Lepicher’s quick eyes took in her decorations and the books. “I thought you were joking when you asked for two book cases,” she said, “but I see I was wrong. Think you’ll need another one?” Penrys laughed. “I hope not. Though there’s a list of things I’m looking for you might be able to help me find.” She stooped down to pick up the device that had been shoved to the side by the opening of the door. “About the noise… Look, here’s one of the devices, see? There’s another one just like it at the window. I set them when I leave, and if someone tampers with them while I’m away they go off.” She looked Lepicher in the face. “If they persist and try to pick them up, they’ll get a nasty shock, too.” Her landlady nodded slowly. “That’s why you turned down the cleaning service, right?
