Chapter 4
Emma
"Okay I know you've been defensive since your father died, but this is starting to get a little ridiculous", Sophia says.
"Yeah, John has barely spoken two words to you, and you won't even give him a chance", Belle says.
"Lucas and the boys have been hanging out with him a lot these past three days", Julia looks at me with curious eyes while speaking these words. Something more is coming; I can hear it in her voice. "They say he's super nice and want him in the group".
I can't believe Julia just said those words. Why do they want Carter in the group? Isn't it enough people as it is in our circle of friends? I think it is, but no one will listen to me, that I know.
"Hell no", I say.
"Oh, come on, give him a chance", Mia says.
"Why?" I ask, asking them to give me a reason to give him a chance.
"Because he hasn't done anything to intentionally provoke you", Julia says. "You just feel provoked because of no reason at all really".
"I do too have reasons!" I say.
"Name one", Sophia dares me.
I stay silent. Okay, maybe they're right. Maybe I don't have any reasons, but I really don't care. I don't like Carter. Do I really have to have reasons? Can't I dislike someone without a reason? I think so.
"Fine, I don't have any, I just dislike him", I say.
"Why?"
"Because I don't want him to think that everyone loves him. And I'm still sure that he's a big obnoxious yucky celebrity", I say and the girls sigh. I know that I'm stubborn, but that is one of my strengths.
I'm not one of these naive girls. I'm just not. I'm not tricked easily. Actually, I'm never tricked. I never let anyone fool me.
We walk into the cafeteria and buy our lunch. We sit down with the guys at the table they're sitting at. And of course, Carter is there.
"Did the girls tell you that..." Lucas starts but I interrupt him.
"Yes Luke, they did", I say and dip one of my fries in mayonnaise.
I always have mayonnaise with my fries, it's a million times better than ketchup. You can't even compare it.
"Oh, cool I love fries and mayonnaise", Carter says. "I thought no one else did, I've never met anyone who likes mayonnaise with their fries before".
I raise both my eyebrows. Too surprised to be angry.
"Huh!" I say putting the fries in my mouth, the tip with the mayonnaise first. "Reaaaally?"
"Yup", he says. "Not even my brothers like it and we're related".
"You've got brothers?" I ask. I didn't know that maybe I should've, because he's been in a lot of gossip magazines over the years.
"Two", Lucas says.
"James and Logan", Gavin says.
I look at them and raise my right eyebrow. They have been hanging out with him a lot, haven't they? Ugh, whatever. I dip more fries in the mayonnaise and keep quiet. I just listen to what everyone is talking about.
Finally, I put my teeth in my delicious burger. I love burgers. It's like the best food in the world. Especially McDonalds cheeseburger, I mean oh my god, they are heavenly.
"That's a big burger", I hear Carter say.
"Problem with that Carter?" I hiss, inviting him into a fight.
But it seems like he doesn't want to fight. He just chuckles. "No problem, just amazed, never seen a girl more in love with her burger", he says.
"Emma loves her junk food", Chris says.
"Yet she manages to keep slim", Gavin says.
"And sexy as hell!" A boy passing our table says. "Her booty is so damn smackable!"
I quickly turn around and punch my knuckle on his crotch. "Say that again and I'll cut them off instead of punching them!" I hiss at him. He wines in pain and hurries away.
"And she's badass", Lucas says.
"Yeah it seems like she can take care of herself", Carter agrees.
"Hell yeah I can", I say. "I live in a world where girls are being seen as s*x objects, I have to be able to take care of myself, it's very important".
"These girls have major respect in this school", Isaac says.
"Well if we didn't have you boys, we would be considered s*x toys", Julia says. "With you around, they won't go too far".
"You're welcome", Chris says.
"Yeah right, like I need your help", I mock.
"Okay maybe you don't", Mia laughs.
I laugh. I love my friends. But it's true. I can defend myself. I'm good at it.
"We have to go now", Julia says standing up. "Otherwise we'll be late for cheerleader practice".
"You girls cheer?" Carter asks.
"Oh yeah you bet they do", Lucas says and lick his lower lip, looking at Julia. "And I'll tell yah when they shake those skirts mmmhmmm".
I stand up and walk up to Lucas. I push him off the chair.
"Owww", he whines.
The girls laugh and I do a high five with Julia.
"See you later 'Lukie'", I say and give him a blow kiss.
Julia laughs and hooks her arm around mine as we start walking out of the cafeteria with Mia, Sophia and Belle, as all five of us waddle our asses extra much. Laughing as we walk.
Boys can be so stupid sometimes. I know that the boys in our group only jokes, but it can be a little annoying sometimes. But they always mean well, I know they do.
