Evelyn POV
Valeria was sitting cross-legged, her eyes closed and her breathing was slow and calm. She was floating about three feet above the ground, and I stared at her in fascination.
Her family had stayed the night, and in the morning Aidan had given me a whole list of exercises that Valeria could do to practice. We worked on them several times a day for the past three days, and I noticed that she really tried to involve me in her training. Even though I had only been her assistant for four days, I realized that I was growing into the role and I was really good at it.
I jumped slightly and stifled a gasp when a flower picked itself from a nearby bush and floated towards Valeria. She still had her eyes closed, but she reached out her hand and it landed in her palm.
She opened her eyes, unfolded her legs and landed softly on the ground. I clapped my hands in a small applause.
“Well done.” I complimented. “You have come a long way in just a few days.”
Valeria smiled.
“I guess I just needed some time to get used to being a lycan.” She replied. “I haven’t really taken the time to get to know my new body and how to interact with my new wolf.”
“Well, you’ve improved a lot in the past few days.” I grinned.
Valeria smiled at me amusingly.
“So have you.” She replied.
I frowned.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“I mean that you seem so much more relaxed since you came here.” She shrugged. “I like it. You should feel comfortable here, and you are doing a really good job.”
I smiled.
“I can’t describe it.” I admitted. “I just feel safe here, like I was destined to come here.”
Valeria smirked, but suddenly turned serious.
“There’s something I’ve been wanting to ask you, and it feels like you might be comfortable enough to tell me.” She said.
I frowned.
“What is it?”
Valeria led me to the bench in the middle of the garden and we sat down.
“Can you tell me about your life in your old pack?” She asked.
Coldness settled in the pit of my stomach and I instinctively hugged myself.
“I hated it there.” I whispered. “I grew up in an orphanage with a bunch of other children. We were hated by everyone. We were bullied in school by the other students and teachers. they always found a reason to hurt us, and even one small accident could get you whipped ntil you passed out. Then, whenever someone turned eighteen, they disappeared one by one.”
Valeria frowned.
“Did they leave, or did something happen to them?” She asked.
I blinked rapidly, but I couldn’t stop the tears from trickling down my cheeks.
“The Alpha.” I sobbed. “Every time someone shifted, he came to get them. We never saw them again.”
Valeria nodded.
“Do you know why the Alpha would do that?” She asked.
I hesitated.
“I don’t have any proof.” I whimpered, and Valeria put her hand on my arm.
“It’s okay.” She said. “Tell me everything you know, I believe you.”
I took a deep breath and wiped my tears.
“The pack hated us.” I said. “Our parents were traitors that tried to overthrow the Alpha, and they all died when I was a baby. They say that it was an explosion, but I’ve heard other stories about what happened.”
“They were killed?” Valeria asked.
I nodded.
“Where are the other orphans?” Valeria asked. “The Alpha said that the orphanage burned down.”
“The night they burned down the orphanage, Micah had just shifted.” I replied. “They came to get him. I was the only one left. Micah and I were the only ones left.”
“Where’s Micah now?” Valeria asked.
I buried my face in my hands, my heart breaking when I thought about my friend that was like a brother to me.
“The warriors took him into the forest.” I sobbed. “They came out without him.”
Valeria pulled me into a hug, and I cried on her shoulder. For some reason, I allowed myself to let it all go and cry out all of my pain and grief. Valeria hugged me while I cried, staying silent and just gently rubbing my back.
“There’s someone I want you to meet.” Valeria said after a while when I pulled away. “Take a moment to gather yourself, and let’s go.”
I nodded and wiped my tears.
“I’m sorry about this.” I said and gestured to my tear-stricken face.
Valeria shrugged.
“Everyone needs a good cry every now and then.” She smiled.
She took my hand and led me through the castle to her office.
When she opened the door, I gasped.
”Tony?” I asked in disbelief.
“Evy.” He smiled and hugged me tightly.
Tony Burke was one of the few pack members that was actually nice to me growing up, and I really missed him after he moved away.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
“Mr Burke is the reason we came to visit the pack.” Valeria explained. “We wouldn’t have found you without him.”
Tony’s eyes welled up with tears and he caressed my hair.
“I’m so sorry I couldn't get there sooner.” He cried. “I tried to make someone listen, but I didn’t have any proof, so I couldn’t get anyone to investigate it.”
“They are all gone.” I whimpered. “I’m the only one left.”
He hugged me tightly.
“You’re not alone.” He whispered. “In fact, you have more family than you might think.”
My eyes widened and I stared at him.
“I don’t understand.“ I frowned.
I glanced at the queen, and she looked confused too.
“It’s peculiar that you managed to rescue Evy of all people, my queen.” Tony said to Valeria. “You see, Evy’s father was a brother to the Alpha heir. He risked his life to help his brother escape. He was leading the resistance against the Alpha, hoping that his brother would come back and take back the pack.”
I frowned in confusion while the blood drained from Valeria’s face.
“No way.” She whispered and covered her mouth with her hands.
“What?” I asked, still not understanding what was going on.
“You’re my cousin.” Valeria whispered.
