THEY ARE BUNCH OF CROOKS

Demitry’s P.O.V. I looked at Mariam beside me. She was looking so nervous right now. We were standing on the porch of my ancestral mansion. Our fingers were intertwined and I could feel sweat on her hand. “You will be alright”, I tried to comfort her. She looked at me with a nervous smile. “What if I fail?” she asked me in a nervous tone. I smiled and raised our hands up. I kissed her knuckles and said, “You still have me, right?” She smiled again and nodded. “Let’s go”, I said, and then we both started walking inside the mansion. The first person that I met was my aunt, Kaida Davenport. I hated this woman to my core because she was nothing but fake. She had done so many surgeries to get a perfect face and her heart was so black to be true. “Demitry… finally you are here”, she chirped aloud, getting the attention of other guests too. I was really annoyed by her approach but I masked my all emotions. “Aunt Kaida”, I called her formally. She was in her fifties. Due to all the surgeries she had gone through, she looked a bit younger than her real age. She came near to me and hugged me tightly. “You look more handsome than the last time I saw you”, she passed a fake smile. “You look the same as the last time I saw you”, I said in a cold tone and her face immediately went stone. Suddenly her eyes went to Mariam and she narrowed her eyes on her. “Who is she? I have never seen her before”, she asked me in a pitched tone this time only to get more attention. I scoffed at the reactions of all the guests present around us. They were now looking at Mariam as if she was a thing on display. I looked at Mariam who was now looking at Kaida with cold eyes. “Hi, I am Mariam Davenport, Demitry’s wife”, she suddenly introduced herself with a confidence that surprised me too. “What?” Kaida didn’t take her hand and yelled in shock. Her eyes were widened in shock. “You heard her”, I said with a mocking smile on my lips. “What is this commotion?” I heard a familiar voice and looked in his direction. He had a smirk on his face and he walked towards us lazily. I stayed cold and looked back at Mariam. “Let’s go”, I said to her and she nodded. “What’s so hurry, son? Who is this pretty lady beside you? She is not familiar”, he eyed Mariam after standing beside Kaida. “She is my wife, Mariam Davenport”, I introduced her in a cold tone. He also raised his brows in surprise and a wicked smile crept onto his lips. “Are you sure, pretty lady that you married him, huh?” he asked Mariam in a taunting tone. “I am pretty much sure about this, Mr Davenport. I am married to Demitry”, she answered with a pleasant smile on her lips and then she tucked her hand around me and looked at me lovingly. I could tell that she was not acting right now. It was actual love in her eyes and I felt myself smiling. I looked back at my uncle and aunt and knitted my brows in confusion. “You actually smiled?” I face went cold again when I heard Kaida’s voice with disbelief. “Of course, he smiled. Why are you so shock? This is normal for a human being to smile, right Demitry?” Mariam asked me in an innocent tone and I couldn’t hold back my smile and shook my head in agreement while smiling widely this time. She grinned and then looked back at my uncle and aunt with the smile on her face. “Come on”, I put my hand on her hand on my arm and left them glued at their places. “What’s wrong with those people?” Mariam frowned while looking around. We were walking towards the place where my grandfather was sitting with some of his friends. “Ignore them”, I said to her briefly and she scoffed. “Who cares about them?” she said in a nonchalant way making me smile again. I needed to control myself hard tonight. I didn’t want any of them to see that I was vulnerable in front of her. It was not good. We reached at the place where my grandfather was sitting. He looked up at me and then gave a sharp look to Mariam. “Grandfather”, I greeted him with a small bow. “Who is she?” he immediately asked me in a cold tone. Mariam flinched beside me due to pitch of his voice. Her grip tightened on my arm. “She is my wife… Mariam… he is my grandfather, Mr Devon Davenport, head of the Davenport family”, I introduced her with my grandfather in a formal way. “Good evening, Mr Davenport… and happy birthday to you”, she formally greeted him and bowed a little in a gesture. He eyed her up and down and then looked at her in disdain. “So, you find a toy to play with on the name of marriage, huh? Look at her… do you really think that she will love you when she can get any other man for herself? She is with you only for your money”, he spat the venom against her while giving her a disgusting look. I was about to say something in anger when I felt a tug on my arm. “May I ask, Mr Davenport… who has gifted you that picture over there?” she suddenly pointed towards the picture that was hanging on the wall behind my grandfather. The corner of my mouth twitched and I felt proud on my choice. “Do you think that I am a piece of charity or what? I bought this photo”, he said proudly and this time, she smiled again. “Now, I can’t deny that I don’t have your money in my account”, she said in a mysterious way and my grandfather knitted his brows on her. “I am the one who shot the photo, Mr Davenport. You can check with whoever has sold this photo to you. I am a wildlife photographer and my line of work needs passion, courage and (she laughed a little here)… a little craziness and as much as I know, money can’t buy all these traits. So your allegation about me being a gold-digger is completely wrong because my work is my passion and I almost lost my life while shooting these photos there in the Jim Corbett Park back then”, she said proudly. Suddenly she came forward and pulled her leg forward. “See this scars… I got this there”, she pulled her dress a little higher and my grandfather’s eyes widened in shock. “O My… it’s really big and I think deep”, one of my grandfather’s friends exclaimed. “This is tiger’s claw, Sir”, Mariam informed him with a proud smile and everyone gasped. “So, being a gold digger can’t save my life out there during my work but paid me enough so that I can sleep peacefully in the night with a full belly under a safe roof. And about my relationship with Demitry, we are married and happily married”, she said and then looked at me with a prideful smile on her lips. “Don’t tell me that you are Mariam Lockhart?” We both moved our gaze in the direction of the voice and my whole body stiffened immediately. Mariam tightened her grip on my arm again and then spoke softly, “I was Mariam Lockhart before… now because I am married to him, I am Mariam Davenport now”, she nodded and then regained her posture again. The couple came forward towards us while looking at Mariam. “Hey brother.. long time no see, huh?” I scoffed at the enthusiastic voice of my cousin who was now standing in front of me. “Hi, I am Sasha Wilson, I am Oliver’s fiancée”, I heard Sasha’s chirpy voice. “Hi, I am Mariam Davenport, Demitry’s wife”, Mariam introduced herself in a very calm voice and shook her hand. Sasha’s eyes went wide immediately. “You actually married her?” Oliver asked me in disbelief and I raised my brows. “What’s wrong in marrying her?” I asked him in a cold tone. Sasha was startled by this revelation and looked at Mariam with wide eyes. “Happy birthday grandfather”, he greeted grandfather with extra sweet voice. “Happy birthday, grandpa”, Sasha also wished her with a sweet smile on her lips but I could see that she was glancing on Mariam from time to time. I wrapped my hand around Mariam’s waist and pulled her closer to me possessively. “Thanks to all of you…. Now you go and enjoy yourself but meet me after the party you two”, grandfather instructed both of us and both I and Oliver nodded together. “Let’s go”, I said to Mariam. She was about to nod when my grandfather called her. We looked at him again. “We need to talk. Find me after you have your dinner tonight”, he instructed her and she nodded with a small smile on her lips. “Okay, Mr Davenport”, she said with respect and then looked at me. I was looking at my grandfather with narrowed eyes. She was doing good till now but I knew my grandfather. I was sure that this meeting would not end well. We then moved towards the hall where the banquet was going on. I introduced her with some other family members too. As expected their reactions were what I thought about. Mariam greeted everyone with a pleasant smile but I could say that she was giving her best fake smile. I almost laughed wholeheartedly when she made a nasty remark on one of my aunt comments about her family background. I saw a very different side of my sweet innocent Mariam tonight. Even Rehaana was surprised to see her taking everything confidently. She was a mirror image of what I had in my mind for my wife. The most funny part was when someone asked her with a disdain in her voice how did she deal with my scars during on intimate period. She smartly slapped her face indirectly by saying that at least the scars on my face were visible. The look that lady gave to Mariam was worth to watch. They were nothing but bunch of crooks who knew how to hide their true emotions behind a fake mask of companionship. Rehaana and Mariam went along in the party. I could feel some burning gazes on me and Mariam and knew who were they but I didn’t pay any attention to them. They were nothing to me. I could see that Mariam was tired after three continuous hours of chatting with others. I took her and Rehaana to a blank table and settled her there. “What’s wrong?” I asked her in a worried tone when she hissed in pain. “My feet… I am not used to high heels”, she told me in a tired tone. I sat down near her on my one knee and lifted her gown a little up to see her ankles. “They are swollen. I think you should remove them for a while”, I told her and she nodded. “I will help her, Demitry. You stand up… everyone is looking at you”, Rehaana whispered but I ignored her. I took her legs in my hand and gently remove the heels. “Demitry”, I heard her and looked up. She was blushing furiously while biting her lower lip. I smirked at her reaction and just shook my head. I put down her legs again on the ground and stood up. “I am going to bring some food for you. You two just wait here”, I told them and then went away from them. I went straight to the food stall and asked a server to prepare two plates for me and served them to the table. “So… you are now in love, huh?” I heard her voice but didn’t give ear to her. “It’s none of your concern”, I said and took a drink from the table. “She is not worthy of your time, Demitry… I mean look at her. She has no class… no family background”, I immediately cut her off. “But she has a golden heart. She knows how to make her man feel special and content”, I said without even looking at her. “You really believe her?” she again made a nasty remark and this time I looked at her. “Yes… I believe her because she never used her words to make me feel special”, I said without blinking for once and then stormed away from her.
