“Then go to sleep as I am going to do,” Minella answered, “and when we wake up it will be morning.”
Elspeth gave a little sigh of satisfaction, as if that was what she wanted to hear.
As Minella blew out the candles, she saw that the child’s eyes were closed.
She just had time to murmur a few prayers before she too fell fast asleep.

It was half an hour later that the Earl opened the door of his bedroom that communicated with the boudoir which lay between his room and Minella’s.
There was only a lit candelabrum on the table in the boudoir and just two candles on the mantelshelf, but they revealed an exquisitely furnished sitting room filled with a profusion of hothouse flowers.
However the Earl passed quickly through it to open the door into Minella’s bedroom.
