In their zombie apocalypse nightmare, whether you were a lone ranger or a small group, the shadow of death always loomed large. Zombies were everywhere.
Wake up, Andy. Life is like a performance without a rehearsal. On this doomsday stage, you could die any minute!
Cry... Cry it out. Humans cannot always suppress their emotions. If you don’t let it out, it will eventually become a problem and drive you crazy.
Eric patted Andy on the shoulder. “Andy! This is the end of the world. We are trying to survive, and everyone else is no exception. Frankly speaking, I am not a moral person anymore, because the last two days have taught me that morality is a hindrance.”
His voice suddenly became severe. “One shall stand, one shall fall! This applies not only to zombies, but also to any human beings who threaten our lives! There are no rules now; it’s survival of the fittest! If that guy hadn’t had attacked us, I wouldn’t have made a move.”
Eric’s tone was getting fiercer. “Such a greedy bastard! The three of us couldn’t eat all those supplies if we tried, but he wanted to kill us and monopolize them. That’s greed, true greed!”
Humans, the most intelligent species on the planet, spent less than ten thousand years becoming the king of all things on earth. However, they had been greedy, taking resources and polluting the earth without limits. Perhaps the U-Virus was some kind of cosmic punishment?
“Eric... I... I just want to go back to working on my computer every day. Even if I didn’t get paid, as long as I could leave this zombie world, I would be happy...” Andy whispered, as he wiped his tears away.
Eric went to his bed and sat down heavily. “Stop daydreaming, Andy! To live a peaceful life, we must unite. We won’t be eaten by zombies or killed by others. You won’t be able to live a happy life until you face reality.”
“Look, if you’re hungry, let’s eat something. Can you cook?” Eric asked, using the dagger to open a 10 kg bag of rice.
Andy looked up. “You know, I don’t go out very much, yet all I know how to make is fried rice...”
“That’s fine. You cook that while I tidy and maintain the weapons.”
Now that they were indoors, they didn’t need to eat only instant noodles. Convenience food was for emergencies. If they ended up in the wild, instant noodles and cereal bars could be very useful.
What there was no substitute for was salt. Eric, who had lived in the wild, knew this well. Too little salt in one’s diet for an extended period weakens the body. Nowadays, it was also rather useful; salt was portable and could be used to barter.
Of course, there was no such thing as equality when the world is ending. If your opponent had a machine gun while you were unarmed, the resources in your hands would actually hasten your death.
The idea of setting up a survivors’ group came to Eric’s mind. Although he felt it was unrealistic now, the strength of an individual was too weak. In the face of swarms of zombies, even if you were Superman, you couldn’t kill all of them yourself.
Whether it was his fighting with a zombie dog, or his killing someone today, he might not have survived without Andy. What’s more, human beings are social animals. Even if a person could survive, for example by hiding himself in a cave, it was estimated that he would not be able to speak within half a year, and a year later he would go mad, without peers to communicate with.
After all, he and Andy had always been colleagues, having joined the company at the same time, so they knew each other pretty well. Hence, when faced with danger, Andy automatically obeyed Eric’s command and they overcame difficulties together one by one. But what if someone new joined them?
As long as they could provide stable food and a secure life, he believed that the team would gradually grow. The current duo was just a pair of clerks from a normal company. There was no telling whom they might meet in the future.
It was the worst of times, but it was also a challenging! In doomsday, danger and opportunity coexisted. Eric was just a passer-by before, but now, who knew what would happen to him in the uncertain future?
