“What’s the matter Valerie? You look lost in thought.” Brian asked as he observed his employer.

“It’s strange…” Valerie muttered quietly.

“What is?” He asked while tilting his head to the side. ‘I might already have an idea though…’

“They don’t want to take over our business anymore…” Valerie said as she raised her head to look at the man in front of her. “Isn’t it strange? They were so persistent before yet now they don’t want it…”

“Really? I think it’s a good thing then, you won’t have to worry anymore about those assholes.” Brian said with a bright smile on his face. ‘Cause I’ll be the one worrying about them instead.’ He thought to himself but didn’t voice that part.

“They must be planning something… they…” Valeria was still angry, she hated those in higher positions more than anything. In fact she despised them, anyone who had that amount of power or recourses was an awful person, in her opinion.

“Careful boss… you’re releasing your pheromones.” Brian said with a goofy smile on his face as he tapped the woman on the shoulder.

“I’m sorry… Are you dizzy?” Valerie quickly calmed down and apologized.

“I’m good, don’t worry…” Brian sad while moving his hand away from the woman’s shoulder. ‘I’m not a beta, so your pheromones don’t really affect me anyway…’

It’s not like he wanted to keep this secret from his employer, he simply never had a good opportunity to share it with her. And in the end, allowing her to believe he was a Beta was the best option left for him. He wouldn’t be able to work in her bakery otherwise, since she only hired Betas.

“You should still rest for a little bit… Your pheromones are very weak today as well, I can barely sense them…” Valerie said then turned her back to the man and left.

‘She’s always so caring… Well… I better get back to work!’ Brian thought to himself and went to check out how things were going within the store…

It was a rather peaceful day and as per usual there weren’t a lot of clients. At most the bakery has been half full at any given time, but that was enough for Brian to feel content. He enjoyed the work he did even though he received humble pay.

“How’s it going Amy?” Brian asked with a cheerful voice, “Do you need help with anything?”

“Brian! Hello, it’s going great, there aren’t a lot of clients so I’m fine on my own.” Amy replied in an equally cheery voice, she seemed to have feelings for the man as she blushed each time she saw him.

“I’m glad to hear it… So there wasn’t any trouble?” Brian asked after a second of thought. He feared that Barlowe might try to do something else to the bakery. ‘I don’t really trust that guy to stay quiet…’

“It’s alright… Well…” Amy hesitated a bit.

“Hm?” Brian quickly noticed the woman’s hesitation.

“It’s just… um… that Mature Alpha you went out with, who was he?” Amy questioned as she shyly turned to look at the man.

“…..” Brian wasn’t sure what to say. ‘If I tell her it was one of Barlowe’s people… she’s definitely going to tell Valerie. I can’t risk them knowing I spoke with him…’

“Did I say something wrong? I’m sorry if it was a personal thing…” Amy quickly apologized after seeing the man become all silent.

“Yeah, it’s a bit personal…” Brian used this opportunity to play it up a bit. “If it’s okay for you… I hope you won’t mention that man to Valerie either, she’ll only worry…”

“Yes, of course I won’t utter a word!” Amy agreed as she looked at the man, her face was still completely flushed red. “Um… just…”

“What is it?” Brian asked while turning to the woman, he noticed her eyes had began shifting, ‘She’s looking away… Hm… suspicious…’

“Just… he isn’t your boyfriend, right?” Amy asked after hesitating for a while. ‘I said it, I finally said it…’ She thought to herself and blushed even harder.

“No, not at all… I’d never date someone so rude like him.” Brian said while crossing his arms. ‘So that’s what she wanted to ask… How cute…’

“Rude?” Amy wasn’t sure what the other meant.

“I mean… He used his pheromones on someone so lovely like you. Of course I’d have no interest in dating him!” Brian said confidently.

“L-lovely!” Amy’s face reddened even further as she heard that. ‘Lovely, he called me lovely… oh god…’

“Come on, let’s go back to work, more clients are coming in~” Brian said as she gently nudged the girl to go to the counter.

“Y-yes…” Amy continued blushing and smiling like crazy. It was no wonder she would be so happy, she’s liked that man ever since they had began working together.

“What a womanizer…” Valerie muttered to herself and then smiled as she watched the scene unfold.

“Manager? You came out here as well?” Brian asked after seeing his boss standing besides the counter.

“I had to make sure you two don’t slack off.” Valerie said in a gentle voice.

“Haha, of course not… I’m a good worker, you said it yourself!” Brian puffed out his chest in a comical manner.

“Yeah, yeah…” Valerie pulled the man closer to herself and whispered into his ear. “…don’t give her any false hope, you know she likes you.”

“Understood…” Brian smiled helplessly to himself, then turned to look at Amy. ‘I’m sorry… you had to fall in love with someone like me. But given our positions… those damn positions that had been pre-determined the day we were born… Because of that we can’t date each other.’

Brian truly felt sad that he wasn’t able to date anyone he wanted. He had no choice but to only date those equally strong as himself or stronger. Otherwise he would be risking the other getting injured because of the strength of his pheromones.

Pheromones in this universe are not only used for combat but can be used as a medicine or poison… You have the ability to heal pain by using your scent but all the same you could hurt another person, whether you intend to do it or not…

‘I know your feelings… You’re cute and hardworking but I can’t date you… A relationship between me and you would be doomed to fail before it began…’ Brian thought to himself silently then turned to look away from Amy.

A relationship between two completely incompatible people could possibly lead not only to ruin but to the death of the weaker one. Brian couldn’t allow himself to cause another person pain to gain his own selfish happiness.

That is simply the world they are born within…
