Chapter 14Pacing the floor, Byron tried to keep his emotions under control. Anger would not help Jem and he just knew his precious friend was in trouble.
“The stepmother said her husband—Jem’s father—had been killed in some freak shuttle accident. But he’s legally only presumed dead as yet.”
Byron forced himself to pay attention. The speaker was Johnson Charming, Prinz’s father and Byron wasn’t sure just who, if anyone, he trusted any more. He stopped his pacing and focused on the group.
“She’s told everyone, even Jem, that Maddox is dead.” He stared levelly at Johnson. “So you’re saying she’s lied.”
“You know Jem best, Byron. You tell us what you know.” Herne stood briefly and held up his hands before sitting again.
