Later that evening, I fed and sweet-talked the horses while brushing them down. Possum, my favorite, liked to chew on my shirt because I sometimes kept treats in the pockets. “Not tonight, sweetie.” I murmured as I moved away to close the latch to his stall. “Daddy needs to stop spoiling you rotten, huh?” Possum shook his head and snorted as if to say, “Too late.” I smiled and finished my tasks before heading back outside. The sun had almost set and the evening breeze was cool on my face. I could hear music playing at the ranch house in the distance, but it was muted. I moved to lean over a part of the fence surrounding the paddock and ran a hand through my hair. It was getting to be a little longer than I liked. Maybe I’d cut it next week.
