I looked at the woman in front of me. The woman I had loved for a whole year in silence.

I felt my heart breaking watching her pull away from me and could feel her anger radiating off her.

“Please don’t do this,” I said.

Cecilia turned around to face the windows but then glared to me. Her bright green eyes that always reminded me of emeralds were full of tears and anger.

“How can you ask that of me?” She screamed. “You knew exactly what you were signing up for when we started this. I am married. We were destined to keep our relationship a secret.”

She continued to walk away from me and I desperately wanted to reach for her, to apologize and tell her she was right.

But I couldn’t.

I would not give in.

One of us had to fight for what we had.

“I can’t walk away from us Cecilia. I cannot continue to be with you in secret, not when I know that you deserve better. That I deserve better as well!”

Cecilia ignored me, but I could see the tears running down her face.

Why was she so stubborn? Why did she try to deny her self happiness by forcing herself to live in fear because of her husband? Her hateful and cold husband?

————————————————

Cecilia Campos is a young woman who was forced into a marriage by her mother. Her husband is a cold man who merely respects her and sees her as an object. With a year of being married to him, she grew accustomed to the lack of affection and convinced herself that she was not worthy of happiness. Her husband‘s best friend Gabriel Dupont on the other hand, loved her in secret. He would do anything for her, and she didn’t know.

Chapter 1
Gabriel And that was when I saw her. At the wedding of my friend Leon Allard. Except she wasn’t a guest. She wasn’t a friend or a marriage eager young lady. She was the young woman marrying my friend. She had chocolate brown hair that fell to her shoulders and emerald green eyes. She was petite but I could see the fire and the fight in her eyes. Leon looked at her as if she were nothing. But the way she looked in her white wedding gown, with red roses in her hands and her cheeks and lips flushed pink, I swore heaven was on earth. Leon looked tired and bored. The young lady next to him looked defeated and angry. Anyone paying attention knew that neither of them were fond of each other. I had heard Leon talk endlessly about finding a young wife to marry him so that he could inherit the money his parents had left him. And he had a wrote to me and other friends that during his time in Spain, he had found the perfect wife. All he had to do was pay the mother enough money to pay off her debts and the young girl would be his. I had hoped that with time my friend would fall in love and find happiness with the young girl he was to marry. But now, seeing her in front of me, beautiful, innocent and full of spirit, I prayed that neither of them would fall in love. I knew God would punish me, and that I was committing a great sin by desiring my friend’s wife, but I couldn’t help myself. I was doomed to love her in secret for the rest of my life.
