Eight: Deacon Foy

Eight: Deacon Foy He could have headed back to the ranch and waited for Elle to call if she needed him. But the bar was closer, and the town was closer to Crescent Manor. So, Deacon decided to go to Blue Moon bar to wait to see if Ellery would call. When he walked in, Selene La Pier was at the bar, and she smiled at him. She had a round face, brown skin, brown eyes, and long, jet black hair that was tied up in braids. “Hi, Deacon,” she said as he slipped into his seat at the bar, “what can I get you?” “Just a coffee,” he said, “I’m supposed to be driving Ellery home later on.” Selene raised an eyebrow. “Oh? What’s she doing?” He sighed. “She’s at Crescent Manor.” Selene frowned as she went to the coffee maker and started making his drink. “What’s she doing up at the snootiest place in Glacier Falls?” “I don’t know. She came home wearing a gold necklace the other day, and she says Landry Thayer gave it to her.” Selene coughed. “A gold necklace?” Deacon nodded. “Has Ellery ever talked to Landry a day in her life?” He shrugged. “I don’t know, to be completely honest. I know they for sure didn’t go to school together. He went to that fancy private school in France.” “Deacon, you’ve got to tell that girl you like her. It’s been ages.” “I can’t. I’m older than her. It’d be weird.” “Landry Thayer sure as s**t is older than her, and I don’t think he is going to let that stop him.” He ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t even know if she likes me like that. We’re friends, and I work for her mom. If I tell her, it might make things weird. I don’t want to ruin our friendship.” “It doesn’t have to be ruined just because you tell her the truth. Just be honest with her. It’s better than you moping over her for another year.” “Yeah, yeah,” said Deacon, “I know. But I probably don’t even stand a chance if Landry Thayer is snooping around. He comes from one of the richest families here.” Selene bristled. “I would keep her away from him.” Deacon raised an eyebrow. “Why?” “He used to come into the Blue Moon a lot during his summer vacations. He didn’t even use a fake id. The bouncer said that he would do some weird trick with his eyes that would make him….” He leaned forward. “Make him what?” “It was like mind control,” Selene said, “and it’s not just him. His brother Noel did the same thing, and so did Griffin. And there are rumors that Noel was involved with a girlfriend’s death.” Deacon raised an eyebrow. “I hadn’t heard about that.” “Yeah, it was a few years ago. My boyfriend is a paramedic and he was there when it happened. Everyone said she committed suicide, but Joel says that when he got there two of the Thayer brothers were going at each other screaming. Both were saying that the other was responsible for her death. He says it was brutal.” “Who was the other brother?” “Quentin Thayer,” Selene said, “They say he’s been banished to France because of what happened. Nice punishment, huh?” Deacon snorted. “What a hard life. Must be nice.” Selene handed him his cup of coffee, and Deacon took a sip. It warmed his hands. It was October, and it hadn’t started snowing yet. But it had been chilly outside earlier. “So, what you’re saying is, I should protect her.” Selene chuckled. “No, that’s not what I’m saying. Although, you might not be wrong on that score. But I’d rather see Elle with you than with Landry Thayer. That family is nothing but trouble, mark my words.” “I didn’t know you were so invested in Elle.” “She is one of my employees,” Selene reminded him, “I can’t have my waitress getting scooped up by some rich boy.” Deacon laughed. “I guess that’s true.” Selene smirked. “Exactly. Keep her safe and keep her away from Landry Thayer. He won’t bring anything good to her life.” “I’ll do what I can. But I don’t even know if she likes me that way or not.” “You could always make her like you. You’re charming enough, Deacon. You’ve got that whole polite, cowboy thing going on. That makes plenty of girls weak in the knees. Elle’s no different. She is a Montana girl, after all. Use that drawl and that smile of yours, and I’m sure you could win her over easily.” Deacon blushed. “I think you’ve got too much faith in me, Selene.” Selene smiled. “I’m team Deacon all the way, baby. Ain’t no shame in supporting the simple boys. You can win her over. I’ve got faith in you. You’ve just got to have some faith in yourself, Deacon.” “Yeah faith,” he said, “I’m a little short on that. But I guess I’ll try.”
