Why are they shooting at her, and who was that?

None of this made any sense, but there was no mistaking that those bullets had been meant for her. Her heart pounded so loudly in her ears that she couldn’t hear anything else. Why was this happening? What was going on? The sight of Zane barreling out the front porch with a gun in his hand forced a sob of relief to escape her lips.

He fired several shots towards Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van that speed off, where the shoots had earlier come from as he ran toward her.

“You all right?” he asked, his voice a terse snap of tension.

She gave a curt nod, unable to find her voice.

“Did you see anyone?” he asked.

“No, I just felt the first bullet buzz by my head, and I ran.” A tremble tried to take hold of her body, but she fought against it, knowing she couldn’t give in to her fear until she was safe and sound.

She certainly felt safer with Zane by her side, but someplace out there was somebody who had apparently just tried to kill her not once, not twice, but three times.

chapter 1
"I can't believe you're going to do something so stupid and risky," Jayden Matthews exclaimed. Tess leaned back on the kitchen counter and smiled at her twin brother. "This conversation is backwards. Isn't it usually me saying stuff like that to you?" They were seated in Tess kitchen where the late June breeze drifted through the open door, bringing with it the sweet scent of summer. "Well, that's normal because I am the one always doing stupid, crazy and reckless stuff all the time," Jayden replied. He picked up his coffee and took a sip, eyeing Tess over the top of the mug as if his twin sister had been possessed by an evil spirit or replaced by a look alike alien. "Maybe this is some sort of postpartum crisis," He asked, placing his mug back on the table. Tess laughed, " Dude, it's been a year since I was pregnant. This is definitely not any postpartum anything. She stopped laughing as she leaned forward. " I have to do this, Jay. I have made up my mind first thing tomorrow morning." Jayden shook his head. "Before you leave, I should at least get the directions to where you'll be so I know where the search is in case you get into trouble." Tess opened the manila folder next to the laptop and took a piece of paper. "I already intend to give you all the information, although I'm 100%certain not to be expecting any trouble." She handed Jayden the directions she had printed off her computer earlier that day. "You’re leaving here to travel almost three hundred miles away to a place you've never been in your life cos someone on the internet, who you've never seen or met before told you to go there. OMG, Tess, sounds very brilliant to me," Jayden said sarcastically. Tess felt an uncharacteristic flush heat cheeks. "It's not just anyone. It's MomAid." "Sure, and for all we know, this MomAid could be some male p*****t lounging around in his underwear and talking with you over the computer." Once again, Tess couldn't help but laugh. "I have been corresponding through mail with MomAid for almost two years now. I'd think if that were the case, I would have gotten a clue by now. Besides, I will be travelling with my gun. Both Tess and Jayden had gotten a gun from their grandmother on their twent-first birthday two years ago, an unusual birthday present from a strong, nontraditional woman. She single handle raising the twins since they were five after their parents death. She had a violent mugging and had sworn her grandchildren would never be helpless victims. "Good to know. At least I feel a lot better now hearing that," Jayden concluded. "It would make me feel a little better if you had a job. Are you putting in applications anywhere?" Tess asked, so eager to get the discussion off her plans and on something else. Certainly, Jayden's lack of employment was a concern, especially since he was done with school already. He is twenty-three years old and just seems to be drifting through life at the moment. "Sure, of cos am trying, but I can't find wants to pay well and willing to hire me. " "Maybe if you'd take of all your excess rings on your face, maybe someone would be interested in giving you a job," Tess replied gently. "Or you can go back to school to further, Jay, you were the best in your class. It's not like you don't have the money to do that, or you can try modelling. You've always wanted to do it. You have the look." "Okay, that's my clue to get out out of here," Jayden said, not hiding his irritation. He checked his phone. Not only do I not want one of your loving lectures, but I'm meeting Sasha in a few minutes for a late lunch." "When do I get to meet this paragon of virtue that you've been seeing?" Tess asked as both stood up from the chair. Jayden gave her a secretive smile. "When I am comfortable enough and she is ready, will do the introduction." Together, they walked to the front door. "Call me as soon as you get to where you are going, and let me know that you and my nephews are okay?" "Of course, will do just that," Tess replied and pulled Jayden close for a quick hug. There were just ten minutes apart, but Tess had always mothered Jayden. Their parents died when they were five, so Tess always felt she had to take care of them both and always acted like a mother to Jay than a twin sister. Jayden stepped out of the embrace and walked out of the front door. "You know the route. Please drive carefully and be aware of any potential danger around you, I love you and do take good care of yourself." "I will. And when I get back, I want to meet this Sasha of yours,"Tess replied. Jayden waved his hand as he headed towards his expensive black sports car in the driveway. Tess watched until Jayden's car zoomed out of sight and then returned back into the house, shutting the door behind her. For a moment, she simply stood in the middle of the living room and listened to the silence. It was rare for the house to be his quiet. Tess hoped it would stay that way for another one hour or more so she could finish packing up for her road trip in the morning. She scooted into her bedroom, determined to take advantage of the little time she had. She tried not to think of want Jayden had said, but she couldn't stop her words for echoing in her head. Risky? Tess had only made on risky things in her entire life, and the consequence of that one action changed her entire life forever. No, she didn't believe what she planned for the next day was particularly risky. As crazy as it sounds, she trusted the woman who had been her cyber friend for almost two years. MomAid has been a source of support and comfort from the time she had found out she was pregnant until now. She had never given Tess a reason not to trust her. Tess put the last clothes in suitcase and then closed and latched it. She left her bedroom and went to the door next to hers. The walls were baby blue, and the furniture was white. There was a double dresser, a rocking chair, and three cribs, one holding a precious eleven month old. Tess leaned against the door as her thoughts drifted back in time. Back to that faithful night, she had attended her best friend wedding party. The party had been one wild one. Then, a handsome gentleman danced and flirted with her as they downed glasses of alcohol like water the entire event. When she'd awaken up the next morning in her hotel room with him next to her, she was horrified. She stumbled out of the bed and into the bathroom. The hangover she had suffered was nothing compared to the embarrassment that flooded through her ad she realised what had happened. When she left the bathroom only to discover he had gone, she decided to shove her first and last one night stand at the back of her mind. She then returned to her life as a fashion magazine editor and hadn't thought about him again. Until two months later , she discovered she was pregnant. It was that time that she tried to find him. But all she knew was that he was from Texas, and he went by the name Kane (she guessed). She'd called her friend who had thrown the party that night, but Mia had told her the guy was a friend of a friend had didn't know him well enough to know his last name or where exactly his from. Eight weeks after that, when the doctor informed Tess she was expecting triplets, she'd stopped trying to find him and instead focused all her time and energy on preparing herself to be a mother of three. It wasn't until three days ago that MomAID had sent her a message indicating that she thought she had found the man from that night. His name was Kane Cole, and his family owned the largest companies in Jacinto City. Tess had no idea how her online friend had come up with the information, but it felt right. She remembered Kane saying something about his family own almost half Jacinto City. She'd gotten all the information that she needed a few days ago and then last night after the a slightly traumatic even, had decided to pack up the boys and drive to Jacinto City. She smiled as Jared peeked over the crib railing. His dark curls were tousled from his nap, and a delightful smile curved from his rosebud lips. Tess hurried over and picked him up, hoping to sneak out of the room before she awakened his brothers. But at that very moment, Jeremy and Jason also woke up, squealing to get down and breaking the silence that had momentarily gripped the house.
