Chapter 8

906 Words
Dalton shot a fierce glance at Helen with his hands over his face. "I'll say this one last time: I have no family. This slap is your p*****t for saving me today. Next time, if anyone from the Walker family dares to lay a finger on me, I will make you pay!" Dalton took $2,000 from his bag and slapped it down before her. "I don't owe anyone anything. This is today's medical fee. Take it. From now on, don't let me see you again!" With that, Dalton strode out of the hospital, leaving Helen in shock. She couldn't imagine how much pain must have driven him to speak such harsh words. She had to know what he had been through. Dalton took the bus back to the neighborhood where he had just sold vegetables. Thankfully, his rented van was still parked by the roadside. He breathed a sigh of relief. If it had been lost, all his hard work over the past few days would have gone to waste. He drove the van back to his rental and called David and the others. Everything was going smoothly. The money they had invested had doubled, bringing him great joy. His biggest wish now was to make money and ensure that David and the others could live a good life. Meanwhile, Helen returned home, and the Walker family still seemed calm and unconcerned. When Jack saw Helen come in, he asked, "Why are you the only one back? Where's that brat?" Helen shook her head sadly. "He didn't want to come back with me." Jack's face darkened instantly. "Hmph, what an ungrateful puppy!" "He must have gotten in touch with those worthless friends from the slums! Jack, I told you he is hopeless!" Susan sneered. "Fine! When he comes back, I'll make sure he regrets it!" Jack said angrily. "Forget him for now. Take a look at this outfit. Does it suit Harvey?" Susan said, diverting the conversation away from Dalton. Helen felt a wave of helplessness wash over her. Almost instinctively, she chose not to go upstairs. Instead, she walked back into Dalton's room, the tiny servant's quarters even smaller than Beth's. Helen sat on the chair, trying to imagine what it would be like for Dalton to sit there, but aside from feeling uncomfortable, she couldn't sense any emotion from the cold furniture. She let out a soft sigh and accidentally kicked the trash can under the desk, feeling something inside. She looked down and saw crumpled paper balls and torn pieces of paper. Out of curiosity, she picked up a paper ball, flattened it out, and noticed a date written in the upper right corner. It looked like part of Dalton's diary. Quickly, Helen gathered all the paper balls and arranged them in chronological order. She confirmed it was a diary that Dalton had ripped apart. [I actually have parents! I have a home! I'm going home! David and Ruby will be so jealous of me. I'm not an orphan. My family hasn't abandoned me!] The first entry was filled with Dalton's evident joy. [Oh my goodness! I'm not an orphan, and I even have five sisters and a brother! I'm so happy! I must do everything I can to treat them well!] [My eldest sister, Helen, is so amazing! She's a top student from Harvard University, and I heard that after she took over the company, the annual revenue doubled! Plus, she's so beautiful, just like a swan! When I get close to her, she smells so nice. She's just like the perfect career woman people see on TV! I'm so lucky she's my sister!] As Helen read those words, she suddenly covered her mouth, trying desperately to hold back her emotions. She never imagined that Dalton thought so highly of her. [I went to where Helen works today, and it seems like she doesn't really like me... What should I do?] At that moment, Helen remembered that Dalton had indeed come to the company once. He didn't know her working hours and showed up at the entrance early in the morning, waiting around. The security guard noticed him lurking suspiciously at the door and approached him to shoo him away. Helen witnessed this scene while she was at work. "Ms. Walker, I just caught a guy hanging around our company entrance. He claims to be your brother. I think you should check it out!" The security guard said, pushing Dalton toward Helen, holding him by the arms. When Dalton saw Helen, his face lit up with joy. "Helen, it's me! Tell them I'm your brother!" Seeing Dalton in such a sorry state made Helen feel extremely embarrassed. If she admitted that Dalton was her younger brother, the people at the company would surely laugh at her behind her back. "I don't know him." Helen didn't even glance at Dalton again as she walked straight into the company. She didn't notice the dejected look on Dalton's face. The light of joy in his eyes flickered out the moment she spoke. He stopped struggling and let the security guard drag him to a corner of the building where there were no cameras. There, the guard kicked him a couple of times and spat on him. "What a joke! How dare you pretend to be a Walker, punk!" Helen had always taken pride in her noble character, but now, she felt like a complete villain.
