Eddie
“You practiced all this for four years, you’re ready for your first case. You got this. You got this. You fucken don’t have s**t” huffed Eddie looking at himself in the mirror this was the first time he was going to defend someone at court. It was not the first time his been in one. He did so much theories following around his mentor advocate Steel, but this time he was not the student taking notes anymore, he was going to be the one talking to the judge and trying to convince him that his client really was a victim if domestic violence.
The sound of the taxi hooking outside his apartment got him out his torture, right now they was no time for doubts anymore he was needed in court at eight o’clock. The first case the judge was seeing in the morning meaning he was going to be vigilant and awake, putting even more pressure on Eddie to make sure he makes a good impression. He took one last look at himself in the mirror. He combed his brunet hair out of his face, he definitely needed a hair cut, he couldn’t let his hair grow this long, his brown eyes showed exactly how he was feeling, nervous and his thin lips red from chewing at them. He was wearing a new suit his mother bought him when he graduated law school, and hadn’t worn it since then, and he thought it will be a good way for his worried and overbearing mother to wish him luck since he promised he will wear it, and asked his mother not to come to court because this was no school play or a rock star concert where they invite family.
The worst part is he was not the only child. His parents had seven kids and he was number six, but his mother worried about him most, and he had no idea why?. If it was up to her, he will still be living at home and she cooked and took out clothes for him to wear everyday, but Eddie wanted to be independent, didn’t depend on his mother who treated him like he was seventeen, when he was twenty five. Another honk reminded him, that the impatient taxi driver was still outside and he picked up his briefcase and ran out of the door in a hurry. It was already seven thirty in the morning and with Johannesburg traffic, he was sure this ten minutes drive was going to take longer this time.
He ran down the stairs out of the complex’s doors to be met by grey eyes glaring at him, and he opened the door trying to give the angry man a smile “sorry for that, can you please take me to the Johannesburg high court, please” he tried to be polite but the man drove not even saying a word, and it was true after about seventeen minutes he reached the high grey building, and he paid for the taxi, rushing to be set up on his bench before the court hearing could start.
When he got in the court the prosecutor was already there setting up his notes, and smirked at him, before he winked. It was undermining his confidence, this prosecutor seemed like he knew Eddie stood no chance at all in winning this case. And that rattled him a little bit. He went to his table which was on the right-hand side and opened his briefcase to set up but he wasn’t even done when the woman he was defending sat next to him, her eyes red like she had been crying all night.
“Good morning Mr. Wilson” a small voice said and that’s when Eddie realised he was staring.
“Morning Mrs. Davis, are you ready for today?” he saw the hurt in her face, this case was going to be tough but when he saw miss Davis he couldn’t help but take the case, emotional abuse is hard to prove, it more easy to prove physical abuse because of the bruises but how can you explain to somebody else than a man you married for twenty years had been emotionally, and mentally abusing you. He knew the defence attorney was going to come up with so many doubts to convince the judge his client was lying.
“Call me, Cathy” she tries to smile but her eyes was a dead giveaway to her emotions, and Eddie didn’t know if that was a good or bad thing yet. He didn’t want the defence lawyer to know more than he should this early.
“Yes, Cathy relax today we are introducing our case and I swear you will be okay, and don’t look at your husband if you don’t want to, he can’t touch you or assault you in this court” he felt her small hand touching his, and he saw where her eyes where looking and was met by the cocky Mr. Davis with his expensive suit all smiles going to sit next to his defence lawyer not even looking at his scared wife. First sign that he couldn’t careless about her.
“Judge Jones presiding “ said the bailiff and everyone in the court stood to their feet, and the older judge in his late forties with a long black robe with his salt and pepper hair which was unusual for man his age but to each it’s own, entered the court room going to his bench and got sited. He put on his glasses, going through his note ignoring all the people who been standing since he came in. Judge Jones was the worst of the worst. He took no s**t from any lawyer, and was known to be the precise and hated lawyers who wasted his time or are unprepared.
“You all may sit” said the bailiff after judge Jones gave him the go ahead.
“So, Mr Smith what do have today?” he looked at the bailiff and we knew not to talk unless being asked too, the courtroom was like school but worse because people lives were on the line.
“Case409_456 Mrs. Davis vs Mr. Davis in domestic abuse allegations” says the bailiff called Smith and the judge narrowed his eyes at both the plaintiff and defendant. Before speaking.
“Mr. Wilson you can begin to state our case” he stared at Eddie who suddenly had sweaty hands and prayed he didn’t stutter. He knew the defence lawyer was good. It was one of his classmates in law school and he was always number one in his class all his family owned a prestigious law firm and he was to became patner, and take over from his father when he retires.
“Thank you, your honour. Today we are here to prove to you and everyone in this court that Mr. Davis here in the left was emotionally, and verbally abusing his wife of twenty years, I know his defence lawyer will ask if he was that abusive then why didn’t she leave but the answer is simple. Mentally abuse makes sure the victim thinks she is useless and can’t do anything without the accused. For years Mrs. Davis believe she couldn’t, and depended on her husband who called her name’s everyday, that’s until she found out she was pregnant.
“No, she is not pregnant, that w***e can’t even carry a child, and she calls herself a woman” shouted Mr. Davis who didn’t know about this news they only found out last night.
“Objection, your honour. my client had no knowledge of this until now” said Mr. Price the defence lawyer
“the doctor only confirmed it last night, your honour and is in the notes we already gave you, we were not planning to hide this and this document can prove it, it has the date of when Mrs. Davis went for the test and when she got the results.
“Mr. Price can you please. Handle your clients because next time he opens his mouth and cuss in my courtroom I’m going to charge him in contempt before throwing him out of this court until this case is over, and your objection Is overruled. I will got through all the notes, and give you a recess of an hour while I get personal with this case” judge Jones hit the gravel on his table before standing to leave not even waiting for the bailiff to announce it.
“Its going to be okay, after we win this case we are going to file for sole custody for your baby, and you don’t have to see this man ever again.”
“Do you we think we stand a chance?” you could see in her eyes that Cathy was scared but after the stunt Mr. Davis pulled in court with judge Jones as a witness, Eddie knew they were already half way there.
“Yes, and will be back in court in fifty minutes, let’s go to the diner not far from here and I’m going to buy you breakfast” he tried to smile soothing his worried client.
“I’m not hungry, Mr Wilson. I just want this over and done with.”
“And I’m not going to let you starve yourself and that baby you’re carrying, now let’s go eat, and prepare for the hearing” said Eddie holding Cathy’s hand and he didn’t miss the glare he got from Mr. Davis.
The diner was not far from the courthouse so, they both walked talking about the case, but it was mostly Eddie putting Cathy’s mind at ease.
They entered the familiar black and white diner the smell of fresh coffee and their famous pies hitting Eddie's nose but he knew it was early for pie, they went to the table at the corner waiting for one of the waitress he was very familiar with since he spend most of the time in the diner either working or just eating there because he was lazy to cook to take his order.
“I’m just scared for my child Mr. Wilson. What if he tries to kill us? What if we don’t win this case?” Cathy’s kept whining even though Eddie already told her they got a good chance of wining.
“you’re going to win, I promise. You just to ha…..” said Eddie leaving his words to linger in the air while the air was knocked out of his lungs at the sight beside him. The man was tall muscular, with Jett black hair and tattooed on his arm, and chest making wonder how far they went. His eyes went to his face and he saw the his pink lips moving and those green eyes staring at him, and he wanted to drown in them. The man was hardcore handsome.
“Mr. Wilson his taking to you” Cathy said holding his hand and he was drawn out of his thought embarrassed at staring at the stranger for so long, but in his defence he came to this diner a lot, and it was the first time seeing this handsome guy.
“What?” he finally answered with pink cheeks
“The waiter was talking to you, waiting for your order and you were lost in your thoughts is this about the case? Are you also worried?”
“No, I’m mmm.” He really wanted to answer but the smell of watermelon keeps distracting him.
“As I said before, my name is Ben and I’m going to be your waiter for today, what can I get the both of you?” Ben interrupted because he could clearly see the guy was checking him out, and he was not bad himself.
“I’m going to have coffee with a blueberry muffins, and I think Cathy will have a rooibos tea with two blueberry muffins, thank you” Eddie finally found his voice putting his work face on.
“Is that all?” smiled Ben polite not once taking his eyes off of the young guy, and this time Eddie had the courage to stare back, with a blank face, and Ben frowned for some reason seeing him with a blank face didn’t sit well with him, and he wanted to see that guy with pink cheeks again.
“That will be all for now!” said Eddie even though he wanted more than just coffee now!
