Chapter 2 - [The Principal's Office]

Sitting in class the next day was actually much harder than normal. I wasn’t just bored today. I was bored and nervous. Apparently, after we had left, a bunch of police cars came. It didn’t even end there… there was also an ambulance. I was lucky to have gotten away. I have to say though, there was a good side to what had happened. As promised, Justin gave me a hundred bucks, and another ten for causing such a commotion. He found it so funny. I thought it was funny too. At least until I got called down to the principal’s office. “Mrs. Sanders.” The women on the P.A. system called. “Yes?” My math teacher answered, looking to be somewhat annoyed that she was being disturbed in the middle of her boring ass lesson. “Would you send Nathan down to the office, please?” My teacher sighed. “Of course.” She looked at me. “Again?” I got up with a frown. “I didn’t do anything…” The kids in my class started to laugh. I wasn’t trying to be funny, but I pretended that I was. I walked down the hall with my hands in my pockets, taking my time. A lot of the teachers knew exactly where I was going and chose not to bother asking. The hall monitor, an old, white haired but buff war veteran, who I had got to know very well, nodded his head at me. “What did you do this time?” He asked. I shrugged. “Dunno.” He rolled his eyes. “Oh Nate.” When I got to the office, Principal Jesse was sitting where she always sits. Thanks to my frequent visits, the office had become so familiar to me. It was a large office and her desk sat right across from the entrance. There were two comfy chairs on the other side of her and there were motivational posters on all the walls. I had the words on every poster memorized. To be honest, I think I come here more then I go to class. I grinned at Ms. Jesse. She was a fairly old woman who pissed a lot of people off. I personally didn’t find her so bad, she cared about the kids, which was kind of funny. She had grey hair that was always tied up in a bun, somewhat cold, blue eyes and red lipstick. Her wrinkled face was not always smiling, but she had a nice smile when it was, and she always came to school dressed up like a business woman. “Son, I’m calling you here because of a serious issue.” She said, clearly not pleased with my grin. “Isn’t it always a serious issue?” I asked. She frowned at me. “Sorry Ms. I didn’t sleep well last night.” “Is the guilt getting to you?” She asked me as she looked at me over her glasses. I raised an eyebrow. “What guilt?” She shook her head. “Nathan, people have told me that you were the one who kicked the soccer ball and shattered the window of Ms. Duncan’s classroom.” I shrugged. “People normally blame things on me.” It was true. “I want you to be honest with me and tell me if it was you or not.” I shrugged again. “It wasn’t me, Ms.” “Nathan, you can get into even more trouble if we have to find out ourselves.” “It wasn’t me, Ms.” I repeated. She looked at me carefully. “Do you know what the result of what… this person… has done is?” She asked me. I shook my head. “I don’t know… brought a need for more money to repair things?” “A student was injured Nathan.” I didn’t say anything. “She may go blind.” I continued to look at her. What?! “The glass shards hit her face, son. The right side of her face is permanently scarred and pieces went into her right eye. She is most likely going to go blind in that eye.” I pressed my lips into a thin line and my eyebrows were raised in shock. No. She’s lying. She’s lying so that I’d feel bad and admit that I did it. “Is she okay?” I asked a little stupidly. She hesitated. “They got the shards out of her skin and she’s being looked after right now. Sadly, she’s a bit traumatized.” “What do you mean traumatized?” “She’s shocked. And very scared.” Ms. Jesse said. She looked at me over her glasses again. “She’s a smart and very sweet girl… and she was a very pretty girl too, Nathan.” “Was?” I asked. “Nathan…” She sighed and pushed her glasses back up. “I obviously will think she’s beautiful no matter what but she’s not going to think that. The poor child is going to look at herself in the mirror and see a different person.” I hesitated. “I don’t know what I’m supposed to say.” “You can help fix this by telling me who kicked the ball.” I shook my head and frowned. “I don’t know.” “Nathan—” “I’m sorry Ms. I don’t know who did it. I’m sorry that this happened to the girl but I can’t do anything about it.” She looked at me for a moment and then nodded. “Alright then, thank you for your time son… if you do find out anything, please let me know. Alright?” I nodded as I got up and left the office. I didn’t return to class though, returning to class was the last thing on my mind. Instead, I left the building and texted Justin. ‘come out NOW.’ I said. After a short moment, he replied. ‘y’ I frowned, growing impatient and angry. ‘hurry up, fucker’ I replied. Justin came out of his class and the second I saw him, I explained to him what happened. He surprised me by laughing. “Who gives a crap. She didn’t die, right?” He asked. “I mean, if she died, that would be a problem.” I shook my head. “You are so…” “Nate. Calm down. Don’t do anything stupid like rat us out, okay?” “Of course I won’t rat us out!” I hissed. “But what the hell do we do about this girl?” He laughed. “Yo, I’m sure she didn’t see. Plus she’s blind in one eye now.” That’s not what I was worried about. What I was worried about was how I was going to be able to deal with seeing this girl. I knew that Justin was pretty freaked out, too I could see it on his face. He was just trying to act cool. He was trying to pretend that he didn’t care. That’s how most of my friends were. And yeah, I was like that too. For the next few months of school, things were weird. There were police officers walking around and teachers seemed to be keeping an eye on me. I however, was looking for someone else. No matter how much I realized that I didn’t want to see her, I kept my eyes open for a girl with a scar on the right side of her face. Strangely, I never saw one.
