"If we take the highway there will be fewer houses, less chance of running into people," Spence said as they trudged along. They watched the buildings on the sides of the street warily. At times it felt like they were being watched. Like there was movement in the windows, shadows in the bushes. A dog barked at them, but kept its distance. They saw no other life apart from small birds on the powerlines. Daniel thought they could walk at least twenty miles in a day, but he had seriously over estimated their strength and their stamina. They had to stop frequently to rest, and by the time they reached the first exit, even Daniel was feeling weak and dizzy. His sockless feet were blistering inside his old, worn shoes.
