Aspen

Aspen We were closer to home that I thought. It was only another hour or so ride and we were entering the courtyard. My brothers were there, along with my mother and father to welcome us home. I closed my eyes as tears stung my eyelids. I wasn’t ready to tell them what had happened, not all of them anyway. My mother, yes. She was my best friend when it came to things of the heart. When they saw me clinging to Zion, a collective growl echoed through the walls. My mother was first to my side after Zion helped me down. He’d given my hand a light squeeze of reassurance before turning to head to my father and brothers. My mother pulled my arms out and looked over every inch of me before cupping my face. “My beloved, what happened?” She asked softly, in that loving mother tone of hers. I couldn’t stop the tears if I tried. They just sprang free as if they had a mind of their own. “Silas.” I shook my head and she pulled me to her, I could feel her eyes finding my father’s in this moment. “He’s my mate.” I was hoping the others didn’t hear, but again, another collective growl came from the male side of my family. My mother pulled me away from her and cupped my face in her hands again. “I don’t understand, Aspen. If he’s your mate, why do you look so broken?” I could detect the concern in her voice and I turned to find Zion’s eyes. I needed him, I couldn’t tell them what happened without him. My mother followed my eyes, looking between me and Zion. “Someone better start talking.” My father demanded, also seeing me look towards my guard. He stepped forward, clearing his throat. “Silas is her mate, and she rejected him in the middle of his wedding.” My gut twisted at the words. It made me seem like a monster. He was in the middle of his wedding, and I caused a scene. “I think I’m going to be sick.” I mumbled, heading for the nearest bench to sit down. “Saying like that makes me sound like some kind of monster, Z. “ I shot him a glare and he frowned. “I tried to reject him. He refused and still married Lena. His kiss to her gutted me. And later that night, after we left, they were trying to….trying to...” The tears were falling again and I couldn’t finish my sentence. They could get the gist of what was going on. I felt strong arms around me and instantly melted into him. After the day and half we’ve had, I’d know his arms anywhere. “Z helped. He took the pain away father.” I buried my face into Zion’s strong chest. I could feel my family’s rage from where I sat. They weren’t angry at me, or Z. Silas had made their s**t list for sure. “How dare he do this to you. “ My father’s voice boomed after a few minutes of silence. They were all processing the information and it wasn’t settling well with anyone. I peeked out from the strong arms that held me, catching my father’s eyes. He was fuming. I don’t think I’d ever seen him so angry. Oh goddess if the rest of the kingdom found out about this, they’d all want Silas’ head on a spike for hurting me. Their golden child. “I want Zion, father. I don’t want to wait until Silas accepts my rejection. He still wants me, but I can’t after this betrayal. I can’t. “ I shook my head and felt Zion tighten his arms around me. I felt safe with him, wanted. I couldn’t miss the spark of delight that came from the eyes of my family. This is what they wanted all along. Maybe not with Z, maybe with Z, but they wanted me to be happy with who I was with. My heart ached with the love they had for me. “Zion, do you want my daughter?” My father asked, trying hard to put on his best death glare. I could feel Zion tense a little, but then a smile hit his lips and I couldn’t help but smile. It was contagious. “Every day, for the rest of my life.” He said before looking down at me. I felt warmth spread through my body and I buried my head into him again. My father clapped his hands together. “Well! We have a wedding to prepare for! Let’s not waste more time! I’ve been waiting for this day since you were born!” I had to laugh, he seemed much more excited about this than I thought he would be. Zion leaned his head down, close to my ear and I got a chill of excitement.  “You’re mine now, Aspen. All mine.”
