LAYLA’S POV
“You should take Damien to the Pageant, everyone is choosing dates” Isa says out of the blue.
“Yikes no!” I reply almost immediately, my wolf sings in disapproval and it gives me a headache.
“That was a hard no” She looks up from book. We had decided to study together today and it has being peaceful until she said those words.
“I can’t go with Damien” I say with a tone of finality.
“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad and you guys were best friends” She said.
“Are….best friends, it’s just it’s really complicated right now” I run my hand through my hair.
I have to let nature take it’s course, I’m only changing a few decisions about myself and nothing more. This time I’m not going to choose Robert. If I remember correctly, Robert should come apologize for his misdeeds tomorrow. I have to turn him down.
“It’s not going to be that bad, and Damien is…hot” She accentuates her words.
“Isabelle!” I scold
“Just saying. Better take him before anyone else does” She raises her hands in mock surrender.
“Isabelle Cassandra Wellington” I utter in disbelief.
“Look, I have eyes, I have seen the way the guy looks at you. He gets extra protective when he’s around you. He glares at anyone who stares at you for more than two seconds.” She runs her hand through her hair
“And… I’m not supposed to tell you this exactly….but Dylan is in the hospital” She whispers the last part
“What?” I jolt up
“Calm down now, it was just a slight altercation” She explains
“Altercation? Someone’s in the hospital. How badly was hurt then, if his wolf couldn’t heal him” I scramble around my around to grab a sweater.
“And why do you care? You don’t even know what happened” She puts her hand on her waist.
Shit, I already know what happened, but Isa doesn’t know that. The problem now is, Dylan wasn’t supposed to get hurt. Robert was.
“What happened?” I ask
“Dylan called you names in front of Damien to rankle him, And boy…. Did he get rankled” She hoots.
“Exactly, he got hurt because of me” I say
“No he got hurt because he insulted you. Insulted you in front the only man on earth that’ll kill anyone who as much as glares at you” She says as a matter of fact.
“Oh come on, don’t be delusional” I reach for my purse.
“Well, tell that to Dylan’s carcass lying in that bed” She says lightly with a small smile on her face.
“So you’re happy that Dylan got hurt” I raise my voice.
He wasn’t supposed to get hurt, Robert was, then he would be forced to come and apologize to me and then be nice to me for the next couple of years. Not Dylan.
“Oh I am delighted that he got hurt. One, he bullies both of us through High school, we are in our final grade and I am still reeling from the effect. His friend r***d me, and he made fun of it while he tried to do the same with you-“ She rants
“But I handled it!” I yell back.
“And what makes you think he would not try to do it again? Oh you’ve got some confidence now, so you’re some sort of super woman yes?” She c***s her head.
“What does that even mean?!” I shout.
“Look, I’m not about to feel sorry for a douchebag who put my life through hell” She grits.
“What if it was your brother?” I ask and she backs up like she’d been shot.
“Well…” She Whispers “Thanks to all this bullshit and same douchebag you’re defending right now, I don’t have one anyone. Hell, I don’t even have my family anymore” She lets out before she grabs her purse.
“Isa wait…I didn’t mean like-“ I start.
“Thanks for the reminder Layla” She says before she’s out the door.
“s**t”
The bells rings signifying the end of the lesson and I let out a deep sigh.
I shove my journal in my bag and walk out of the class.
I see Isa walk by and we make eye contact. She ignores me and keeps walking and I run to catch with her.
“Isa wait, wait up, at least listen to me” I grab her hand and she yanks it off.
“I’m not interested in having a conversation with you” She says with a stoic face.
“I understand, but just hear-“ I begin but she walks away.
I run my hand through my hair and sigh.
“Trouble in paradise?” A voice scares me from behind.
“Oh s**t! Oh my God Damien, you should not do that!” I hold my chest and let out a shaky breathe.
“Sorry, didn’t mean to scare you. Are…you guys fighting?” He furrows his brows.
“Yeah, it’s been three days of hell without my best friend. Both of them” I c**k my head to side and raise my brows in question.
“I…uh… I’m sorry, I had to handle some things at home” He explains
“And what…things- You know what, doesn’t matter, you wouldn’t tell me anyways, Why did you hurt Dylan?” I cross my arms.
“You weren’t supposed to know about that” He grimaces and scratches the back of his head.
“What is that supposed to mean?” I yell at him.
He leads me out of the hallway into an empty classroom.
“Is..is that why you fought with Isa? Did she tell you about Dylan? Is that why she’s not talking to you? What happened?” He asks.
His proximity became closer and closer with every question and his scent invades my sense. My wolf shives in excitement. I shake my head to get the thoughts out of my head.
“We….I….that wasn’t the question Damien, Why did you hit Dylan?!” I grit.
His sucks in a harsh breathe and his face turns stoic.
“The fool had it coming, he kept saying some crap about you. And I promise I didn’t mean to hit him until he said something about Isa’s r**e case and said something in the lines of doing the same thing to you” He shrugs.
“I can take care of myself Damien!” I yell but his face remains the same. Unwavering.
“It didn’t seem like that when he had you pinned to that locker, almost choking and sucking the life out of you” He moves closer “We both know the only reason you were able to get away was because I distracted him” He says and clenches his jaw.
“Look at me, Melo, you’re my best friend and I would do anything, and I mean anything to protect you” His voice comes out softer this time and I scoff.
“The same best friend you left for four years and came back without an explanation?” I c**k my head.
He opens his mouth to speak but closed it back.
“Yeah, yes Damien, that’s what I thought. And for the record, this is the longest conversation we have had since you got back, and guess what? Still no explanation” I shove him to the side and walk out of the classroom.
