A painful scream escaped the prisoner's throat as his right ear fell to the floor. Cyrus had changed his mind at the last moment and cut off his ear. Blood sprayed on the wall and dropped to the floor and I watched it in horror, completely frozen, unable to believe what I just witnessed. Why did he have to do that? Guilt washed all over me. If I hadn't signaled for the prisoner to help, maybe he wouldn't have met that fate. Cyrus stood up and left without looking at me.
