Kalli
When I started to come to the only thing I remembered was the pain. I’ve experienced plenty of it in my lifetime but nothing compared to how bad that was. The good thing is it seems to be fading. Now all I can feel is the soothing warmth throughout my body.
Wait, that asshole said the pain would be gone by the time I woke up. What the hell did he do to me? I tried to move but my body felt heavy and I still couldn’t open my eyes. Oh well, maybe instead of fighting I should be savoring whatever moments of peace I have left.
Thankfully I was able to shut off my brain and I imagined myself drifting along in the darkness. This was a meditation technique I had developed whenever my life got too stressful. I would imagine leaving my body behind happily going wherever the wind would take me.
Out of nowhere, I was struck by a bolt of lightning. I felt myself being flung back into my body and every single one of my senses was awakened. Nothing like that has ever happened to me before. Despite how alive I felt my lungs burned in desperate need of air. Gasping for a breath I sat straight up in my bed. Except, I’m not in my bed.
When my vision finally cleared there were two hazel eyes staring back at me. There is a weird tingling feeling in my left arm and I can feel someone’s hand in mine. This is not the man who attacked me but he’s still a stranger and therefore could be a threat.
Without breaking eye contact I made a fist and nailed him right in the jaw. His head turned slightly and he released my hand. When he did I had the strangest feeling. It was like my body missed his touch. I must be going crazy.
The guy I punched had no reaction. He calmly went and stood over to the side and avoided looking directly at me. That was when I noticed the two other people in the room. There was a female with short black hair and dark brown eyes. She was fairly tall and in excellent shape. She definitely carried herself with confidence and honestly, she looked like someone Luccio would set me up to fight against.
The other guy was tall and muscular as well. He had a shaved head and a well trimmed beard. He and the girl had the exact same color eyes except where hers were cold, his were warm and kind.
Then I turned my head to the left and saw him. I knew I shouldn’t have looked but everything about him called out to me. He had dark blonde hair and a matching beard. He was even more muscular than the other guy and his lips were perfectly thick. They had my mind wandering just looking at them. Then I noticed the tattoos, both arms were fully sleeved. I wonder where else he has ink. I bit my bottom lip and continued to eyeball him up and down. This was crazy, I could literally feel my pulse quicken. When my eyes met his again I could swear the hazel color was gone, replaced by almost fully black orbs. That’s when the girl cleared her throat aggressively.
“Where am I?” I snapped at her.
“You’re in a hospital,” the guy to the right of her replied.
“How did I get here?”
“Two of our men found you being attacked. Do you remember anything?” So far this guy was the only one talking to me.
“Yeah, it's kind of hard to forget some random creep attacking you. I mean how psycho do you have to be to bite another person? Maybe if your men hadn’t been so slow they could’ve stopped it before it started.” I moved my hands to my neck to try and see if I could feel the damage. But oddly there was nothing there.
“You have a really funny way of showing appreciation. Normally people would say thank you,” the girl said as she took a step towards me.
“Yeah well, normal people wouldn’t treat a victim with as much hostility as you are right now. What kind of cops are you guys anyway?” I made sure to avoid the blonde guy to my left completely when I spoke.
“We’re private security, not the police. Our men took you to our hospital and our doctor treated you,” said the bald guy. “Did you know the person who did this to you?”
“Not really, I had a brief encounter with him at work tonight.”
“Which strip club do you work at?” The girl asked.
“I’m not a f*****g stripper.” Before I had a chance to finish my sentence the guy handed me back the tips I had made tonight at the bar. “You guys went through my pockets?” I asked while counting it to make sure it was all there. “Not that it matters but I work at the Bad Habit over off St. Louis. It’s a bar, not a strip club.” Normally I would’ve let them think whatever they wanted to about me. But I wanted to make sure the other guy knew I wasn't a stripper. For reasons unknown, his opinion of me mattered.
“Of course we went through your pockets. We were trying to figure out who the hell you were, Kallisto.” The girl handed me back my phone as she said my name, still obviously irritated with me for some reason.
“Fine. So what do you need from me? A statement or something or am I free to go home?” This time I did look over to the guy on my left. He had been silently observing everything this whole time and I was done with the two in front of me.
“Why are you asking me?” Oh my god, even his voice was perfect.
“Because you’re the one in charge,” I said, trying my best not to let him see the effect he was having on me.
“What makes you think that?” He pushed himself off the wall and took a couple of steps in my direction.
“Because every time I spoke these two looked over at you. It was subtle, but I noticed it.”
I saw the corners of his mouth turn up in the slightest of smiles and he gave me a quick nod. “Thanks, guys, I think we're good here. On your way out will you let Dr. Garcia know that she’s awake?”
“Yes, sir,” said the guy before he walked into the hallway. The woman stood there for a moment like she wanted to object but eventually, she followed her partner and closed the door behind her.
It was weird how much bigger the room felt when the four of us were in it as opposed to now with just me and him.
“My apologies ma’am, I’m just realizing that none of us introduced ourselves. I’m Kane Boudreaux.” He held out his hand for me to shake.
Even though there was nothing I wanted more than to reach out and touch him, I hesitated. I took in a deep breath and then placed my hand in his. Immediately the same sensation rushed through me. This has to be a side effect from whatever trauma I had been through tonight. Quickly I tried to compose myself and I cleared my throat.
“Kallisto Lykaios. But you already knew that.” This time I made sure to release my hold on him first.
Before either one of us could say anything else there was a quick knock on the door and a woman wearing scrubs walked in. “Welcome back, you had us worried. I’m Dr. Garcia. How are you feeling?”
“Surprisingly, normal. Can I ask you what happened to me?” The doctor turned towards Kane before turning back to speak with me.
“Are you ok having Mr. Boudreaux in the room? He can relay the information to the police for you that way you won’t have to answer their questions as well.”
“Yeah, I don’t have a problem with that.”
Dr. Garcia started taking my vitals while she went into detail about how my attacker had bitten me but hadn’t broken the skin. She said that one of the men who found me told her that the guy dropped a syringe before he ran. Apparently, he had given me a tranquilizer or something similar to knock me out. The pain I was feeling was my body going into anaphylactic shock. She promised to let me know the results of the toxicology report that way I could be aware of what I was so deathly allergic to.
“Do you think you could describe him?” Kane asked me.
“He stood about an inch or two over me and was average build. Dyed platinum hair that was short and spiky. Dark eyes, light skin. That's all that stood out to me but my co-worker interacted with him too so I could ask him if you need more information.”
“That won’t be necessary. If the police need more they’ll let you know.” Kane looked from me to Dr. Garcia.
I looked down at my phone and saw it was a little after six. “I have work tonight so am I good to go home and get some sleep?”
“All your vitals are back to normal so I don't see a reason to keep you here any longer.” Dr. Garcia replied.
“Thank you. If you wouldn’t mind giving me the address so I can call an uber I’d appreciate it.
“No need. I’ll drive you.” I nodded at him while Dr. Garcia said her goodbyes before exiting the room. “I’m parked a little ways down the road. Are you ok to walk or would you like me to pull the car up for you?”
God, it was such a simple question. Yet here I was going all dreamy again. I’m blaming the deep voice and thick drawl. “I’m good with a walk.”
I hopped off the table and that’s when I realized how tall he really was. I’m almost five foot ten and this guy had at least five or six inches on me. I extended my arm towards the door hoping he would take the lead since I had no clue where I was going. Thankfully, he understood what I was silently implying and I followed behind him. We walked in silence the entire way. When we passed the huge French colonial home he pointed to a truck parked just on the side of it.
“This is me,” he pulled out his keys and hit the remote start. He walked with me to the passenger side and opened the door for me.
The drive to my place was long since we were further from the city than I thought. Kane and I didn’t say much to each other. Honestly, it was difficult for me to be this close to him. When we turned onto my street I let out a quiet sigh of relief realizing this torture was about to end. He pulled the truck in front of my building and I had to fight the urge to jump out and never look back. Instead I pulled myself together and turned towards him.
“Thank you, not only for the ride but also for your men who saved my life. Oh, and I'm sorry for punching you.” Kane gave me a smile that made me melt.
“No harm done and you’re very welcome for both.”
My hand moved to the door handle not realizing that Kane had reached over me to open my door as well. When the two of us made contact I closed my eyes and felt my breath hitch in my throat. I know he had to hear it considering how close he was to me.
“You can feel that?” He asked.
Slowly I opened my eyes and his face was right in front of mine. I couldn’t find the right words to answer him. Partially because I didn’t know what I was feeling and also because I didn’t trust what I would say to him. I bit down on my lip and I watched as his eyes moved to my mouth.
“What the hell,” he said before crashing his lips onto mine.
Holy crap, it felt as if someone had set off a bunch of fireworks inside my body. What I had felt before when our hands touched was nothing compared to this. My entire body was on fire and I was just waiting for the moment until I spontaneously combusted. Kane and mine's lips parted at the exact same time and I felt our tongues collide. He tasted better than anything I had ever experienced.
The next thing I knew his hand was cradling my face, gently holding me closer to him. I bit down on his bottom lip and I swear I heard a noise that resembled a low growl escape from his chest. Obviously there was no way he could be growling but whatever that noise was, it was hot as f**k. I was nowhere near done with him but I felt him reluctantly pull away from me.
We both remained motionless and the only sound you could hear was our breathing. Slowly I reached over for the handle and opened the door. My lust-filled haze was lifting and I knew it was now or never.
“Thank you for the ride.” I jumped out before he had a chance to respond and shut the door.
Even though his windows were tinted black I could feel his eyes on me as I walked away. My fingers touched my lips and I know it’s crazy but it was like I could still feel him. There was no way I could wrap my brain around everything that happened tonight. The only thing I could do was hold onto the memory that beautiful man left me with and continue on with my life.
