“What are you up to, William?” Damien asked, lifting his feet on the table. His relaxed posture and calm expression didn’t fool William. His former friend was anything but at ease, and this was nowhere close to a casual conversation. William thought for a moment, choosing his words carefully. “I don’t know what you mean.” “Sure you do,” Damien snorted. “I’ve sent two men to keep an eye on you in case you need a backup—now I can’t establish any contact with them. Do you know anything about that?” “I never asked for backup,” William replied. “That’s not the point,” Damien snapped. “What did you do to them?” “I did meet them in New York and I asked them very politely to stop poking their noses in my personal affairs.
