Chapter Three
The scent of their pack surrounded me as I sat in a chair next to Emma and Justyn, awaiting their Alpha. Emma was speaking about some drama that happened the night before, while Justyn looked bored. I just sat staring forward feeling rather uncomfortable in this tiny waiting room. They call this their pack house? Emma mentioned that this is where all the higher ups in the pack lived upstairs, and the main floor was like offices and game rooms. She really wanted to show me around but we were stopped before even entering. After all, I was not apart of her pack. We were brought to the Alpha office right away and were just waiting to be called on. I almost felt like I had a doctor's appointment, the set up was the same non-the-less.
“Melody, The Alpha will see you now.” The secretary waved to the door on her right. We all stood together, all seemed to sigh with relief. “Not you two. Miss Lewis, Mr Moore, wait here.” She motioned towards Emma and Justyn.
“I’ll be fine.” I smiled at them and disappeared behind the door.
“Take a seat.” The alpha's voice sent shivers down my spine. I wanted nothing more than to turn tail and run! My wolf instincts were fully activated, it felt like I was on the brink of transforming. With my heart racing, I quickly walked over to the big desk and sat in front of it. The desk was huge, it looked like it was made out of solid wood and curved in the shape of a U. Two computers were on either side and an open desk lay facing me.
The alpha looked monstrous. Like a huge body builder you would see in competitions. He wore a black suit that seemed to just fit him. His hair was cut short on the sides, and just hardly longer on the top. All grey. His blue eyes showed brightly with curiosity as he leaned back in his chair.
“What brings you to Pack Crescent without an invitation?” Annoyance flickered in his features.
“Oh… uh…” It was hard to speak, my mouth felt dry. Clearing my throat and mustering all my courage. I continued, “I was hoping you could help me find my pack.”
He didn’t say anything for what felt like years. His eyes intently watching me, thinking things over before he leaned foreword.
“Why did you lose them?” he asked, leaning his elbows on his desk, resting his chin lightly on his folded hands.
“Oh, uh… I’m not su-sure.” I stuttered. I felt like I was going to throw up. “I grew up in foster care. I don’t know where my pack is.”
“Hummm.” He sat back in his chair, stroking the stubble on his chin.
“You are still connected to them, I can tell that much, but the aura is… different…” He went back to thinking for a moment. It almost looked as if his eyes glazed over for a moment. Maybe this was mind linking like in the stories I've read online? “On the full moon there will be a way to go to the primitive world. We will bring you with us when we go. I believe your pack will be there. If not, we can always sever the link and you can happily join us as a Luna, since it does appear you share her blood line.” He smiled. “My son Ronnie could be a good fit. He comes from a strong blood line, your pups would be tough!” He laughed.
“Oh uh… I will consider that off-offer.” I tried to smile sweetly at him. From what I understand of the pack, that would be a great offer. I would be one of the highest ranks in the pack, but what about Felix? The memory of her and her brown eyes looking up at Ronnie, and the thought I would take that away. I didn’t like it.
“Until then, I will set you up with a suit here. The full moon is in 2 days, so on the 3rd night we will leave.” He moved over to his computer and started to type something up. “You may leave now. Mr. Berkley will see you to your room.”
“Thank you for your kindness.” I stood and sort of bowed to him. I myself was confused by this awkward transaction, so I quickly left the room.
“Hello Miss, please follow me.” A man right outside the office motioned for me before I fully closed the door behind me. He was in a full black suit. His hair was black but powdered with grey. I glanced over to see Emma and Justyn following closely behind.
“Hello Mr Berkley!” Emma said excitedly.
“Greetings Miss Lewis and Mr Moore.” He nodded to them as he continued walking.
“So the Alpha is letting you stay?” Emma asked with way too much energy clinging onto my arm.
I could only nod and smile as we went up to an elevator.
“This way please.” Mr Berkley stood aside for us as we all filled into the small space.
“The first floor is for everyone, the second is for Gamma or higher.” Mr Berkley explained as he pointed to each button on the elevator. “The third floor is for the Beta’s, and the fourth and fifth floors are for the Luna’s and Alpha’s.” He motioned as he pressed the fourth floor button.
“WAIT! She is staying in the Luna suit?” Emma yelled, shocked.
“Of course she is a Luna after all,” Mr Berkley smiled. Justyn, who had been very silent throughout all of this, made a grunting sound and looked away from me. He looked upset. I didn’t understand why. Emma pulled my attention back to her as she got closer into my personal space, staring at my eyes.
“I guess it is true then, huh? Blue eyes?” She mentioned.
“Oh… uh… I guess so.” I replied. “The Alpha said he could sense the bloodline or something?” I continued in a whisper.
“Wow, that is so cool! The pack doesn’t actually have a Luna besides Ronnie’s mother. She is super sweet but she's in the alpha suit so you’ll get this all to yourself!” Emma practically jumped out of the elevator, dragging me with her. “OMG we have to have a sleep over!” She cried out as we ran from room to room to room.
“You can choose any room to stay in, they are all empty.” Mr Berkley called after us. “I will be here if you need anything!”
“Oh wow, look at this room! Oh no look at this one!” Emma was just running from room to room looking at them all. She left me behind and I just laughed. These were great rooms, they were massive and had everything I would ever need in each of them. It was hard to choose which one I liked best as they were just all so perfect.
“This is the one!” Emma yelled out as she entered one around the corner out of sight.
“A Luna, huh?” Justyn sighed next to me, as he ran a hand through his hair.
“I guess so? I thought you couldn’t be a Luna unless you mated an Alpha?” I asked, hoping to get some information on the topic.
Justyn smiled and turned to me. “Your cute when your curious.” I felt the heat rise to my cheeks, I had to look away. My eyes lingered on the floor. It was a hardwood that almost looked like an oak maybe? It has been stained or laminated a deep red.
“You’re born with the Luna ability, they can range from having an actual power, like some of the appointed Gamma’s. Or its just the ability to produce more Luna’s and Alpha’s. Some packs are different, of course, and how they handle their Luna’s ranking can range. But here we hold them to high ranks. Not many have been born into our pack.” He motioned to the empty floor.
“I wonder why that is?” I asked as we stopped walking, now talking in the hall while Emma’s voice could be heard in the distance, ohhhing and ahhhing at the room she chose.
“Some think it's from having a weak blood line,” he said.
“What do you think it is?” I asked, a little too bold.
“I’m not sure,” he said as he pulled me close. I could hear a hint of sadness in his voice. I wanted to ask him what made him upset? But Emma bounced around the corner and pulled me away.
“COME ON! YOU GOTTA CHECK THIS OUT!” She howled very impatiently. “Look at the size of this thing!” She pulled me into a very dark room, my eyes quickly adjusted to see a massive screen in front of us. “Its the biggest TV I have ever seen!” She said as she sprawled out on one of the 4 beds in the room. Each bed had two pillows and 2 throw pillows, and a blanket. All in a staggered formation pointing at a screen, a projector was located above us on the ceiling.
“We are SOOOO doing a movie night!” She screeched as she pulled her phone out and started calling someone.
That night we all piled into the forgotten theater room, ordered pizza and watched a movie called “Free Guy.” It was super funny, but I couldn’t help feeling the anonymous stares from Felix behind me, as I was switched between Justyn and Ronnie, with Emma lying on my leg. I wish I could tell her nothing was going to change. I hoped Ronnie’s dad didn’t tell him about our meeting, but with how everyone was acting, maybe he did? It didn’t matter. I was going to find my pack.
The next few days flew by, I was treated like a queen. I had wanted for nothing and the pack made sure of it. It made me feel uneasy as the full moon was approaching. I wonder what this other would be like?
“They are waiting on the first floor, Miss Melody.” Mr Berkley said through the bedroom door. Mr Berkley, was a Gamma, tasked to serve the Alpha’s and Luna’s, but Ronnie assured me that he was paid very well.
“On my way!” I called as I pulled my brown sweater over my head and down the length of my body. The sweater was just a tad lighter than my hair, it really made my pale complexion stand out.
We quickly got to the first floor where some of the pack had gathered together. Most of them are tasked with carrying items such as food and clothes to trade. I’m not sure what they would be traded for but that's all Ronnie would tell me.
Trudy, the pack Luna greeted me with a warm smile and an extended hug. “I’m so sad to see your going to be leaving us.” She squeezed me before letting me go.
“I am sad to leave too! I like it here, I just really want to find my family.” I smiled back at her. And I really did mean it. I did like her. I also really liked Justyn, who was part of the beta family pack, but knew even if I did stay I would be breaking Ronnie and Felix up, which was not something I wanted. Something I wished I could tell Felix directly, but she's been avoiding me, which I understand.
“Well! Time to get going! Its almost midnight!” Trudy gave a short wave before walking back over to her husband, her long silver hair flowing behind her.
We all left shortly after and headed to the back of the house. There, Ronnie told me a secret but also a not-so secret underground spring, that the Luna could turn into their gateway to this other place. The whole idea behind it seems crazy to me, but then again, I can turn into a wolf, so who knows what's real out there or just folklore?
The entrance to the spring was hidden under a statue of a wolf. Trudy stood in front of it and it looked like she had begun praying. It seemed crazy to me to watch this unfold before my eyes. Ronnie and his father Ned, the alpha, begin pushing the statue back, revealing a cellar below.
Slowly, the group of about 10 of us were all inside. The air down here was stale and smelled of too many scents to make much out. Running water could be heard in the distance but we were heading away from it. The small tunnel opened into a large room with a circle in it and an alter in the middle. Along the stone walls were drawings of wolves and hand prints.
Trudy got my attention as she stood in front of the altar. She glowed in the night even though there was no way for the moon to access this room, it was like she was the moon. Trudy met my eyes and smiled, extending a hand out to me, inviting me to stand next to her.
“Its been many moons since I had a helper!” She joked to the crowd. I couldn’t help but feel like I was about to be sacrificed on the altar and this was some weird cult I had walked into. Picking up on my heightened fear, Trudy reassured me, “I know this is so crazy, but no one is dying tonight. I still remember my first time too.” She let out a soft giggle as the freckles on her face seemed to glow with each movement. “Just come stand next to me, feel the calling of our mother.”
I stood next to her behind the altar. Looking down, there was some type of scroll laid out. Across it were symbols I didn’t understand, along with the rotation of the moon. It almost resembled a calendar.
“Close your eyes sweets.” She told me. Snapping back to the task at hand, I closed my eyes. “Take a deep breath in.” She took the biggest breath and I followed her. “And out.” We both let the air escape our lungs. “Again.” I followed suit with her, I could feel something inside me start moving, it started in my stomach and slowly spread through out my body. It tickled at first, then turned into a warm numb sensation. Was this the goddess' gift? Or maybe this was just the Luna ability? I could figure it out, but whatever I was feeling, Trudy was too.
“Magnificent isn't it!” I heard her say. I kept my eyes closed, scared to let go of this feeling, this moment.
“HEIM!” she screamed. Startling me. The room spun around and I crashed to the floor just missing the alter that stood before us. I opened my eyes but everything was a blur. I couldn’t see straight. Lifting a hand to my head, I let out a groan. The warm sensation left my entire body, now all I felt was nauseous. The contents of my stomach didn’t stay for long as I turned over throwing up.
“She’s new, eh?” a southern voice asked.
“Yes just give us a moment please!” Trudy asked. I felt her hands surround me, and she pulled me to my feet. “We gotta move quickly if we want to stay”. I understood her words but I couldn’t speak. It felt like I was drunk, but I hadn’t drank anything before.
“This guy is trying to get one over on us.” A strange voice rang in my mind.
“Pass on it. We don’t need such things in my pack.” A deeper voice responded.
“Am I going mad?” I thought to myself. Feeling sick and now voices in my head. I looked up to Trudy, “I think I am going to be s-“ I didn’t think there was anything left but I threw up the last of what remained in my stomach.
“Here drink this” Trudy pressed something to my lips. I gladly drank its contents, wanting nothing more than to get this taste out of my mouth. The fluid tasted like fresh water, it felt amazing going down. “Can you stand?” she asked.
“I think so.” Trudy helped me to my feet as I slowly took in our surroundings. It looks like we in a huge street full of markets and people. Before us stood a stage, no a platform that we had just came off of. That may be like a teleporter perhaps?
“Who is this?” An angry voice in my mind shouted, almost knocking me to my knees.
“Is there something wrong?” Trudy asked, not sure if she should let go of me or not.
“Th-there is someone talking to me, th-they sound angry.” I managed to make out.
“Oh! Great! That should be your pack, perhaps the Alpha!” She smiled sweetly, steering me down the crowded street, following the rest of the pack as they moved.
“I-I’m Melody…” I said in my thoughts, thinking maybe it would send. I didn’t know how the mind linking worked. Maybe this was just how it was. I couldn’t imagine just always having others able to hear my thoughts.
We entered what looked to be a food court with tables sprawled out in every which way. There was an empty stand close by that the pack was filling with foods we brought over, most likely to sell or trade I guess. The people here looked to be from all over my own world and this one. Wolves also roamed free, some were so massive they stood as tall as a horse. Light music played in the distance, like someone was strumming away on a guitar.
“Where are you?” The voice appeared again. This time it seemed less angry.
“Are you my p-pack? I-I don’t know. I’m sitting in a food court, I th-think.” I tried not to stutter but the voice was so intimidating.
“Are they coming?” Trudy questioned as she came back from the empty stall with some of the food they had brought over with them.
“I’m not sure. They asked where I was.” I said as she passed me an orange, which I started to un-peel.
“Tell them we are in the Food District, in the Market Square.” She smiled as she placed her hand on my knee and squeezed them.
Before I could figure out how to tell them, three men burst into the area. They seemed out of place and looking for something. I made eye contact with one. He had blue eyes much like my own, his overall build was bigger than most men in the market, and could almost rival Ned. His hair was tied back in a long ponytail, a full but tidy beard covered his chin and tattoos that covered both his arms and looked like they continued under his robe.
Next to him were two other men, similar in build but a little smaller. One with blond hair, braided down the back, and the other with brown hair, with smaller braids in the front.
“That seems to be them, NED!” Trudy called over her shoulder after looking at the men approaching. Embarrassed, I just looked straight down at the orange in my hands, I started peeling this thing like my life depended on it. I felt like my chest was going to explode and my stomach might empty its contents again. The nerves were too much.
“Melody.” The deep voice no longer in my mind said just above the sound of the crowd. I had to look up.
“Y-yes.” I timidly said as I looked up at him, I couldn’t tell if he was happy or not. I stood on my feet, making it just up to his chest. I was tiny compared to this man.
“We have been helping her find her pack, are you three of them?” Ned asked. The man before me nodded his head.
“We owe you many thanks!” The man with the blonde hair stated. “Please come to the Shadow Pack any time so we can repay you for your kindness,” he stated.
Ned nodded his head, “We will take you up on that. Melody,” He turned to me. “Till we meet again.” He nodded his head once more but in my direction. I smiled at him, and thanked him for all his help. Without them I really wouldn't have ever found this place.
“We did just get here, so she is feeling a little under the weather, and may get sick. No need to worry!” Trudy looked more worried than they did.
“Thank you for your kindness.” The biggest man out of the three said as he extended a hand towards me. “Lets go home.”
