“Well, if that’s the case. We can go together another day. I’ll see you tomorrow, Cat.”
“Okay. Bye, Linda!”
And there she goes, heading straight to her sweetheart. Man, I sounded like a brokenhearted man watching my girl go to her true love.
Well, I couldn’t help it sometimes I felt lonely because whenever I wanted to spend my time with my best friend, Ricardo always appeared out of nowhere like he could sense I was asking her out. Did he even remember I would be leaving her in a few months? Just let me spend time with her.
“Oh, well.” I couldn’t comment on anything because Cathy was clearly in love with Ricardo and the time she spent with him was so precious to her.
I walked out of the class while feeling the multiple gazes from the boys. I knew I was popular. My looks were the favorites among them. I was confident with my appearance. Honestly, if I tried to register myself to one of the modeling agencies, I would be accepted. I guess. I remembered the first time I met Cathy, she mistakenly thought I was a model because of my height.
Are you a model?
That’s what she asked. She was so cute back there. If I thought about it again, maybe that was one of Cathy’s charm points. Capable of making people around her to be attracted to her. Or maybe because of her eyes. There was something there like a magnet. She was also so kind to everyone.
However, she was so slow. That was her biggest weakness. She couldn’t read a man’s attention when he was flirting with her. The first thing that came into her mind was always he wanted to be friends with her where honestly, their attentions were far away from that. I thought a girl with a very innocent mind like her did not exist anymore. But here she was, my very own best friend.
I was so happy to have her as my best friend. I had a lot of friends but Cathy was the best. I already considered her as my sister. And I wanted her to be happy. And I was glad seeing her with Ricardo and I knew he felt the same way as Cathy’s. I wonder why Ricardo never made a move on her. Because she was too young? Just younger? Or there was something else? Oh, I would kill him if he made her cry.
If I recalled back the stories Cathy told me about Ricardo, he couldn’t be categorized as a playboy because he never hit on them first. But I knew, he had slept with one of them.
There was just no f*****g way Ricardo was still a virgin. Hell to the no.
But no matter what, I would respect Cathy’s feelings for Ricardo. She already made up her mind that she would confess after graduation.
I really hoped Ricardo would say the same to her. Because if not—
“Linda!” someone called me, cutting my thoughts as I looked around. Who the hell? Damn, I didn’t even realize I was already outside of the building. I must be daydreaming too much. Who called me anyway? “Linda!” the voice called again until my eyes caught on the white Mercedes in front. Hey, I knew that car and I walked toward it. The window was opened and I peeked inside. “Hey there.” Seeing the handsome man with his dark blue orbs staring at me.
“Oh, James! Hi!”
“Get in.” I opened the door and got inside. “Did you wait long?”
“Oh, no. I just came down. What about you? Did you wait long?”
“No. I just arrived,” he said while looking toward my back. “Where’s your friend?” Oh, man.
“Ah, I’m so sorry about that. She couldn’t make it. That’s my fault for not telling her anything. She already has her own plan,” I told him.
Actually, I wanted to introduce James to Cathy since it was rare for James to be around town. My dad told me James was visiting so I immediately contacted James and told him about Cathy. James also wanted to meet her. Apparently, the universe hadn’t let them meet.
“That’s all right. Your friend has her own life.” Yep, with Ricardo.
“She’s meeting the man she loves.”
“No wonder,” he stated and drove the car away. “How’s your friend like, Lin? When I heard your explanation from last night, I think I can imagine a bit about this Catherine girl and she is a very nice girl,” he asked.
“Maybe I should say she is too nice and too innocent.”
“You really love her, don’t you?”
“Of course! Best friend for eternity even until we became grandma. I really want to introduce her to you. I know you’re going to like her. Although she already has Ricardo—”
“Ricardo? That’s his name?” Oh, s**t. s**t! s**t! s**t! What the heck had you done, Linda? I shouldn’t slip his name out. Nicely done. Nicely f*****g done.
“Y-Yeah. That’s his name.” I wonder if James knew Ricardo was the son of Jared Williams. Remembering both of them were businessmen, those names should sound familiar to James
“I see.” Oh, that was it? He didn’t ask anything? Thank God. Well, he didn’t know Cathy too so he didn’t have the right to meddle with her private life. Yeah. That must be it. No mistake at all.
“By the way, your parents were asking me again when I will get married soon,” he commented. Oh, my God! Mom. Dad. Seriously?
“Again?”
“Again.”
“I’m so sorry, James. You know sometimes they are always like that. They treat me the same too. Mom wants to see the guy who managed to steal my heart while Dad will be there to interrogate the poor guy.” James laughed. Well, when my parents asked James that, I knew because they had considered him as their own, not just a nephew anymore. Especially when James didn’t have his anymore.
“No problem, Linda. I’m not in a hurry too.” Yeah, because he wasn’t really interested too.
I never told Cathy this because James…was actually an asshole.
He knew his charming point and he used it to his opposite s*x. Even just by him standing quietly, women would get close to him and James never said no to any of them. I knew it was not my business to forbid him. At least he knew what he was doing and he told me he always made it clear that he didn’t do relationships. Just for one night or just for a casual f**k. He would never give his heart to any of them. Because whenever I saw him with those women, every single one of them was the slutty type and was targeting what was behind his pants or what he was saving in his bank.
When I knew Cathy for the first time, I thought she could be the one for James. Until she blurted out that she was in love with her childhood friend.
I couldn’t force her to like James romantically. Unless Ricardo dumped her and that could be my chance. But I was hoping that would never happen. Cathy deserved to be happy and I think her happiness was in Ricardo’s hands.
“Linda?” James called as I looked at him. I was dozing off again.
“Sorry. Oh, I have her picture. Do you want to see?”
“Sure. But wait until the traffic light.” I pulled out my phone and searched for our selfies together. When the car stopped, I showed my phone to James and he took it.
“Cathy is the one with short hair,” I told him.
James set his eyes on my friend’s picture. That was one of my favorite pictures we took together. We were trying this new café near the school. And as I kept looking at my cousin, he was looking at her…seriously. Observing. Like he wanted to remember every inch of her. Wait. He never showed that kind of reaction when I showed him my pictures with my friends.
“Um, Jam—”
“She’s beautiful,” he complimented. “As you said, she looks nice and innocent. Her eyes are gorgeous.” See? Even James said the same despite both of them having the same eyes color. And I was so happy when he was complimenting my best friend. Man, I sounded like a mother feeling proud that my daughter got complimented by a man like James.
He returned the phone to me and started driving again when the light turned green.
“She’s also very popular.”
“Clearly. So, is it okay if I come to your house?”
“Of course! Mom and Dad are so excited to meet you.”
Right after, we both chatted about many things along the way. James also told me his business was running smoothly and I was really proud of him. He already made his parents proud of him.
I prayed he would someone one day. Someone who could make him so in love with her. Someone who could change his world upside down and he would do anything for her.
Because that day, I hadn’t realized that my action by letting him know how Cathy looked like would give all of us a big impact later.
