I was impressed at the fact that she was so naive but yet knowledgeable at the same time. She usually never smiled unless she was around her friends or the occasional time spent with me.
I always wondered if she had a rough childhood because she never talked about her feelings, it's always the typical “My apologies McKenzie” or the distant awkward moments we shared whenever she listened to me whine about my horrible love life.
What I was seriously questioning above my terrible excuse to be a good friend to her was how the f*ck did she levitate off the freaking floor!
What I witnessed yesterday was truly out of this world and I seriously needed answers.
Which I was determined to get out of her even if I had to beat them out.
Just kidding, I wouldn’t hurt Amora. How could anyone?
She was so damn loveable.
I pulled the sheet off my body as I swung my legs over the edge of the mattress, still rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
I stood, making my way to my closet for a change of clothes. Standing in front of the clothes, I tousled my hair with a bored look over the lack of choices I had. I mean sure my closet was fully loaded with many choices, I wanted something that seriously begged for Amora's attention.
Once I found the perfect outfit, I decided to change in my room since Amora wasn't around; she probably ditched me again, being the loser I am.
I was in the middle of replacing my shirt, without pants as my door creaked open, “I hope you don't mind, I made breakf—”
There was a thud noise as I turned crimson red, noticing Amora had stumbled into the room. I started to get nervous when neither one of us spoke, not one word.
Both of us stared into each other's eyes as I stood half-naked with my shirt only covering my neck.
I covered my bare parts as Amora blinked rapidly in the doorway of my room; she tilted her head, “Why are you naked?”
I coughed, “It's called changing, Amora.”
She nodded once, “I need to excuse myself, like right now.”
I pressed my lips together as she awkwardly attempted to place the plates on the nightstand nearest the bed. I watched her mainly fail to complete the task as she nearly dropped everything she was holding. She even stumbled, tripping over her own feet as she left the room, letting out shaky sorry and damn it along the way.
I bit my lip as I struggled to keep my laughter inside as she fell out of my room. She actually escaped by sliding on her stomach as I watched her slither past my doorway and into the hall. The view was incredibly hilarious and worth the wait because her exit took roughly ten minutes of pure stumbling and being one hundred percent awkward.
I finished changing in peacemaking sure I took a second look over in the mirror that was about the length of a door.
I smiled at my reflection, “Perfect.”
I walked back to the doorway calling out for Amora that it was safe to return.
She replied, “No.”
I sighed heavily as I rolled my eyes, she was something else.
I decided to grab the plates of food and join Amora, which happened to be the living room where she was still lying flat on her stomach with Thor on her back.
Which got me thinking, did she slide down the stairs like that?
I chuckled at the thought, I could see Amora doing that, she's so strange.
I blinked away the thoughts before I lost all control over my growing laughter, which wasn't helpful when I saw Amora lying ever so still on her stomach.
I almost dropped the food when I came into view of her and my dog which caused me to chuckle as I quickly turned around to avoid seeing her like that.
My stomach had enough exercise for the rest of the day.
With my back turned, I asked, “How's the bonding going?”
Her answer was muffled, “With me and the floor or me and your dog?”
I chuckled quietly, “You and Thor.”
Unenthusiastically she responded, “Great …”
I had to bite my lip from laughing anymore.
Dear Lord, I was acting so childish for my age, and yes I'm actually older than you think, to settle some thoughts, I'm actually not a teen anymore.
I know, I know what you're thinking, if she's not a teen anymore, why was she still in school?
The answer to that was simple, I had a rough childhood and I didn't care to go into much detail, at least not yet.
I knew I was never alone back then and to this day my grandparents visit me every so often to make sure I was doing okay.
I didn't dwell on my younger days much longer because I preferred to keep those painful thoughts away.
I took a long inhale as I closed my eyes; it was time to woman up and stops acting childish. With the plates in hand, I turned around as I opened my eyes to Amora still lying on the floor.
I dropped the plates as I let out the most embarrassing laugh that came with the sound of a goose before full laughter took over, I seriously couldn't contain it much longer.
What the hell was wrong with me? God, she must think I'm an i***t.
Amora turned her face towards me with a smirk, she raised her brow, “You good?”
I tried to come up with a decent answer but what came out was exasperated no when I saw Amora go cross-eyed at the sausage link in front of her.
Her face scrunched up, “Aw … all my hardwork, slaving over a hot stove for you … ” she sniffled, “Ruined.”
I couldn't take it anymore, all the sad pouting and adorable fake sniffles she made, gave me a strange feeling deep within my heart, almost like I actually kind of liked her.
Sure I kissed her, but I just meant to shut her up … I think … but the nagging voice in my head keeps telling me it's unhealthy to lie to yourself.
I just told the voice to shut the hell up because it didn't know what it was talking about.
Amora and I were just friends, nothing more.
Amora spoke, “What are you thinking about?”
“Huh?”
“You have that look on your face whenever you get lost in our weird silences.”
I nervously laughed, “I was just thinking about … um … ” I paused, “How do you like your eggs?” I questioned.
She deadpanned, “Cooked.”
I pressed my lips together, really trying to hold back the laugh that started in the pit of my stomach.
I looked away with a shaky laugh, “Amora, could you get off the floor please?”
“Could you give me like five minutes?”
“Why?”
She sighed, “Don't ask questions that you don't want answers to.”
I thought about what she meant by that and I immediately regretted the image that appeared in my mind.
I blushed, “S—Sure … S—Sorry”
I decided to pick up the broken plates and the eggs that were on the floor, I didn't have to worry about the sausages because Thor was eating them.
I took the mess into the kitchen where I disposed it into the trash can. After I had washed my hands, I decided to scout for more breakfast foods in the time Amora needed to herself.
Once I had all the ingredients that I needed, I turned on some music on the radio stuffed in the corner part of the counter.
I danced to the beat as I scrambled the eggs in one pan and flipped the bacon in another.
“Smells good in he—” she coughed, “I'll be back.”
I turned around, “Where are you going?”
She deadpanned, “To lie down again.”
When she actually started walking back into the living room, I quickly rushed towards her and walked in front of her to stop her from advancing, “I highly recommend staying, besides I'm making your favorite … cooked eggs.”
She smiled, “How could I refuse?”
Returning the smile, I placed my hands on her shoulders and directed her back into the kitchen, to which she did not disapprove.
Cooking with Amora turned out to be quite fun, I never thought doing the simplest tasks could actually be enjoyable.
As we sat at the table, occasionally making small talk about our likes and dislikes, Amora suddenly got quiet.
I tilted my head, “Are you okay?”
She nodded, pathetically at that.
“Are you sure?”
I was very concerned as to why she suddenly shut down when all this morning she had been chatty and seemingly had fun.
She spoke, “Why'd you kiss me?”
My eyes went wide as I moved the spoonful of eggs away from my opened mouth.
I placed the spoon back onto the plate and kept my eyes focused on the food; I was dreading this question all morning but ultimately knew it would brought up eventually.
I opened my mouth to say something but no words managed to escape, so I closed it while I found the right thing to say.
When I thought I had the answer, I opened my mouth but again, no words came out. I closed my mouth as I scratched my head searching for the answer to her question.
“Why did you kiss me?”
“Why? I didn't really know why. I mean, sure I wanted to shut her up but that didn't seem like the real answer I was looking for.”
I was pulled out of my trance from the sound of the chair moving. Amora had set her plate in the kitchen sink, cleaning it with soap and water as I watched on.
I studied her from the table as she finished cleaning up after herself, which she didn't have to do. She placed the plate on the rack to the side as her face showed no emotion.
I turned back around to face my plate again, searching for something to say.
I found my answer not from my head but from my heart and I couldn't believe I was actually going to say it.
I closed my eyes as the words escaped my mouth, “Because some part of me likes you.”
I listened as the shuffling stopped making the entire house completely silent, neither one of us even breathed.
I silently slapped myself with the palm of my hand against my forehead, mentally cursing myself out for being so stupid.
What a stupid thing to say when I wasn't sure how I actually meant it. What if some part of me actually liked Amora and now admitting that to her would jeopardize our friendship that we made so quickly?
I was desperate to break the silence, I whispered, “Please say something.”
She spoke, “In what way do you like me?”
I mentally groaned as I slouched in my sitting position.
Why on earth did she have to ask the questions I couldn't honestly answer?
I closed my eyes again as I rested my elbows on the table, placing my hands to my forehead. I answered, “I'm not entirely sure but I don't want to lose you as a friend. So with that said, I'm sorry.”
“Sorry for what?”
I knew she was close to me now but I couldn't bring myself to actually look at her, I was so embarrassed.
I heard the chair next to me slide out, “Why are you so embarrassed?”
I scrunched my face, how could she read my expression so easily? Was it that obvious?
“Look, if me being here is too much for you, I can always leave.”
I grunted, “Don't go.”
Wow, I'm pathetic.
“Okay. But eventually you're going to have to look at me.”
She was right, eventually I had to look at her which I was dreading the moment I would look straight into her beautiful gray eyes.
Amora helped me speed up the process as she peeled my hands from my forehead, gently placing them on the table. She used my chin to turn my face towards hers as my eyes met hers, my heart started to race.
I couldn't pinpoint one emotion I felt during our staring contest, for I was feeling them all, we sat extremely close, which I didn't mind, in fact I wished to be closer.
I couldn't tell what Amora was thinking but some part of me believed that she might like me a little more than I had thought.
However, our moment was short-lived as a knock on my front door pulled us back to reality.
Amora sat back in her chair awkwardly rubbing the back of her neck as she looked away from me.
I nervously laughed, “I'll see who is at the door.”
When I pulled it open, I immediately fainted.
There was a loud thud as I stood from the kitchen table to see what it was, when I turned around the corner, I saw McKenzie lying on the floor. I didn't even have time to react when I was thrown from the kitchen directly coming into contact with a wall.
I groaned as the pain set in, immediately feeling my throat being crushed from the hand of my attacker.
I clawed at the hands wrapped around my neck in attempt to remove it, but they were much stronger than I was.
They hissed, “You were a fool to leave Vudos, Princess Amora.”
I couldn't focus on my powers, being choked took all of my attention as I felt my breath seize.
Suddenly, the grip around my neck loosened as my attacker whipped around with a low growl.
I peeked around him to see McKenzie holding a frying pan; fear was visible in her eyes.
I sat against the wall trying to recover from the lack of oxygen as the man advanced towards McKenzie, later joined by the female dressed in camouflage.
The female caught McKenzie by her neck as she hoisted her further into the air. McKenzie struggled to get out of the hands of her attacker, her legs swinging as she tried to kick her off.
The female smiled, “Such a pretty girl, it's no wonder she chose you.”
The male snickered, “With a face like that, I don't suppose it'll take long.”
McKenzie breathed out, slapping the arm of the female, “Let go of me, you baboon.”
I was seriously fed up with being attacked almost on a daily basis, all I wanted was to come here and find true love, but no, these freaking beasts thought I had an alternative future.
I finally collected my energy, mostly because I couldn't bear to watch anyone hurting McKenzie. Finding the strength I needed, I stood, “You heard the lady, let her go or you shall find death coming to collect your soul.”
I used my invisible force to squeeze both of their necks, balling my fists to close in on their throats more. Then with a flick of the wrist, I sent the male flying into the wall.
I walked over to the female with my entire body engulfed in a flame; I was certainly going to fry her ass for hurting McKenzie, even just for looking at her.
I grabbed her by the shirt, balling her cloth material in my fists as the colors swirled in my eyes, “I shall ruin you for what you have done.”
She cackled, “One day you'll be useful, and when that day comes, I can't wait for our kin to watch you die.”
I snarled, “Sorry to disappoint ungrateful swine but I can't die.”
She hissed, “In time my child, there will come a day when you see the last of life, and when you do, we shall rise and you, your kin will fall.”
I growled, “Your death will not be remembered for you will die in my hands for trying to kill my friend.”
She shook her head with a smile, “My kin had already honored my bravery for my fate rests in your hands, child.”
I was disgusted with these beasts or things coming here, ruining my life amongst others, so I threw her against the wall.
I advanced towards her shifting into the beast as I punched my arm straight into her chest, she roared as my claw fished for her dead heart.
I locked onto it, feeling the organ against my claw as my eyes bore into the female’s dark eyes. With a great amount of pressure, I slowly squeezed her heart as she growled in pain; I wanted her to at least suffer a little before I finally crushed her empty heart.
She smiled devilishly, “We will meet again, your highness.”
In full rage, I clamped down against her heart watching the life leave her eyes. I pulled my arm out of her body, letting the ashes fall from my hand as she fell limp to the floor before bursting into dust.
Then I looked at the male that tried to escape, with one hand I waved it over him as I transported him to Constantine's place.
Feeling completely satisfied with my own doing, I turned to McKenzie, who was staring at me shocked at what she just witnessed.
I took a step forward, but immediately regretted it when she flinched, I guess I must have moved too quickly for her liking because she coward under her arms visibly shaking.
I sighed, “I know you have questions, I'd be more than willing to explain myself to you, but I must attend to my business.”
She shouted, “Who are you?!”
I took a cautious step forward, sighing,
“McKenzie … I don't mean you any harm.”
I observed the blonde from a respectable distance as she remained in her cowardly position. After hearing her silently sob, I continued to advance until I had her wrapped around my arms.
She sniffled, “I'm scared.”
I couldn’t blame the girl; I'd be too if I watched a girl turn into a disgusting monster.
The closest thing I’d ever gotten to that was eating breakfast with Fayette every morning, she really liked her bacon.
I asked, “Would you like to join me? It might be safer if you were supervised.”
She nodded, “Can Thor come?”
I shrugged, “Why not.”
We arrived at Constantine's place moments later as I stormed through the main entrance with Thor in my arms and McKenzie trailing behind.
Fayette and Perry screamed when they saw Thor squirming happily in my arms, “What is that?!”
Perry took cover as we approached, I rolled my eyes, “It's McKenzie's dog.” I gave him to Fayette who looked less afraid of it, “Play with him, I’ve got unfinished business to attend to.”
Fayette raised a brow while petting Thor, “Why is McKenzie here?”
“She knows.” I continued to advance forward as McKenzie struggled to keep up, “Where's Constantine?” I yelled over my shoulder.
Fayette yelled back, “Office.”
As I approached Constantine's office door, I kicked it open not caring about the destruction I had committed.
Looking around the room, I saw Constantine staring at the view from his desk chair, appearing to be conflicted at the package I gifted him with.
Without even looking, he made a motion towards us, “You can come around over her McKenzie.”
I looked at Constantine with a raised brow, “How do you know her name?”
He nervously laughed, getting up from his chair, “Never mind that, we have bigger things to address.”
I smiled, “May I?”
He allowed me to step up first; McKenzie took a seat at one of the tables with Constantine as I cracked my knuckles.
I was ready for my first interrogation.
A few punches later, I got nowhere with gaining intel on them as to why they were here and what do they had planned. So as you probably already know, I was growing irritating by every minute this bloke wouldn't talk, so I stabbed his leg for motivation.
Even with stabbing, punching and kicking, he still wouldn't talk. Whatever they knew, it had to be something big, and it involved me.
I rubbed my temples in frustration before my hair caught fire and the beast made a quick appearance causing the man to smile, “Such beauty.”
Constantine guided me aside, “Maybe there is a better approach to this, and allow me.”
So I stepped down, taking a seat next to McKenzie, causing her to glance worriedly at me from time to time.
I rested my head on my hand, glancing at her, “Can you stop looking at me like that?”
She quickly looked away as I focused on Constantine and his method to get this atrocious creature to talk.
Constantine got in his face, placing both hands on the armrests of the chair, “What's your story? Why are you here?”
The beast looked me dead in the eyes, “A story? I'll tell you a story.” He laughed, “Once there was a princess that ran away from home, a huge mistake for her but a worthy honor for some, little did she know, she was helpful in the future.”
With a wave of my hand he burst into ashes, Constantine turned around and yelled, “Amora we needed him!”
I shrugged, “I was getting annoyed with him, plus it's no use, this bloke would rather die than tell us anything.” I stood along with McKenzie, “I should have ended him earlier if I knew he was going to be a pain in my ass.”
Constantine looked at me worriedly, “I fear for you, there were things I don't know and I require certain intel, but I cannot get that if you keep blowing up our prisoners.”
I crossed my arms, “So what, I'll get you a new one, it's not like this will be the last time I get attacked.”
McKenzie spoke, retrieving an item from her pocket, “I don't mean to intrude, but I still have the syringe Amora was attacked with.”
I raised a brow at her, “Why do you have that?” I pointed to the syringe in her hand.
She shrugged, “I thought you were on drugs, I was eventually going to ask you about it but I can clearly see that you're not on drugs.”
I internally smiled knowing McKenzie had actually truly cared for my well-being.
I laughed, “You honestly thought I was on drugs?”
She shrugged, “What? I was worried all right? How was I supposed to know, you were … ”
She gestured up and down my body, “You know … ” she looked away shyly.
Constantine sighed, “I guess we will have to rely on the syringe to see what the beasts are up to.” He said taking the syringe from McKenzie, “Please leave, I have works to do.”
Constantine hurriedly walked away with the syringe in hand, leaving McKenzie and I to silently exit Constantine's office. I decided to take her to my room because I didn't want Perry or Fayette to ask a billion questions right now.
I opened the door, “Sorry, it's not much but as you already know, I'm not from here.”
She walked around shyly with her hands locked in front of her, “Honestly, I kind of expected this, it's simple. Something I thought you were, but clearly are not.”
I sat on my bed, “You have to admit, I was so cool.”
She joined me, “I always thought there was something off about you.”
I side glanced at her, “How so?”
She smiled, “It was actually almost obvious. You and Fayette were interesting to begin with, nobody ever attends our school the last months of their senior year, so to say, and you pique my interest.”
She paused, tucking a hair behind her ear, “There was this one day I thought I saw your eyes change color, like not a human color but like pink? Then when you were late, which you and Fayette are anything but quiet, especially Fayette and the fact I sit directly in front of you, I saw your foot freeze over. Then at the park there was a trail of smoke following you.”
Wow, and here I thought she hadn't paid any mind to me, I also thought I did it discreetly. I wondered how many other people noticed and if so, who?
I smiled, “So you've been watching me?”
She clicked her tongue, “I prefer observing, Amora.”
I shrugged, “Redundant really.”
She fell to her back, covering her face with her hands, “Oh geez, I just realized how creepy I sound.”
I laughed, “Why? Have you recently been in someone's tree?”
She giggled, “No, but I guess that makes two of us.”
I brought myself to my side as I used my elbow for support, resting my head on my hand, “I guess it does.”
She peaked at me through the slit of her fingers, “Did you see me beat that thing over the head with a frying pan?”
I nodded, “Yea, but don't ever do that again, it's too dangerous for a mundane to get involved.”
She poked my shoulder, “But it helped you, right?”
I rolled my eyes, “I was in total control, and I’d have you know.”
She smiled, stretching her hands out as if she was tracing the rainbow, “McKenzie, the magnificent panhandler.”
I gave her a toothy grin, “Whatever makes you happy, McKenzie.”
She whispered, “McKenzie what?”
I rolled my eyes, mocking her, “McKenzie, the magnificent panhandler.”
She rolled to her stomach resulting in our faces being inches apart as I lay on my side, she grinned as soon as my eyes locked with hers, “You're truly amazing, Amora.”
I raised my brows, “Amazing enough to break up with David?”
She bit her cheek, “Let's not get carried away.”
I shrugged my shoulders, “Worth a shot.”
She continued to gaze into my eyes, “When you talk like that, sometimes I think that you actually have feelings for me.”
I cringed at her words causing my heart to beat at an irregular pace as I fell to my back not wanting to be that close to her, which she took as an invitation to get closer?
I cleared my throat, “Oh yeah … um gosh no, that would be weird … me having a crush on you? I think not,” I chuckled nervously.
She eyed me weirdly, “Right, because we are friends.”
I was getting nervous as I was trapped under her curious gaze, but I was seriously getting annoyed hearing the word friend a lot.
I awkwardly answered, “Yup, there's that word again.”
She dipped her head closer, “Yup … best friends.”
I shook my head slightly, clenching my teeth, “Glad to hear that word again, I was beginning to forget what we are.”
She wiggled her brows, “What's up my buddy … my bud … my friend?”
I rolled her over and covered her mouth, “Okay that's enough of that. We wouldn't want to wear out the word and its meaning now would we?”
It was miserable enough to be this close to her and have had the luxury of kissing her. I couldn't possibly tell her how I actually felt knowing all she wants to be was just friends.
When I hadn't moved my hand away, McKenzie rudely licked it, so I wiped my hand on her pant leg.
That was so nasty.
It had been a few hours of McKenzie and I simply talking to each other. She had been invested in my life story, so I showed her the necklaces around my neck that symbolized my parents’ fractions.
We were currently on my floor in our infamous sitting position where McKenzie sat on my lap with her legs around me; she lazily placed her arms over my shoulders.
I was in the middle of displaying some of my magic that she had asked me to demonstrate for her, so I grew a rose and turned it into glass. I held it out for her, “Here.”
She played with her fingers as she hesitated to take the item from my hand, glancing between me and the flower.
I quickly added, “Don't worry, it's just a friend rose, you don't have to accept it if you don't want it.”
After my statement, she gladly accepted it, “Thank you.” She smiled as she examined it, “You even placed our names on it.”
I smiled back, “For the friendship, just so we are clear.”
She coughed, “Yeah, won’t like any crazy thought lurking around here.” She said pointing to her head.
I nodded once, “That’s right.”
Her voice got higher, “None, what so ever.”
I agreed, “Correct.”
She nervously laughed, “Yup, you know me; I wouldn't want those absurd thoughts invading my head cavity.”
I deadpanned, “Most likely.”
She held her hands in front of her with a look of disgust, “Trust me, you probably wouldn't want those insane ideas either.”
I pat her shoulder, “I trust you.”
She rolled her eyes, “Good to know we are on the same page, both of us not wanting to flip that darn page.”
I chuckled at the frustrated blonde, “Agreed, stay where it's comfortable.”
She whined, “Is that all you're going to do is agree?”
“I'm afraid to answer that.”
My statement had McKenzie in stitches as she laughed wildly in my lap, which I found to be the cutest thing ever.
I wasn't sure what to make of her strange behavior in the last few minutes, but I can tell you I had never felt this awkward in my life.
We mainly sat in silence after McKenzie and my odd conversation, until suddenly she spoke out of the blue, “Even if someone had, hypothetically spoken of course, had the smallest interest in the other person, like let's say you like me.”
