Chapter 3: Not So Good Sunday (3) *** “Oh… It’s you again…” Ashton had a distinct expression of disappointment at his friend’s arrival in his apartment. “Yeah, I’m glad to see you too Ash. I forgot my phone when I was here earlier today. Can you call me so I can find it?” Elizabeth said as she looked around searching for where she might have left it. “Sure…” Ashton sighed and took out his own phone to call his friend. “What’s the matter with you? You look even worse than when I saw you today.” Elizabeth said as she began hearing her ringtone somewhere in the apartment, she continued looking. “I’m having a bad day alright, take your phone and leave if you will.” Ashton said as he pointed to the direction he heard the sound coming from. Elizabeth quickly went to the kitchen and found her phone on the counter where she had left it. “Hm… You seem like you have something really troubling you. Is it about rehab?” She asked, thinking her friend had finally gained some sense in him. “Not even close…” Ashton said, “Edward doesn’t want to take over my company.” He continued. “Did he tell you why?” Elizabeth asked as she put her phone back in her purse. “Something about me not being happy if I go through with it.” Ashton said as he turned his wheelchair and moved towards the woman. Unlike the argument both of them had in the morning, now they were speaking calmly with each other with no issue. “Honestly I can’t help but think the same…” Elizabeth admitted. “Why are you so insistent on leaving the company to him anyways?” She asked. “Not you too…” Ashton was already feeling like nobody understood his intentions. “The company is a good thing to have, it can sustain itself because of the workforce and if Edward can just learn the basics this could turn into his future career.” He explained. “So you’re worried about him is that it?” Elizabeth asked with a surprised expression. “Of course I am… Edward doesn’t have any ambitions or anything he wants to do. The only reason he began studying in University is because I suggested it to him. I truly fear he has no aspirations for this life.” Ashton said as he turned his wheelchair around, he no longer felt like talking about the topic. “Maybe he hasn’t made up his mind yet, he’s only nineteen years old.” Elizabeth said as she crossed her arms. “Weren’t we that same age and filled with hopes and dreams for the future?” Ashton asked. Instantly the woman’s mind was flooded by memories of when they were in high school and discussing what they wanted to do. “Yeah but… it’s different with everyone Ash.” Elizabeth said with a kind voice. “Even if you’re right… Isn’t it better to have something to fall on?” Ashton asked with a voice filled with emotion, he seemed even a bit sad while saying that. “Yes, that’s true but Edward will certainly make it and if he ever needs help you could always-” Elizabeth was interrupted mid sentence by her friend’s indifferent voice. “What if I’m not around? What if I’m gone and he doesn’t have anyone else to rely on?” Ashton asked with a completely serious expression. “What are you even talking about Ash. You shouldn’t say things like that even as a joke.” Elizabeth said as she went to stand in front of her childhood friend again. “You don’t know what might happen… I just want to leave something for Edward that he can use if he needs it.” Ashton explained, as much as he wanted to keep up a strong appearance, his voice cracked under the pressure. He was obviously thinking hard about the subject. “You know Ash, you didn’t used to be like that. You’d usually never think about the worst case scenario… How come that’s all you ever think about nowadays?” Elizabeth asked as she looked down at the man sitting in his wheelchair. “It’s because I’m not as young and stupid as I was back then…” Ashton said as he looked away, he didn’t want to make eye contact with the woman. “Ash… Did the therapy do anything at all for you?” Elizabeth had began suspecting therapy wasn’t working too well if her friend was still acting so cynical. “It did something… But I also have to be a realist, if anything were to happen to me don’t you think it’s good for Edward if I left him the company?” Ashton asked, it seemed like even he wasn’t so sure of himself. “I think you should just work in the company with Ethan and leave your brother out of this.” Elizabeth said in a clear voice. “Edward suggested the same thing to me… Do all of you know something that I don’t?” Ashton asked as he looked up at the woman. “If I remember correctly Ethan told me he studied Business management so that he can start his own company someday.” Elizabeth said as she recalled the first time she met Ethan which was more than half a year ago at this point. “He’s said something like that? How come I’m the only one that doesn’t know about it?” Ashton wondered as he wore a truly surprised expression. “You should probably discuss this with him rather than me. I’m just telling you what I know.” Elizabeth said as she headed to the door again. “I’ll leave you to think about it.” She said then walked out the door. “Why is everyone telling me to think more than I already have…” Ashton muttered quietly to himself. He thought he had already figured out what he had to do but it seems like that couldn’t have been any further away from the truth…
