"Did someone die? Who was it, Baxter, Hans, Midight, Fabiola?"
The list of importance goes like this. If Bax dies I die too, if Hans dies I would consider suicide at least once, if Mid dies I would be depressed forever and if Fabiola dies I would feel sad but only for like three days.
"No, everyone is fine," she assures me and puts a hand on my shoulder, "But you were unresponsive and your friends were worried.
"I was asleep," I excuse myself and push her gently to get up and out of the car. We are still on the road and there are several vans parked. I can't see anyone, "What's going on?"
"Sir, follow me to the ambulance for a simple check up and I'll tell you what's going on," she asks and I agree because I don't know what else to do. She takes me until I'm sitting in the back and starts with her check up while I'm just losing my mind, trying to figure out what's going on and also trying not to throw up from the foul smell coming from my shoulder. My guesses are that I threw up at some point, "Your friends are being interviewed."
"Why?” I need something clearer than that. The last thing I remember is singing on the beach, getting in the car and falling asleep.
"Ah... well, it seems one of your friends saved a family from being attacked by a Rouge wolf," she informs me and I blink many times unable to really comprehend what she's saying. It doesn't make any sense at all. The only thing I can understand is how much my phone is vibrating in my pocket, "It looks like everything is okay, you can go to the others. They were scared because you didn't wake up."
I nod without answering and walk towards where the woman directs me, luckily a few meters ahead I see my friends, before I lose my mind completely. They are all standing awkwardly behind Midnight as she is being filmed by a large camera. There are a bunch of people around them including security, and the person interviewing Mid is a well-known clan reporter.
This still doesn't make any sense at all.
"...That something was going on? It seems rather unrealistic."
"Ah, not so much, it just my luck," Mid mumbles and nervously fixes her hair, looking at the camera, "You guys are already recording?"
"Yes, we've been recording since you came over," the reporter tells her. Mid opens her eyes wide in fear and tries to arrange her hair one more time, "If you could tell us what happened, it would be very helpful."
"Yeah... well, you see, this was my first time driving so I was going very, very slow. Then my friend Hans projectile vomited and it fell all over me."
Hans looks down at the floor. His face is completely red and his shirt is stained just like my shoulder. That little part of the story makes the disgusting stench make more sense.
"Of course I was worried about him so I stopped the car to check if he was okay, that's when I heard something in the distance, like someone crying," she explains and my breathing stops. My phone is vibrating so much that it seems like that's its normal state, but I can't answer it right now, "I didn't even think about it, I told my friend Baxter to come with me..."
Baxter smiles sheepishly and raises a bloodied hand to wave at the camera like a child.
"He told me it was really scary because it was completely dark and we're in the middle of nowhere. He said, 'That's how horror movies start' That seemed like complete nonsense to me because I know that those movies don't make the slightest bit of scientific sense and that whatever was happening had nothing to do with anything paranormal but with an injured person or something like that. I convinced him to go with me and we walked for a while to where the crying was coming from. Then we heard screams.”
"And you weren't afraid at all? That something might happen to you?"
"Not at the time," she answers easily, "Anyway, we walked until we saw a car, as if it had gone off the road. There was a baby crying on the ground on the side of the car with blood staining its clothes and that scared us. It became more than obvious that something pretty serious was going on, I told Bax to stay with him and call an ambulance and security and I walked around for a few more minutes trying to find the person who was screaming, although it was much quieter now."
Mid swallows and starts breathing harder as if she is getting more and more afraid. I think Fiona notices that because she starts rubbing her shoulder to comfort her.
“I kept walking until I found an older couple. It was a man bleeding from his stomach, his mouth was covered and the woman was tied up on the ground. And then I saw a man on top of a girl, trying to calm her down to get her clothes off saying she was his omega and he would take her as it was his right, but he wasn't being aggressive with her even though the girl was completely hysterical. And the guy looked very young. That's why I had the guts to approach him."
No one is moving or asking anything, everyone is paying extreme attention to Mid.
"They're going to kill me," I mutter to myself. They're going to kill me for letting this happen.
"I took a risk and got his attention, making sure to keep my tone low and neutral," she says and my heart stops for a moment, "I told him he was wrong… I told him that girl wasn’t his omega, that I was. I told him Mother Nature told me we were meant to be together, just because I wanted to distract him, of course.”
“That girl is crazy, that's not normal," a security alpha whispers to his partner beside me and his partner nods his head without stopping writing in his little notebook.
"I'm at a loss for words," the reporter mutters, "Why did you do that?"
"Well, the fact that he was young and wasn't being violent with the girl calmed me down a bit. His words about her being his omega made me think he was just in search of a fated connection, real or not, the girl is barely fourteen so she’s not even an omega yet. He just really wanted to think that, so I gave him the fantasy. Besides, the nearest security station is about a mile away, or about twelve minutes in a fast speed. And I had to waste his time somehow," she explains and takes a deep breath. She's completely losing her shït inside. I don't blame her, "The guy was really scared when he saw me and immediately threatened me with a knife in his hands, but I assured him that he had nothing to worry about and that I just wanted to be with him. I said that I loved him.”
A shiver runs down my spine just thinking what could have happened if she had made a mistake about him not being violent.
"At this point, it had been seven minutes and sixteen seconds since I asked Bax to call the police so there wasn't much time left. I told him that we had to be together and then he slowly started to believe me," she continues, swallowing, "He came up to me and hugged me telling me he had been waiting for me his entire life. He didn’t even touch me inappropriately, so it was just uncomfortable. Just when he was trying to kiss me, I heard security approaching and he was shot with a sedative. I'm really glad I was there to help, I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't shown up."
"Wow, so there you have it. An incredible story of heroism and bravery by this amazingly strong young omega. The Tallason family was transported to the hospital and the rouge wolf has been identified as Robert Masew, a 19-year-old alpha, who is now in custody," the reporter says and goes on to give facts that I don't put much attention to. He then thanks Mid and the guys and they finish filming, Mid has to stand around talking to a cop for a while and then approaches.
"What the hell?" is all I can ask. Midnight crashes into my body and starts crying really hard, "What the fück is going on? How is this possible?"
"This is the worst day of my entire life," Midnight cries, "And you wouldn't wake up. I thought something had happened to you."
"Poor thing," Hans murmurs and puts a hand in Mid's hair, "She had a very severe panic attack when security arrived. Fi and I had no idea what was going on."
"I can't believe this," I mutter and start walking to my car, "Let's get the hell out of here."
For the rest of the way, no one talks. I guess everyone is getting over what happened in silence. The car is smeared all over with vomit and stinks a lot worse than before, but no one says anything. And my phone keeps vibrating and vibrating so I dare to answer it.
"WHERE ARE YOU?!" Angie screams the second I answer, completely hysterical, “WHY IS MIDNIGHT IN THE NEWS? WHY DID SHE TELL THAT STORY? WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON!"
I take a breath and brace myself, then tell her what little I know and earn another batch of yelling and scolding, until someone takes Angie's phone away.
"You can't be around Mid anymore, you're a tremendous and useless ïdiot. You were supposed to just go to the beach and that's it, but you let her drive for the first time and put her in danger like that," Lion mumbles, his voice lowered and angrier than it's been in several weeks. The last time he spoke to me like that was when I accidentally stayed in Italy for three full days without answering any calls.
"But... I had nothing to do with it. Mid is the one who decided to play hero," I frown at her, "Scold your daughter if you want, but I'm just the innocent neighbor who was asleep the whole time."
"That makes it worse, dumbass!" He yells, but I'm already pushing the phone towards Mid. She greets Lion in a low voice, "What the fück was that? I thought you were smart."
"I am," she defends herself and her shoulders slump, "I saved a girl from being..."
"I don't care!" Lion yells and his voice carries throughout the car, "You had no business going to investigate like it wasn't dangerous, it's the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my entire life, I can't believe my daughter, someone who has my amazing genes, has so little substance in her brain. It's insulting."
"But I knew he would..."
"No, you don't know anything. You're an ïdiot. And you're grounded forever for being so dumb," he blurts out, as if he knows what he's doing, as if he hasn't only been a father for two weeks. I almost laugh, but Mid's sad little face stops me, "You can't see Grayson anymore, you can't use your phone, and you can't go to the gym."
"You're so mean and rude to me," Mid complains and her voice cracks.
"I don't care," Lion spits and hangs up the call.
"Oh, Mid, don't cry," Fiona begs from behind her and reaches out to stroke her hair. Mid leans into her like she's starved for affection and I can't help but like Fiona a little better. Maybe she's just another omega who's a good for nothing dumb slüt, but at least she seems to genuinely care about Mid, "Dads are mean sometimes, doesn't mean they don't love you. Mine used to hit me all the time, but he loves me anyway."
"That explains a lot," I mutter and Bax snorts a laugh behind me. Fiona narrows her eyes at me and smacks my arm, "It was just a joke, relax. And don't touch me without permission."
"Lionel is going to send me back to my grandmother," Mid whispers making herself small in the seat and her voice cracks at the end, "I don't want to leave."
"He won't do that," I assure her, and take her hand in mine to squeeze it, "Trust me, it's going to be okay."
Mid gives me a smile and nods, trusting me, but only a few minutes after dropping everyone off at their homes, the sun is rising and we arrive at Lion's apartment.
Three equally angry people greet us.
