~Adrian~ "She isn't yours?" The question fell from my lips before my mind processed the words. Of course the whelp wasn't hers. Why hadn't I considered that? Her head whipped in my direction almost as if she had forgotten I was there. The whelp began to fuss before she could answer my question. Sapphire. I would never become sick of her name. I was slowly becoming obsessed with the angel before me. Every second, a deeper connection was being formed. For some strange reason, I felt drawn to her, a magical string connecting us forever. It was like I was meant to meet her, meant to become her protection and meant to cherish her the way she deserved. A shuffling noise drew me out of my thoughts, as my focus shifted to watching her rummage through the cupboards. "How can they have diapers but no wipes? Where the hell are the n*****s on these tiny bottles?" Her frustration made itself known as she slammed the cupboards. A cute crease making itself known between her eyebrows. My fingers tingled with the need to smooth out the beautiful crease. "Sapphire," the gruff way her voice rolled off my tongue, didn't give her name any justice. Her head whipped in my direction as she paused her destruction. "The n*****s are sterilized in the last draw to your left and the wipes are under the diapers in the draw." Her crease changed into one of confusion as she turned back to the cupboard. As she pulled open the drawers and got the supplies she needed, I could see the tension slowly releasing out of her shoulders. "How did you know that?" She asked softly, as she made her way to the clear, plastic bassinet. I watched as she prepared the supplies and unwrapped the whelp. As if on cue, the little one started screaming. "I have been here many times, let me help." I suggested absentmindedly as I moved towards the whelp. I took the pink wrap and cocooned the baby's upper body, making the fussing lessen. "Warm the wipes with your breath before wiping her." "Do you have a child?" She asked me, though her attention was solely on the whelps changing. "No, just younger siblings. My sister was the worst. She had to be swaddled twenty-four/ seven, the same as being held. We always joked that's when our mother started going gray." Her eyes lit up as she lifted the whelp in her arms and stared into my eyes. Just meeting her has changed my life. I wasn't even sure if I could live without her anymore. "To answer your question, no. I am not this little princess' mother. Though, it would seem now I am. My.... mother died in childbirth, leaving my little sister behind. I am her only family." Her sad eyes connected to the emerald greens of her sisters. She slowly teased the whelps' mouth with the n****e until she latched on. She was a natural. "You must have been close to her." I commented quietly, fishing for information. She seemed cold for someone who just lost their mother. What was her story? "Ha," Her laughter echoed around the room before she caught her breath. "Never. Once my father died at three, she began doing drugs and sleeping around. She was gone for weeks while five-year-old me took care of myself. I didn't know she was pregnant again. Honestly though, its better off she's gone.... Sorry, I don't know why I told you all of that." "Your fine." I commented softly before sitting beside her. Her body tensed as she peeked at me with the side of her eyes. It took almost an hour of silence before she relaxed, and the whelp finally fell asleep. "Who was that man?" She looked at me skeptically before debating with herself. It honestly didn't look like she would answer me until she whispered, almost inaudible, "My ex I was with him for ten years. I thought he would change, stop hurting me, become better. I was wrong. I am only happy I never married him and never gave him my virtue." I heard every word even while she mumbled the last statement. How old was she? How could she put up with ten years of abuse? "How old are you?" I questioned, matching her whispering state. "What a random question." She looked at me with a puzzled expression before sighing. "Twenty - five. Enough about me. Where are you from? Why are you here? Why do you seem to take such an interest in me? How old are you?" She questions with a smirk on her face before bursting with laughter. She places her hand over her mouth, trying to muffle her laughter so as not to wake the whelp. Her laughter is magical, though I wasn't sure why she was even laughing. "I live in London, I am here to oversee the hospital's progress, there is something about you that pulls me in, and I am thirty - two. Does that answer all your questions?" Her jaw dropped as she looked over at me, a flush of pink tinting her cheeks as her eyes sparkle with unshed tears. "I was joking. I mean... the questions were a joke. I didn't mean to pry." Her eyes turned cold before I could question her reaction as she closed herself back up. What had she been through to give such a response? Why was I drawn to her in a way no other woman has enticed out of me? How would I be able to stay away after this? "You should go." Sapphire stated as she stared at the little princess sleeping peacefully in her arms. "What is her name?" I asked softly, not even attempting to move from my spot next to her. As my thigh softly brushes against hers. Before she could answer, a soft knock came from the door, as the blond nurse popped her head in slightly. "I am sorry to disturb you, but I need to take the little miss for her infant hearing test and a man is here for you." She seemed nervous, and I couldn't blame her after the last man to show up left that nasty bandage on her forehead. "Ummm...." Sapphire speaks softly as she looks over at me. "I can go with the nurse to keep an eye on the little princess if you want and leave two of my guards at your door." I suggested, seeing the hesitation she was expressing. She nodded slowly, as her shoulders seemed to slightly relax. "Thank you." Her whisper was barely audible, and I knew I couldn't imagine leaving her again. No matter who protested the idea.
