Felicity would be the success of the Season – a beauty who had landed the greatest matrimonial catch available. Because he knew when he was defeated, he turned and walked from the room. As he closed the door behind him, he heard Felicity call his name, but he did not go back. He ran down the stairs two at a time. That evening he joined a Regiment which was going out to India almost immediately. Because he was so hurt and had, he believed, a wound that would never heal, he volunteered to join the Great Game as soon as he reached India.
