David's POV:
I walked into my high school gym at Northridge High North Dakota, the gym was not my favorite place, and wrestling was definitely not my favorite activity. I mostly did it because I missed the hell out of my dad, and for some stupid reason I felt more connected to him when wrestling for school. My dad was state champ 3 times in a row. I probably would never be able to fill his shoes, but wrestling makes me feel more connected to him and, right now, I need that connection.
As I looked up into the stands, I saw the other freak of the school. It’s always been the 2 of us, the outcast and me, the loser. I have never spoken to her, but that’s because she never spoke to anybody, she just walked around with that hoodie over her head. All you could see of her face was that she had dark brown hair. Other than that, I had no idea what she looked like, always walking with her head down. Luckily for her, she wasn’t at school that much. I only saw her once or maybe twice a week. Which meant that most of the time, all the bully’s attention was focused on me.
I looked up and saw Alex and his gang of bullies. I only wished that my sister could open her eyes and see what a d**k Alex really was. The way he walks around acting like the whole school belongs to him. Well, it kind of did, seeing that he got away with murder.
I heard Alex walk over before I saw him. “Omg Davey you actually f*****g came, Jesus, you’re such a f*****g loser and what the f**k are you wearing, why would you even still try and compete in wrestling. I hope you qualify for the state. comp today, so that I can beat you again next week in the state, like I have for the last 3 years. f*****g pathetic, but I do give you props, the fact that you just take humiliation so well, but of cause you are used to that feeling”. Alex always made me feel like a piece of s**t, but he was my sister's boyfriend, so from my side I always tried to make an effort. He didn't feel the same, he would look for ways to humiliate me, especially when he was with his friends.
I can see out of the corner of my eye that my sister is walking over to Alex. They have been dating for the last 3 years. Wrestling wasn't really my thing and the competition in our school wasn't really that fierce, it was only me and Alex in our weight class, and I only needed a couple more points to go to state. I was only doing this to make my dad proud. I couldn't do it in life, so I can just as well try now that he's dead. I'm more of a nerd, I scored very high in all my exams especially math and science. I'm 5 foot 7 with dark brown hair and blue eyes. A little overweight and that's why I have to fight in Alex's weight class. The only reason I get invited to parties is because of my twin sister, who happens to date the wrestling champ, and the football quarterback, of cause he is also over 6 feet and built like a F250. My sister is very beautiful with strawberry blond hair and dark blue eyes. We are very close except I'm like a reject and she is practically perfect.
My sister walked over to me after she wished Alex good luck. “Hey bro, you’re not wrestling Alex today so at least you can get to the finals. “Omg Isla, who's side are you on”. “David I'm sorry but this is not you, I hate seeing you make a fool of yourself. I love you David, you don’t need to prove yourself to anybody, especially these people”.
“You mean you're people”. Please just be careful. I hate when you get hurt. If you feel like you have to do it, just be careful. Why don't you come with me to the party tonight? It's at Alex's parents’ lake house”.
“Jesus, no Isla, that place is way too far, it takes over an hour to drive there and I don't feel like going, plus he's going to be there.”
“Shut-up David, your coming, asshole, cause you’re driving me. I promise it'll be fun"
After the meet, I walked home. I managed to win, somehow, but that is only because the guy was even worse at wrestling than me. I decided to take a nap and wait for Isla to get home. I'll talk to her then about giving the party a miss.
A couple of hours later I was still feeling like s**t, lying on my bed and thinking of ways to get out of this party. Just thinking about the party gave me hives.
At least I won my qualifying match. Now only state next week and this s**t will be over. I can go back to my schooling and stop feeling so damn guilty about my father. I felt like I disappointed him by not being the son he wanted me to be.
I walked downstairs, I could hear my mom coming in from work. She worked at the local hospital as a nurse. She took on extra shifts after my dad died, but she still made time for me and my sister.
I meet her at the bottom of the stairs and she gave me a quick hug.
She walked straight to the kitchen and started taking food from the fridge.
“You hungry kid, how did the match go”.
“I beat him with my bulk.”
“Come on Dave, your father always said you could be great if you just applied yourself, but you have never had an interest in wrestling. Why don't you just quit? He was proud of you, he honestly didn't care that you weren't a wrestler."
She finished making my sandwich.
"Here I made you a tuna mayo sandwich”.
“Thanks mom.”
“You and Isla got plans tonight.”
“Yeah she wants me to go with her to Alex's party”.
“So go, you deserve it kid, go enjoy yourself, you put so much pressure on yourself. You always work hard in school and next week is the state finals. You deserve a break. Go with your sister, at least I won’t have to worry about her then.
