Mariam’s P.O.V.
“Mom”, I yelled aloud as soon as I came out of the car. Mom was already at the door as we were both in touch through the phone as soon as I came out of the airport. “Marian…. My baby”, she yelled aloud too while running towards me. We both met in halfway and embraced each other tightly. I was seeing her after one year and I can’t describe the feeling. We both were crying badly while staying in a tight embrace of each other. “Never ever do this again, Mariam or else I don’t know what I will do to you”, she said while sobbing aloud. “I won’t do this again, mom I promise you”, I replied to her while hiding my face in the crook of her neck.
After I don’t know how much time I felt a light pat on my back. I looked behind me and found Demitry looking at me in worry. “You can’t cry this much”, he said in a worried tone, and I immediately lifted my head. I wiped my face and looked at him apologetically. I looked at my mom who was now looking at us questioningly. “I am sorry that I forgot to introduce you. Mom, this is my husband, Mr. Demitry Davenport, and Dem, this is my mom, Mrs. Maria Lockhart”, I introduced them with a wide smile while tugging my hand around Demitry’s arm.
My mom gasped in shock while looking at us with wide-opened eyes. I felt Demitry go stiff but I tightened my grip on his arm, ensuring him that I am with him. “What are you talking about, huh? How can you marry without informing me? And who is he? What’s his family background?” she eyed Demitry while looking at him from head to toe. It was not like that I didn't inform mom about my marriage with Demitry. It was clear that she was now pulling Demitry's legs while faking anger and shock. I giggled when I felt how anxious Demitry was “Mom, I will tell you everything, but can we go inside?” I asked her while looking around. I played along with her only to tease Demitry. Our neighbours had started gathering around us and they were looking at us as if they were seeing me for the first time.
Mom slapped her forehead and looked at Demitry apologetically. “Sorry, son, I was so excited to see my daughter after almost a year that I forgot my manners. Let’s go inside first”, she said while smiling sheepishly. Demitry smiled nervously and I giggled once again. I told him before that my mom never judged a person by his face. He was still nervous. We went inside our home and my eyes immediately watered while looking at the familiar space that is my home. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, inhaling the familiar scent. “Hey, you are home now”, I heard Demitry’s gentle voice comforting me. I opened my eyes and looked at him with teary eyes.
“Why are you still standing? Sit down you two”, I heard mom scolding us. “We are sitting, mom”, I said while wiping my tears. We went to the couch and sat beside each other. Mom brought some snacks and coffee for us after asking Demitry about his preference. I could say that Demitry was still nervous because he was still thinking that my mom would refuse to acknowledge him as my husband. After finishing our coffee, I told mom everything that happened after I went to that trip with Warrick and Valerie. I told her everything that they did to me and at what state did Demitry find me deep in the forest.
Mom listened to me without interrupting me but the change of emotions on her face from time to time told everything that she was throughout the narration. Shock, anger, heartbreak, frustration, almost all negative emotions I saw on her face. Demitry kept holding my hand the whole time, giving me the strength to tell everything. There was a thick, tense silence in the room for a good few minutes. None of us spoke a word. My mom was sitting like a statue in front of us. Demitry had wrapped his hand around my shoulder giving me the strength which I needed the most during the narration.
Suddenly my mom stood up and walked towards Demitry. Demitry stood up while looking at me anxiously. I was also anxious because there was no emotion on my mom’s face. I also stood up while looking at her. She raised her trembling hand and put her on his chest. Tears started forming in her eyes. She opened her mouth but couldn’t able to say anything as she choked badly. Suddenly she trembled hard and crushed on his chest. Demitry immediately wrapped his hand around her waist and saved her from falling. “Mom” I yelled in a choked voice and put my hand on Demitry’s arm in fear. Mom burst out in tears while crying aloud. I also started sobbing silently. “Hey, don’t cry…. I don’t know how to console a crying woman”, Demitry spoke in an awkward voice after some time making both me and mom laugh while crying bitterly. “Thank you…thank you Demitry…. For saving my baby…. You are an angel sent by the heavens for saving my daughter’s life…. Thank you…. I owe you my life,” mom thanked him so many times he looked at me helplessly while rubbing her back gently. He was still holding her in his embrace safely. “I am no angel, Mrs. Lockhart. It was my luck that I was there and saved her. She is the gift that I received from the heavens who filled all the colours in my life,” Demitry comforted her while looking at me lovingly. I blushed while still crying and looked at him shyly. Mom also laughed and then lifted her face from his chest.
“Enough crying and depression now. My daughter came back, and this is enough for me,” she said while wiping her face from the back of her hand. “Mariam…... take him to your room. I am going to prepare a meal,” she instructed me and then looked at Demitry with a genuine smile. He responded with a smile too. Mom patted his chest before going to the kitchen. “I am going to bring our luggage,” he informed me. “I am coming too,” I said and then we both went out to our car. I stopped in my tracks when I saw both Warrick and Valerie at my doorstep. My whole body burnt in anger, and I balled up my fist while looking at them with hate and anger. Demitry held my hand and tightened his grip on my hand. Both of them were looking at me with widened eyes in shock as if they had seen a ghost. “Let’s go,” Demitry whispered to me and wrapped his hand around my shoulder.
“M……Mariam?” Valerie was the first who spoke while stuttering hard in shock. I didn’t reply to her and followed Demitry towards our car. Demitry took out our bags from the trunk and held my hand again. “Hey,” he called me in a gentle voice, and I looked up. “Don’t waste your energy on them,” he said in a low voice and I nodded. We both moved towards home again but stopped when Warrick blocked our path. “Why didn’t you call me all this time and who is this man?” he asked me in an angry tone and looked at Demitry in disgust, infuriating my anger more. “You must be sad that I am back, and I know everything that you did behind my back. It's your bad luck that I escaped my death planned by you. Now, you have no right to ask me anything, Warrick and this man is my saviour and…… my husband,” I tried to keep myself as calm as possible for me while looking at him.
His eyes widened in shock when he heard who Demitry was to me. “Warrick……. Valerie…. Get out from here and I dare you to come back here again,” before he could speak something else, my mom’s voice thundered the whole area. We all looked at her. She was standing at the door fuming in anger. “Come inside Mariam, Demitry. There is no need to waste your time and energy on backstabbers,” she loathed him too while looking at him with hatred. Both I and Demitry walked towards mom. I gave Warrick one last cold look before shutting the door on his face.
“Are you alright?” I heard Demitry’s concerned voice and looked at him. He looked worried for me and it melted my heart. “I am alright”, I gave him an assuring smile and he immediately pulled me in his side embrace. “Awe… look at you two”, I heard mom voice full of amusement. I looked at her this time and blushed hard when I saw her grinning while looking at us. She laughed while clapping her hands like a child. “It’s already lunchtime. Go to your room and freshen up you two”, mom spoke after her laughter died while instructing both of us. “Yes mom”, I said and then looked at Demitry who also had a small smile on his lips right now. Mom walked away towards the kitchen and I pulled Demitry upstairs towards my room.
“This is my room where I spent all my life”, I opened the door of my room with a wide proud smile on my lips. He entered behind me and I took a deep breath of the familiar scent of my room. The familiar fresh smell of my room entered my nostrils, giving me a feeling of being at home once again. “It’s really cosy”, I opened my eyes when I heard Demitry’s comment on my room. I looked back at him and grinned. “I know this is very small in comparison to our bedroom in your house but”, I was not embarrassed about how small my room was because this was something that my parents build up through their hard work and love. I was proud of what I had from them. Demitry didn’t let me finish what I wanted to say as he put his hand on my mouth to stop me.
“The size of the room doesn’t matter, love. What matters is the warmth, comfort and safety that a room can provide to you. Yes, this room is very small to what we have in the city but that room lacks the warmth and comfort of this room”, he said with a small and genuine smile on his lips. Before I could respond to him, he flipped me and pulled me in his embrace. Now my back was resting on his broad chest. I wrapped my hands around his hands on my waist. “Look at these walls”, he whispered while putting his chin on my shoulder.
There were so many photographs that I put on the wall behind my bed. These pictures were from different time periods. “These are the memories that you have collected all these years. Look at the smiles, the contentment on your faces…. The happiness in your eyes”, he paused and I snuggled into his chest feeling the warmth of his love. “You are richer than me, Mariam”, he said in whispers making me laugh this time. He was right here though. He might have wealth and power but what his family lacked was love and warmth of the family. “Don’t worry…. You will be as rich as I am”, I said and looked back at him over my shoulder.
He kissed the bridge of my nose and spun me once again. I wrapped my hands around his waist and put my head on his chest while closing my eyes. “I am sure that I will spend the most beautiful days of my life here with you”, I once again spoke in whispers but his words were enough to make me feel proud of what I had here. "Enough now... now go and freshen up. I will unpack our bags", I then pushed Demitry away from me and instructed him. Mom was waiting for us downstairs and I wanted to spend some more time with my mother right now. "As you wish, my love", he pecked my lips with a teasing smile on his lips before releasing me from his grip. I blushed and pushed him towards the washroom. The way he called me, my love, always made my heart pace up in my chest and so many butterflies flickered at once. I shook my head while smiling ear to ear when he closed the door of the washroom. I took a deep breath and then started unpacking our bags. The thoughts of Warrick and Valerie were now somewhere deep back in my mind and I definitely wouldn't let them ruin my time with my mom and my husband here.
