough check up and to see the progress of your eye muscles. Today… after bath…. You can talk to your mother too so that she can be at ease”, I held his hand tightly when he told me. “Really… c… can I talk to my mom”, I was again choked on my voice. He sighed and then stroked my hair gently. “Yeah… now.. let me bathe you”, he said and then I released his hand. I was happy now and eager to talk with my mom.
