Two years later
"Rain! We're already late. The new CEO is already in the conference room. Now all the attention is on us. Please, hurry up, girl".
Natalie's annoyed voice echoes through my office as she turns her head around the door. I wanted to finish the files I am working on before going to the introductory meeting of our new boss. For weeks he has been the topic of every conversation on the work floor. Some staffers have looked up his name on google and run his picture through all departments. All go crazy for the man. The young single staffers are drooling over him, there have been several bets about who will hook up with him first. And of course, they didn't include me in their folly, everyone knows I don't have time for this nonsense. I'm always focused on my work and never care about girlish stuff.
Natalie grabs my hand and pulls me behind her to the meeting place.
And she is right, we are the last to enter and everyone glares at us with a sigh. The new CEO wanted to start when everyone was present, so they all were waiting for us. "Thank you for taking your time to meet me here," begins the man in front, clearly addressing Natalie and me. With bowed head, I study my nails, not feeling offended at all. Beside me, Natalie blushes like a beet. "Gosh, Rain. He's drop-gorgeous. Look at his eyes, they reach deep into your soul. No one will be able to hide anything from him," she declares, drooling with her fingers against her mouth to soften her voice.
Still uninterested, I keep my head down.
Natalie doesn't get me interested, I know my friend is in love with a different man almost every month. I can't keep up with her crushes. They all have one thing in common, though; they are blonde in all shapes, muscular and with blue eyes. So it won't surprise me if the Adonis she makes so much drama about has the same features. All I'm thinking about right now is getting out of this meeting quickly so I can get on with the project I'm currently working on. New CEO or not, the work goes on whoever is in charge.
Half an hour later, things finally seemed to be moving along.
Several staff members walk up to the front to personally welcome and shake hands with the new boss. In all the commotion that ensues, I try to leave unseen. I grab my agenda, bow my head deeper and make a few steps toward the door. "Hmmm, Miss Rain, if it's convenient for you, I'd like to have a word with you now," I hear a deep, masculine voice. Slowly I look around to see if there is another Miss Rain in the room so I can continue my way to the door.
I now feel all eyes on me.
Shit! Now I do have to look up and go where the new boss and the vice presidents of the company are sitting. I had wanted to delay this meeting as long as possible, but it looks like I won't get my way. Finally, I lift my face and look straight into two breathtaking blue eyes. My heart misses a beat, Natalie was right. These eyes penetrate your soul, nothing goes unnoticed by them.
I clear my throat and think hard about what his name was again.
Time is ticking, I need to be inventive. "Morning, Sir. You wanted to speak to me?" I ask politely but aloofly. He holds my gaze for several seconds before speaking. "Yes. I understand that the project to build a luxury yacht mooring pier is under your management. You are in charge of the numbers," he states over some heads. I keep my composure, although those eyes upset me greatly.
"That's right, Sir. Natalie is my assistant and knows all about it," I try to shift his attention to my friend. For me, she gets to have a lot of fun with her new crush. But he pretends not to hear my last words. "Join me in half an hour with the report. We can discuss it further than," he replies. It is clearly an order, refusal is not possible. "Yes, Sir, as you say," I reply meekly and now step straight toward the door.
When I am back in my office, I collect all the reports belonging to the file.
I still need to finish the calculations, but I know how to explain them to him so there is no problem with that. Now I only have to figure out the name of the new chief and what more I should know about him. Of course, I can count on Natalie for that, the woman has lifted the entire baptismal record from the man. Just as I have everything together, Natalie returns. "Girl, are you a lucky one. He watched you until you disappeared out the door," she declares. "Are you sure you haven't already met him?" she asks suspiciously as she places her ass on my desk.
"Not in this life, for sure," I joke.
I look up at her. "I have no interest in drama in my life. I'm single and happy and will stay that way for the next few years. No plans for change," I assure her. "Help me with this. I'm supposed to be at his office in a few minutes but his name totally escaped me. Can you update me, please?" Her eyes sparkle again. "Ralph del Conselho, eldest heir to the Conselho clan. His family origins are in Canada, but no one knows more about that. They are rich as hell with several branches of the company worldwide," she lists. "This guy doesn't have to work. He just keeps himself busy with us. Not that I'm complaining," she finishes chuckling.
I roll my eyes.
"Thanks a lot. You saved me from an embarrassing situation. I didn't think he would call me into his office on the very first day," I say, disturbed, picking up the file and stepping out the door....
