Chapter 6: Square One

1337 Words
It was already five years ago, but Kimora could not forget what happened then. She stopped for a schoolyear and transferred to another school after that tragedy and changed herself into a sassy and spunky girl to cover up that dark past. Although there was news about that tragic accident, their real names were withheld. She thought she would be fine if she would act like a changed person, not the withdrawn girl who skipped a year. No matter how her parents pushed her, she just would not budge. Instead, they let her see the therapist Grace told her father about. She did go with her mother, but she would not open up. She just listened to the female therapist every single one-hour session. She did not want to worry her family any longer than that, so she decided to continue studying at school the following year. Her family was actually relieved she changed, thinking she was doing fine at last. But inside, she was not really. She would see Cassie in her dreams time and time again, provoking her into a fight. But she just wakes up with peas of sweat on her face, neck, chest and back, sitting on her bed and panting fast. Ever since it happened she never slept without the light on. Now seeing that dragon shifter killed by Medakkaru, she could not help herself but have a panic attack. She remembered that day when she kicked Cassie and heard the breaking of her neck before she fell to the mat hard. Her breathing was now shallow and rapid, as she hyperventilated. She could not breathe well even though she tried her best to get air into her host’s lungs. His whole body trembled without restrain. “Why are you turning your back? Turn around! Turn around! He’s going to come back alive any second now!” Medakkaru shouted at her, voice quivering as his body shook uncontrollably. “I-I c-cant f-fight… I p-promised… I w-won’t…” She tried hard to make the words come out of his mouth. “What?” “L-leave m-me a-alone. I d-don’t w-want t-to be here!” she said, squeezing his eyes shut. She heard him cuss in his head. She refused to think about Cassie. “Who’s Cassie?” he inquired. “Why don’t you want to think of her?” Flashes of Cassie in her dobok and their match appeared in his mind. Medakkaru tried to figure out what was wrong with those images. But she blocked everything before he could see more of her thoughts. Now that was something. Incredible even. He thought he could freely see what was on her mind when in fact she was inside his body. This was truly a puzzle to him. He had no idea where she was from because from what she had remembered, she appeared to live in another kind of world, which was different from his. “Who are you really? How did you end up in my body?” Medakkaru asked in a serious tone as his body slowly calmed down. But his breathing was still a bit fast and shallow. “You crazy Medakkaru! You cost me a life!” His head snapped in Forbreth’s direction. He was already up! Not only that, as the white sword was in his hand. But with Medakkaru’s instinct, he was able to procure his and blocked his opponent’s attack. A loud clang vibrated in the air, sparks flying. The audience held their breaths as each observed Medakkaru’s weird actions. “Let me f*cking do this! Just stay back!” Medakkaru shouted at Kimora. “I don’t want to fight!” She withdraw his hand when he was about to strike Forbreth. “This fricking woman just won’t stop bothering me!” he complained, but Forbreth did not care. “Are you just going to let me die, huh?” His opponent thrust his weapon, but Kimora heard Medakkaru’s words. She did not want him to die again either. But what could she do? She tried to let go of his hand, so her host was able to block his adversary’s attacks. “Now this is more like it.” “Don’t kill him!” she warned. “The f*ck I won’t! I want to win this duel, for your information!” “I’m telling you! You can’t!” she hollered. He cussed again and again, as he spun around and counterattacked his enemy. At the same time, he summoned the saptum daggers, leaped in the air and rained these sharp blades on Forbreth, who actually did not expect it. One caught Forbreth in the neck and another right in the middle of his forehead. The brown level dragon shifter dropped to the ground with a loud thud and another life taken from his record. Nonetheless, Medakkaru still had more to take before he could move on to the next level. He had to defeat his adversary, push him back to the white level. The audience got up from their seat with thunderous stomps of their feet. The arena was brought into a loud noise of claps and calls and hoots. And yet, Medakkaru’s body began to shake once more when his eyes saw the immobile body in front of him. Inside, he was annoyed for feeling this. He could not feel her emotions, but she could affect him in the physical level as though it was her own. It was really weird. “Not again!” he complained, out of breath. His breath was brought to the opposite side of the arena, away from Forbreth’s lying body. “You can’t just do this to me everytime!” “I-I can’t h-help it!” “I need to frigging win this!” he reminded her and gritted his teeth as it seemed to chatter as his body spasmed. “Do you remember?” His white sword and daggers disappeared from his hands. “Now, I need those! Forbreth’s going to get back up soon!” He looked up to the sky and found the Dracua real-time counter. For killing his opponent twice, he had more points. “You see that? Ten thousand points more! All of that will go back to zero if I’m back to square one, woman! And I can’t let you do that to me!” “I-I d-don’t want to f-fight again. I-it’s not g-good. It’s not!” she whispered, stuttering. “It’s not you who’s fighting, woman. Technically and physically, it’s me. Does it make sense to you now? You’re just holding me back!” he pointed out, annoyed more than ever. He was never frustrated like this before. Even when he was back and forth in three levels, it was nothing compared to this issue with her. It was driving him mad! Before he could even add more to tell her, Forbreth was already up, and his eyes were murderous. He changed into his brown dragon self and blew fire at Medakkaru without warning. “Oh, you f*ucking Forbreth! You bastard!” he screamed as the fire devoured his body. As the scorching heat engulfed his entire being, he saw the gold-colored Dracua tracker take points one by one until it became zero, and he dropped to the hard ground as his vision blacked out. He could not hear the deafening cheers of the audience that celebrated Forbreth’s victory. Medakkaru’s older brothers who were among them exchanged glances, sighed and shook their heads helplessly. “Something’s wrong with him,” Pildogoz murmured to his younger brother Mirkatthun.
