The Departure
Veronica sighed softly as she curled the last piece of her long, dark brown hair. She brushed through the curls with her fingertips to soften them up before putting on a tight white button up shirt over her bright red lacy bra. She pulled on a short pleated mini skirt and a pair of black high heeled pumps. She added a quick layer of bright red lipstick before standing up to walk through her New York apartment.
Veronica was a beautiful young woman at just eighteen years old, but for someone so young she had known a lifetime of hardship. Her family was in a terrible car accident when she was seven; both of her parents died on impact, but Veronica survived with just minor injuries. She had no family able to take her in, so she was placed into foster care until her eighteenth birthday when she was promptly kicked out of the system and left to fend for herself. She made it through high school with terrible grades and worked to support herself with a few part time jobs. It was when she received an eviction notice that she began to feel desperate. She wanted to get away from her struggles and live a happier life.
That’s when Veronica found and applied for Harlen Academy. The academy touted their education as a way for people to change their lives entirely; to become successful and live a life of prosperity. Plus, they offered free education and free student housing. This was enough to excite Veronica.
Veronica walked through her apartment, gathering a few items she had missed and tossing them into her duffel bag. She zipped the bag up, threw on her coat, grabbed the bag, and walked out of the apartment for the last time. She dropped her apartment key into her mailbox and navigated the twisting hallways of the apartment complex before finally making it to the front gate. She walked into the chilly spring morning and noticed an older man in a black suit.
“Are you Ms. Veronica Winfield?”, asked the man.
Veronica nodded and looked down at her feet, shyly.
“Wonderful, my name is Alfred and I’m the chauffeur that Harlen sent to help you get to school. May I take your bag?”, asked Alfred with a smile. Veronica handed him the bag and followed him to a beautiful vintage Rolls Royce. The two of them piled into the car and drove away. Veronica watched as the skyline, the people, and all of the negativity was left behind her. She felt relaxed and positive as the car sped further and further away.
Veronica awoke an hour later to Alfred gently shaking her.
“Ms Winfield, we have arrived, and it is almost time for your interview. Please enter that main building in front of us. Good luck!”, said Alfred, smiling politely.
“Thank you so much, Alfred,” answered Veronica. She took her bag and walked toward the door. She stopped to notice the beautiful campus she was walking into. The building in front was an older building made of dark red brick, and a tower on top covered in ivy. The campus was covered in large, beautiful trees that were just starting to grow bright green leaves. Veronica opened the main door to the building as was greeted by a middle aged woman sitting at a desk in front of her.
“Hello, are you here for an interview?”, asked the woman.
Veronica nodded and smiled, and them woman offered her directions toward an office in the back where the interview would take place. Veronica followed the directions, and noticed that the building was even more beautiful on the inside than it was on the outside. The walls were a light pink with gold detailing, the walls were covered in amazing works of art. She turned the final corner, entered the waiting area, and sat down. She was nervous but she started straight ahead and tried to stay calm as she waited for her interview.
