“What shall I tell His Grace, Princess?” “What time is dinner?” Caterina asked. “I suppose about eight o’clock.” “Very well. Tell His Grace I will join him at seven o’clock and, if it is warm enough, I would like to stroll on deck before we sit down to dinner.” Malca made no comment and left the cabin. When she had gone, Caterina wondered if she had made a mistake. Then she thought, however much they raged at each other, they would be obliged to stop and go to bed before very long. At the same time she was frightened and could not pretend otherwise. She had a bath and then Malca took out of the small wardrobe in the cabin one of her very prettiest and most attractive evening gowns. She had bought it just before going to Istria and she had been assured that it was a Paris model. H
