#5 Frozen Heart (Part 2)

Carson finally got Skylar to come out of her shell and try to use her powers. However she was too weak to use them. That was when Carson got an idea. “When you gave Dylon one of your powers, did you feel any different? Like was there a weight that was lifted off your shoulders?”, asked Carson. “Yeah, I know the burden is already over and yet I thought wrong. How could I’ve been so foolish to give this merman powers and expect to get something in return at such a long period of time. I should have stayed in Atlantis as instructed by Clay so that I wouldn’t have to go through all this pain while attempting to transform.” Carson realized that Skylar wouldn’t quite want to go through with his plan so he just told her. “No. You had a choice to make. And you chose the one place you knew best. Why put all that burden on yourself? You are not at fault that we’re in this situation. Even if you wouldn’t be able to go back to the surface ever again, I’ll gladly give up everything to be with you as long as you need.” “I can’t do that to you. Your father also had a choice, he let you enter the human world despite knowing the dangers of a human finding out about your kinds’ existence. He let you live in the human world even after getting you back.”, Skylar protested.  “It’s a choice that I’m willing to make. Even if it means that I wouldn’t get to stay human. I would give up whatever for you.”, said Carson.  Skylar went into defense mode after feeling the presence of a demon. “Get behind me.” Just as the demon-blooded human approached them, both parties were shocked. Poor Tyler had been frozen in an iceberg that Skylar had made with the surrounding water. “Tyler?” She attempted to undo what she had done but apparently the merman- iceberg had already floated up to the surface. Lucky for them, they were nowhere near civilization so Skylar swam up to the surface to help Tyler out of the iceberg.  He was holding the potion that Damon had given them in one hand and in the other was a set of instructions on how to use it. However, she had to get Tyler out of the iceberg first. She never expected him to come swimming towards them at such a high speed.  They had to act quickly before Tyler's body temperature dropped beyond the original body temperature. However Skylar had some problems controlling her powers so she had to focus. She focused her powers on melting the iceberg but it just made it worse and the iceberg grew. She told herself that she could do this, she had saved the ocean from mass destruction and this was nothing. She closed her eyes and focused her powers on one and she slowly opened them and blasted a load of magic on the iceberg. She saw before her eyes the iceberg shattering like glass. Quickly, Carson took her hand and pulled her underwater before any of the glass-like ice hit her.  Tyler fell into the water and began to sink to the bottom. The cold had affected him so they swam to him and brought him to the surface. Once on the surface, he took a deep breath. He looked over at Skylar who was still a mermaid. Skylar was filled with apologies for blasting her powers at him. Tyler, who still saw surpassing the innocence that Skylar possessed, “You know you gotta be careful next time. I wonder what would happen if this were to happen in school. I think the school would go up in flames.”He continued to wrap the towel over his chest. “Dude, don’t be so harsh on her. She’s still learning to control her powers.” Carson wrapped his arms around Skylar’s shoulders. “Give her a chance. She would find a way. I mean like you already got the potion to turn her human again. So why not give it a shot.” “Don’t you get it, Carson. She has to find a way to control godly powers which are really hard to contain in the human world. Even with my extensive research, she can’t be saved. Even if I gave her this potion right now, she still has these powers that are impossible to control. She would just so easily set the school on fire with just a slight touch. Why do you think that it would be otherwise?” “Because I know Skylar, she wouldn’t hurt a fly. She wouldn’t do any of those things.”, Carson protested but it was too late. They heard a splash and Skylar was gone with the waves. “See what you’ve done. I thought you should’ve known better not to provoke a mermaid with anger issues.” “You said it yourself, lover boy.” Tyler made fun of him before he jumped into the waters to chase Skylar.  Carson tried to follow the trail of bubbles but apparently was led astray. As the bubbles lead to nowhere, he paused to think if he were Skylar where would he go? It was apparently harder since he had been having the same worries as Tyler and was worried that he too would cause Skylar to swim away but this time it would have been further away. He knew that Skylar wasn’t really herself when she blasted Tyler with her powers but was it the reason why Tyler had also become something he wasn’t? It was apparent that Tyler was fine this morning when they were planning everything. There had to be something that had caused him to have turned away. Just as he thought about it, he felt another merperson’s presence. He turned to his right and there floated a familiar face that showed a smile. It was Cody, “You didn’t think that I would let you go alone, did you? - Look, I apologize on behalf of Tyler. I don’t know what’s gotten to him.” “You needn’t apologize for him. I think Skylar’s powers may have affected his mood. He isn’t himself at the moment. - So if you were her, where would you have gone?” Carson asked without any hesitation. “Have you tried searching the trove that we created? She could be there-” Before Cody could finish what he had to say, Carson swam off. “Hey, wait up...” They got to the cove and tried to search for Skylar, “She couldn’t have gotten far.” They looked up and down for her but to no avail, she was nowhere to be found. The two of them stopped to listen and they heard sobs so they went to the source of the sobbing. They got to a rock which was crying.  “Skylar?”, Cody said softly. “I know it's hard to be what you used to be but I’ve been there too. So can you please come out. We know you are there. You can’t stay here forever.” Just as he said that, the rock transformed into Skylar. The two of them floated there looking at her in shock. The two merman’s jaws remained hung open. Cody was the first to snap back to reality. “Wait, you can shapeshift?” “It’s something new but it’s the only one that I can manage to control so far. - What do you want? Did Tyler send the two of you to continue to discriminate against me some more?” Skylar floated with her arms crossed over her chest.  Before she could exclaim anymore, Cody stopped her. “On the contrary, we are here to bring you home. I..We think that there has been a mishap that occurred when you blasted Tyler with your powers, your powers might have affected him somehow-” “And we believe that you are the only one who can reverse this mess.”, Carson cut in.  “Why should I trust you huh? The two of you knew Tyler longer than I had ever known him. He was the one who insisted that I remained in the ocean just because I am a danger to humanity.” Before her tears could even roll out of her eyes, it was washed off by the surrounding water.  Cody took her hand, “You know it yourself that the ocean isn’t your home. Come back with us. - Remember that time that I was trying to prove that I wasn’t dating Sapphire and the post was indeed not mine. Tyler did everything in his power to try to bring you back so it’s my turn to prove that he isn’t himself and that it is all just a mishap of your powers.” Skylar remained silent for a bit to think. “Alright, I’ll return with you but it’s your funeral and I’m not intending to put flowers in your coffin.” She teased before rushing to the surface. Alison stomped off with a frown on her face as Tyler tried to confront her that it wasn’t his fault that her so-called, ‘Psycho friend’ swam off after saving him. “How could you? She could have let you die alone but she didn’t, she saved you and the way you repay her is through making her run off. I can’t even believe that you would do that to your own sister. She was there for you when you were at your lowest point.” Before Alison could say anything else, Tyler cut in, “You know how much a danger she is to us, she blasted me with her powers and I could have died.” “So it’s all about you huh? Just because of your little brush with death that you are now against all that your sister stood for? I can’t even believe that you would do this to her. All that talk about being that shoulder for her to cry on, it was all a lie wasn’t it?” She continued hitting him in the chest because he was blocking her way to her room.  Tyler was stunned as he didn’t expect any of that. “Did you get your memories back?” “What do you think, dumbass? I remembered the old you and I wonder if you even remember who you were before you became this snobbish person that you are  now.” She continued to run off after seeing Tyler start to break down. As she ran off, she bumped into Cody who was on his way to check up on Tyler. She tried to hide the tears but it was still visible.  Cody noticed that she was down so he tried pulling her aside to talk. “Are you alright? Did Tyler say something to-” “No. It’s just that he isn’t the person who I fell in love with. He is more snobbish than I remembered.” Cody was shocked that she remembered who he was but he just remained quiet to allow her to continue to talk. “I don’t even know how to have an ordinary conversation with him.” “I understand your pain, Alison. But for now, all I need you to do is try to talk some sense into him. You apparently know him better than I do now so you have a better chance of getting him back to who he was.” Before she could reply, Carson came in with Skylar in his arms; still a mermaid. Shocked to see her, Alison quickly wiped the tears off her eyes and ran up to them. “Oh my gosh, Skylar, are you alright? I heard about what happened. I am so sorry for not being there for you.” She struggled to keep up with Carson as he carried Skylar up to her bathroom.  “Did you happen to see a test tube that Tyler had brought back? We need it as soon as possible or Skylar can’t transform back.” Cody asked Alison before he ran off to assist Carson with drawing Skylar’s bath water.  Alison was left there, frozen in place as she didn’t know what to do. She thought of going back to Tyler to ask him about the test tube of the elixir but she was reluctant to talk to him but she apparently didn’t have much of a choice. She marched up to Tyler to try to talk some sense into him. Apparently she wasn’t the only one who was reluctant to talk. Tyler had a frown plastered over his face.  “Hey, can we talk?” Alison was the first to kill the silence that filled the room. She knew that it would be harder to talk to him but there wasn’t any choice. Additionally, it was also her fault that Tyler was in a mood. She looked at Tyler but he looked away immediately. “We can’t just not talk about this. I know that you are in there Tyler. I just want to talk.” “What about?” were the only words that came out of him as he still had his arms crossed over his chest.  “Remember that test tube of whatever solution that you were supposed to bring to Skylar? I...We need it. Skylar is back but she still can’t transform back. It is only a matter of time that she can be on land right now. Without the elixir that Damon gave you, we can’t turn her back.” Before she could continue, Tyler just shoved the vile with the elixir together with the instructions.  “Now leave me alone.” Tyler went back to sulking about his life. As Alison left the room, she had a sixth sense that she should come back immediately after checking up on Skylar. She quickly ran off to Skylar’s room which was just down the hall. She quickly gave the vile to the guys together with the instructions. Without any hesitations, they quickly poured the whole vial of elixir into the bathtub and soon Skylar felt better than ever. It was like a heavy load was lifted off her shoulders.  “Skylar? How do you feel?”, asked Alison. The guys were also anxiously waiting for a reply, just to be sure that the elixir worked and her voice hadn’t been taken away from her.  “Yes, I feel so much better now.” Skylar continued to try to get out. As expected the guys were still a little overprotective that they helped her up from each side.  “Take it slow.” Carson said into her right ear. “You have all the time you want to walk. You still need time to adjust.” Alison saw that they had no problem whatsoever so she accused herself so that the guys could talk to her. It was like Skylar was now so famous just because she had a near to death experience and they were more concerned about her well-being.  Slowly she transformed back to her human form but the moment she set foot on the ground, her feet were so cramped that she couldn’t stand on her own two feet. She stumbled and fell but before she could hit the ground, Cody caught hold of her. “I think you shouldn’t be rushing to walk just yet. I’ll help you call in sick for tomorrow. You need time to regain your strength.” He continued to set her down on the wooden chair in her bathroom.  Nick apparently didn’t have much of a choice when it came to handling Damon. The only thing keeping their conversation going, were the drinks which Damon was consuming in excess. “I must say Nick. You and your cousin sure do have a certain taste in some sorts of drinks. So you’re telling me that your family has a factory for producing rum?” Damon was so drunk to the point that he just laughed at everything that Nick was saying. He was obviously not thinking straight. “Not my family per se. It was actually opened by my grandfather but it was passed down to the oldest of all of his children which wasn’t my mom. However, there was a long squabble between my uncle and my mom before she finally gave up to focus on family.” Nick wasn’t sure how long he could keep up this charade before anything bad was to happen. He saw it as an opportunity to ask Damon about his younger brother that he never knew he had. “So what else can you tell me about Noah?” Damon let out a laugh before answering his question, “It’s just funny thinking about it that Noah has a brother who apparently is always overshadowed by his popularity. I’m not sure if you would want to hear this. His brother apparently always had a soft spot for a girl you know.” “Who?” Nick gave it a thought but he couldn’t quite think of who this pathetic little brother of Noah would be head over heels for.  He was still laughing which was starting to annoy Nick. But the moment that Damon looked over to Nick whose face had become serious, he said, “Oh you were being serious. - Skylar...duh. Weren’t you one of the victims of her charms?”  Nick kept quiet thinking about plans to get both of them to come to Crystal Cove. Due to restrictions, in courtesy of Lucifer, he knew the Frost too well that they might be tracking his every move so going to New York was not one of the choices. He could always manipulate the school principal in Skylar’s old school to send the brothers over as exchange students. Knowing his own lineage that there was no stopping a Frost from any opportunity thrown at them. He knew that talking to Damon about this sort of thing was pathetic because he was too drunk to think. So Nick pardoned himself from Damon’s celebratory party. Nick looked at his watch and said, “Wow, look at the time. I’d best be going. Thanks for all the information. But I need to be somewhere right now.” He continued to step out of Damon’s apartment to head somewhere he could think. He needed to process all the information that Damon had given him and think of a way to lure Jackson and Noah over to Crystal Cove. He had many different plans but only one of them would be of use.
