Bent Nose put Patch in the corral with Pauley’s sale horses and reluctantly allowed me to nap in the hayloft. Sometime after dark, he woke me. After thanking him for his help, I slipped out of the stable and made my way afoot down the dark streets toward the center of town. Bent Nose hadn’t known where Hardcastle lived or if he had a family, but he’d heard the militia chief liked to frequent the Swinging Door Saloon and the Rainbow House.
