Chapter Two

Footsteps. Heavy, slow, calculating. The air was stale, reeked of blood and sweat. Anna stood with shaky legs, her back pressed against the cold and hard wall while he towered over her. Her eyes were closed shut but she could feel his presence, she could hear his breath and his scent...She could smell it, she inhaled deeper not expecting the sense of calm that replaced the dread in her stomach. There was a finger under her chin in the next second, lifting her head up, his warm finger, burning her skin. “Open your eyes Wolf, let me see them,” There was something intoxicating about this wolf’s scent, something she’d never perceived from Yaakov, the Alpha that owned her or Jack, the Beta who never liked to see a smile on her face, or any other wolf she’d come across. It was like peppermint, lavender? Vanilla? Roses? Just what exactly was that scent that was so mouth wateringly good? She opened her eyes, a tear escaped and slid down her cheek. She was met by sea green eyes. Darkened with no emotions and they glowed like orbs in the night. She could see it in his eyes, she could feel it from his presence. An Alpha. A slight gasp left his parted lips when his eyes met hers. Maybe it was the glow in them that awed him, it always had that effect on people. He was tall, taller than any other wolf she’d seen, he had alluring eyes and full pink lips with a face that put the always prideful Alpha Yaakov to shame. He had a sharp jawline, dark and well trimmed stubble covered his cheeks, a buzz cut on his head, his hair as dark as the emotions in his eyes. He was perfection itself to Anna in that moment and for a split second, she felt like he was there to save her. His head tilted to the side like he had a hard time understanding her appearance, she didn’t blame him. Anna had long white hair that reached her thighs and red glowing eyes that gave one the illusion of her being something straight from hell. Maybe she was, but he didn’t seem to care. He didn’t have that guarded or scared look like the others, instead he looked awed…fascinated even, that gaze almost made her put her guard down. Was he really here to save her? To bring her out of this torture she’s been buried in for years? “You’re The Wolf Spirit,” he said. His gaze settled on her lips and then shifted back to her eyes. “I am Kane, the Alpha of GreyThorn pack,” But unfortunately, Anna knew she was wrong. There is no way an Alpha with such a strong presence would be here to save her. “You will no longer belong to Yaakov,” Anna had longed to hear those words from someone one day, a day she would finally be free from the Alpha who had forcefully marked her and wanted to claim her soul as his. She wished that this man would be the one, the one to finally tell her that her freedom was only a step away. No, he was here to claim her as his. “You now belong to me,” he said and in that moment, Anna feared for her life, this man was not Yaakov but she had a feeling that he was way worse. “No!” she heard herself say. Her voice was shaky and even her clenched fists at her sides were unsteady. She was still afraid. Most especially of that empty look in his eyes, the way he lifted a brow after hearing her speak. “I...I will no longer belong to anyone!” Anna was tired of being tossed around like a piece of property instead of being treated like an actual living breathing werewolf like the rest of them. Everyone wanted to own her, not caring about what she wanted. Everyone wanted the strength of the wolf spirit, not caring that it would cost her everything including her life. “I’d rather die here with the rest of the pack than become yours!” Anna said, her tone leveled but yet every single one of her emotions could be heard. The closer she stood to the Alpha, the harder and faster her heart pounded. It was so intense that she wanted to move away from him, create distance between them but she didn’t or rather, she couldn’t bring herself to. “You can’t take her from me!” came a snarl from behind Kane. “I got her fair and square, she belongs to me!” Alpha Yaakov stood behind Kane, bloodied, shaking and looked like he would fall at any given moment. The pride that once raised his shoulders was now gone and that handsome face he thought he could use to get any woman he wanted now looked like it had been pounded into a pulp. Yet there was anger and hatred in his blue eyes, he refused to let go of Anna despite the obvious fact that he’d lost. Bullhorn pack has fallen. Why wasn’t she as happy as she’d hoped? “I wasn’t asking,” Kane said coldly, his answer aimed at both Anna and Yaakov. “I was telling you...” he looked at her with an intensity in his gaze that made her gasp and weekend her knees, “You belong to me now,” He didn’t sound amused, he didn’t sound like he was joking...He knew what he wanted and he knew he had the power to take it, the confidence in his tone made Anna slowly lose hope. She didn’t want to be any one’s prisoner, not after what she’s gone through for the past four years. There was a growl behind Kane, the sound of bones snapping and a howl. One of challenge. Yaakov had shifted, he was challenging the Alpha of GreyThorn to a duel. Anna’s heart came to a stand still. She feared what might happen to Kane if he accepted the battle but then again, if he was strong enough to bring down an entire pack in just one afternoon, then he was strong enough to kill the Alpha of bullhorn. Kane turned around slowly, his arms crossed over his chest as he eyed the shifted wolf in front of him. Yaakov was bigger than most, had dark brown fur that might be mistaken as red, his blue eyes narrowed as his fangs were bared and his claws pushed deeper into the ground like he was ready to attack. Kane scoffed. Then a dark chuckle rumbled out from his chest as he took a step forward. Anna feeling the distance between them, her entire body almost lurched forward just because she didn’t want to lose his scent. Anna couldn’t understand it. In the few seconds she tried to make reason of why her body reacted the way it did, Kane unfolded his arms and reached into his waistband. Pulling out a gun and pointing it at Yaakov’s wolf. “I’m not one for games Yaakov, and I don’t want your pack—” Then he pulled the trigger. Anna gasped in horror and her palms went over her lips. The bullet went straight into the wolf’s head, without so much as a growl, his body fell to the floor with a heavy sound. “I only want her,” Kane said. He turned around, green eyes met hers again...His gaze pinning her to the wall. There was a slight furrow between his brows. He inhaled and then shook his head, his actions confused her but she didn’t move and neither did she say a word. He walked closer, so close that their noses were touching and their breaths mingled with one another. Then he inhaled again. This time his eyes closed and his entire body rigid with tension. A growl escaped his throat and his eyes opened. There was a fire in them she hadn’t seen before. If looks could kill, Anna knew she would’ve been set ablaze right in that moment. He looked angry. Why was he angry? “Mate…” he said through gritted teeth. “Mine!” His?
