While they were talking, the gentlemen joined them and Amy Southwold said,
“It’s so exciting! Lady Cairns says that she will try her powers tonight. I know that it is something that will really interest us all.”
“Do you need any props’ for your exhibition?” Harry enquired.
There was something in the way he spoke and in the laughter in his eyes that made Lily suspect that he thought what she was doing was designed to draw attention to herself.
But what he thought or did not think was unimportant and, as she looked at the Duke a little pleadingly, he said,
“You must not let Harry tease you. I am sure being fey is to you serious and not to be treated lightly.”
“You – understand,” she smiled.
“I want to.”
For a moment she looked into his eyes and the rest of the party was forgotten.
