The DeceptionWhen I got home, it was not yet noon. So I sat in my study. It made complete sense for Major Blackwood to have worked with the Golden Bridges. I now understood his spending so much time at the parties of the high-born. I could even hear his voice in some of their articles. Yet now, he was dead. And Mrs. Spade’s neighbor. Dead, just days after referring Mrs. Spade to me. I felt sure Mrs. Spade hid something about Maria Athena’s letter. But what? And why? I needed to know, and soon. Whilst Tony and Roy were both fluent in Italian, I couldn’t bring Maria Athena’s letter to them. Mrs. Spade had been incredibly brave to hire me in the first place.
