15 year old James lost his virginity to the most popular girl in his school. Lucy had been amazing in bed, eager to please and highly sensitive to his touches. He was her first too and she responded to him passionately.
Together they explored each other’s bodies and became inseparable, meeting both at school and out of school.
One morning when he returned home after a particularly steamy session with Lucy, he found Sarena chatting with his mum in the kitchen. A vegemite sandwich lay in front of her as she took sips from a mug which James was sure, had tea.
“Looks like you are too busy to practice nowadays,” said Sarena with a scowl.
“Good morning to you too my very old mentor,” said James playfully. Nothing could dampen his spirits after such a satisfying session of release. Lucy kept patting his trouser snake and he didn’t mind cumming inside her ham wallet over and over.
Sarena narrowed her eyes at him, “Now if you are back on earth from your land of dirty thoughts, what day is it?”
He looked sheepish, “it’s Sunday. Sorry, I forgot about yesterday.”
“FORGOT??” She stood up pushing her breakfast away.
Eva looked at her aunt and knew James was going to get a piece of her mind. “You bloody forgot! What else did you forget? Did you forget that your grandparents were ruthlessly killed along with all those innocent witches? Entire families including children and pregnant women wiped out. Anyone connected to some witch or the other, decimated! Did you forget that your mum almost died giving birth to you at home, trying to keep herself and John safe?” She stood shaking and breathing heavily.
James looked down. He had not missed practise intentionally. Sarena herself had been happily singing his praise when he had managed to create a space portal, last week. He was just a human and he needed the break. His body needed his sweet and sexy Lucy.
“Look, you are a grown-up. I get that your willy needs to root. But we have bigger fish to fry. I don’t mind you having a naughty, but I will not have you muck around with our sessions.”
“Sorry, Sarena,” he said, shuffling his feet uneasily.
“Come with me. I am going to show you something that will help you knuckle down.”
She took him to the attic. The only other time he would come to this part of his house was when he needed Christmas decorations, every year.
In one corner of the attic, where the sloping roof met the floor and the light from the storm windows did not reach, space was cleared off. It had a wicker table with a glass top and 2 chairs were arranged around it. Interestingly, he did not recollect this from his last visit. It must be Sarena’s doing. He felt annoyed that she had pulled the wool over his eyes. She had made him believe that he had been naughty and this was some kind of punishment.
She gestured him to sit, waved her hand in the air and mumbled some chants. A milky white crystal orb appeared within her palms. He rolled his eyes, she loved her drama! She picked up a stand from one of the shelves lined along the sloping roof and placed the orb on it, reverently.
She looked piercingly at the orb and again mumbled. The orb turned translucent and he started to see some shadows move inside it. If he didn’t know how to read the signs in nature he would have completely missed it.
A huge wolf jumped on a young woman. She fell down. The animal towered over her and using the claws of his front paw, slashed her forehead. The woman started bleeding. The wolf licked her forehead and the woman passed out or died. He couldn’t figure as the images in the orb weren’t very clear.
The scene dissolved and another scene came up. There was fire everywhere. A huge inferno burning down tall trees. He saw children in a small clearing amongst the burning trees. The images were growing clearer and he could even make out the faces of the frightened kids. He saw wolves surrounding the area. Surprisingly, they weren’t bothered by the flames. Some of them even stood in the flames without the fire affecting them one bit. A couple of burning trees fell on the kids and exploded. A yellow jacket firie was trying to save one of the kids when a burning branch landed on him.
He saw a thatched hut set on fire. Women running out of the hut trying to save themselves were mercilessly killed by the wolves.
“The orb doesn’t lie and it cannot show the entire picture. It can’t tell you if it is the past, the present or the future, but it communicates in its own way. It is a magical artefact created by the most powerful witches and only the strongest are able to understand it’s complete meaning.” She sighed, “That fateful day when we lost more than half the population of witches, I was up in Queensland. I was meditating with my friend on Mount Maroon when it showed me these scenes. These are only ghosts from our memories which I wanted you to see”
He looked at her with horror in his eyes. The death, the burning, the kids… All of it wrecked his heart.
She continued, “the first scene showed your grandma Rianna, my sister. She was soon going to head the Australian chapter of The Order. I have no idea what happened to her.”
“Did she die?” he asked, shuddering as he realised the woman in the orb was his mom’s mother.
“My guess is as good as yours. This orb could show only as much as you saw. Although I did find out later that she saved dozens of people before this werewolf attacked her. Apparently, it was the great Waru himself” She became quiet, clearly thinking of something grave.
James waited. Since childhood, he had learnt to be patient during his learning sessions.
After what seemed like ages, Sarena said, “the man trying to save the children from burning was your grandfather, Eva’s dad. William was Rihanna’s soulmate. Rianna must have felt his death. But I don’t know. The hut was one of the delivery huts. Must have had a few women in various stages of delivery there, who couldn’t run away from their deaths.” Her face distorted in pain and anger.
“Thankfully your mum survived this bloodbath and was found by Maria, your dad’s mom. Do you know his parents were soulmates too but lived away from each other for most of their lives due to these wretched werewolves?”
His eyes went cold thinking about all the c*****e and loss. He balled his fists trying to rein in his emotions. His cell phone chimed in his pocket with a message and pulled him out of his thoughts. Sarena raised an eyebrow.
Lucy
He quickly typed in a short message
His phone chimed again but he did not check his messages. He knew it would be from Lucy. She would want to chat with him but he did not have the time or the mood for that now.
Sarena looked smug. He avoided looking into her eyes, “I know who your girlfriend is.”
He looked at her. Obviously, she would know; she seemed to know everything. With her immense knowledge of witchcraft, he would be damned if she didn’t. Why didn’t he think of that before missing his Saturday session?
He looked at her sheepishly, “I am sorry Nana.” She had always insisted on him calling her Nana. She felt a connection to Rianna through him. He rubbed the back of his neck, “I will be more careful in future.”
She replied, “enjoy your youth, but don’t forget your art. It will be the only constant in your life until you find your soulmate.”
“I don’t want my soulmate. With all that you have told me about them, they appear to be the cause behind all your suffering.”
“They are your better half, chosen by the Moon God himself. Your spiritual partner whose soul is connected to yours. A witch cannot realise their complete potential unless they find their soulmates. They are the end of all your sufferings son. Let's bury the hatchet.” She looked straight into his eyes, “I need to leave now. We will meet next week.”
Since the day he had saved Ira, his training had gone to a whole new level. She would meet him every Saturday, as she trained him, giving him a vacation only in the month of June and December. For her, the 2 solstices were the biggest events in her life and she made sure that those 2 months she took time out for herself.
In the next few months, Sarena told him all about soulmates and their bonds. It takes a long time for a witch’s soul to reach its original strength after they lose their soulmates, yet Rianna had fought for the lives of others even after her loss. He felt proud and was in awe of his grandma.
He also discovered how Waru believed that his mate was killed by a witch. For werewolves, their mates are what soulmates are for the witches. It is that one person chosen by the moon goddess who completes them and complements them. Adaliya was the calming presence in the life of an otherwise aggressive Waru. With her death he lost his marbles and wreaked havoc, killing indiscriminately. Even today, if he got news of a witch, his wolves would promptly seek them out and kill them.
It isn’t easy to kill a witch. Their power of magic resides in their forehead, just above their breath. Scoring in the right spot would injure a specific set of nerves and blood vessels causing the connection of magic and spirit to break. A s***h on the forehead if done correctly, would take away a witch’s power to do magic and make them vulnerable. Waru’s wolves were trained in using their claws to this effect.
His sessions started getting more and more specialised with him training to use his mind to read others. He even learnt the art of persuasion where he could gain access to others thoughts and control their mind. By far this was the most difficult bit of magic. If things went wrong, the witch could get stuck in the other person’s mind forever.
Sarena gave him more and more knowledge of their history and the atrocities committed against them. Whenever his teenage mind reflected on these sessions, his body radiated anger and indignation about the loss suffered by innocent people.
He became more and more engrossed in his sessions and started practising all by himself during the weekdays. He loved the power that came with being a witch.
He also realised he loved locking his thoughts and memories in the frames of photos and videos. He had a special eye for angles and filters. His artistic capabilities allowed him to freely express himself through this medium. So along with witchcraft, he also started working on realising his career goals.
He completed his Bachelor of Film and Television from Swinburne University. His exceptional skills helped him get a grant from the Australia Research Council to make a documentary on the musicians of the Boomerang Festival. This helped him get a role as an assistant professor in the same university and by the time he was 28, he was already a full-time professor.
He enjoyed mentoring students and loved making films that spoke about forgotten people and their issues.
His relationship with Lucy had lasted only a few months. She had found another man to please her, effectively ending it. With time, Sarena demanded more commitment from him towards his witchcraft training.
For the next 8 years, he had very little time and patience for a relationship. He did hook up with random girls sometimes, but he needed more than a bonza sheila, even if it was just a fling. He needed intellect and sass in his partner for enjoying her company.
He kept himself busy with the different assignments from Sarena who was officially appointed as his mentor by the Keeper of the Orb. He was also pursuing his passion for filmmaking as he went through college.
Once he was declared a witch by The Keeper of the Orb, his sessions with Sarena had stopped. They still spoke over phone calls. At 23, he had accepted to be an Amenable, he had to now abide by the rules laid down by The Order. He did not mind it. The rules were simple. It asked the witches to live and let live. They could work with the humans till the time they did not use their magic for their advantage and if they were to murder anyone, they would be taken into the prison for the witches built on a deserted island for rectification.
His entire family had celebrated in happiness and Sarena had passed on the Orb to him saying, “this family heirloom is yours to use.”
As he took the orb in his hands it had vibrated and glowed and then gone silent. Sarena had explained the incantation needed to communicate with it. Over the next few years, he built a special friend bond with the Orb. He called it his buddy.

In the 1st week of Jan 2018
James sat in his living room one evening, watching Stranger Things on Netflix and sipping his beer when he felt a change in the air around him and then heard a loud blast in the kitchen. Without batting an eyelid he said, “That was one of your worst appearances. You are losing your competence, my very old mentor.”
Sarena walked from the kitchen to his living room and chuckled, “I see, you haven’t lost your competence!”
He got up and gave her a bear hug. She somehow looked tinier. Either he had grown or she had shrunk.
She roared, “Boy, when are you going to stop growing. I am reaching only your chest now! What, are you 7 feet already?”
He laughed at her exaggeration, “Obviously not! I am not a werewolf. I am only 6 feet 2, Nana. Stop teasing me.” He gestured for her to sit next to him on the couch. “Why don’t you rest while I get you a cuppa.”
“I want a whiskey today.”
He raised his eyebrows in surprise and walked over to his bar. After handing over her drink he waited for her to take the first sip, “what is this about? You never drink whiskey unless it is something that is disturbing you.”
She savoured the sip and replied, “you need to go to Myponga as soon as possible. I have a feeling that it is time for you to realise your destiny.”
“I can’t just leave,” he said sitting down next to her and picking up his beer.
“Yes, you can. If it is for your University work. Just do a project or a film on the wildlife there. Please!” she said.
“Ok”
They spent the evening in silence watching Netflix. Each consumed by their own thoughts.
