Alex POV
“I thought you have moved on already. You do not have to trouble yourself on crashing the wedding.” These were my thoughts while looking out of the window from my suite.
Lindsay and I got together five years ago, when we attended our graduate studies in Stanford University. She had been working as a bank officer moving on her way up, while I have been managing my own software company, WilTech, the biggest software company in the world.
Two years ago, Lindsay started to push for us to get married soon. She said she was not getting any younger. At that time, we were already thirty-three. In shock of being put on the spot, I asked her to wait for another year. She agreed hesitantly, but with grudges. We started to argue about it, then would eventually patch things up. Don’t think that I didn’t love her. I did. Very much so. I did not even finish the one year that I asked from her when I proposed.
I had arranged for her and my family to be in Santorini for one weekend for the marriage proposal. It was going to be a surprise. Going there, Lindsay and I took my private jet, while our families took dad’s. Dad was a hotelier, by the way, he owned several hotels.
The day of the proposal had been going well. However, the night had been my worst night of my life. I booked a whole restaurant for the affair. Our families hiding somewhere in the background. Lindsay and I were on the deck over-looking the sea. Then it was time, I went down on one knee, opened the small ring box, and popped the question “Will you marry me?”. She was so shocked. Then she was crying and shaking her head. I didn’t know what she meant by shaking her head. And then, all of a sudden, she ran away.
I was dumbfounded! I was not able to move. I stood up and the next thing I know I was on my way back to San Francisco… by myself. It turned out that Lindsay was planning to break up with me after the trip. You know why? Because she had been seeing another man! A man who she had been seeing for a month already. A man who had already promised marriage to her. She replaced me with an older man, who is an executive at a mediocre IT consulting firm. I had my team look into that company, and probably we would have to expand further. In other words, I have plans on buying that consulting firm.
Since the failed proposal, I did not reach out to Lindsay. Many times, she had tried to talk to me, but I declined. Her parents had been apologizing to me and saying that we can still save our relationship. Relationship my ass! The rejection took a blow on me. It was like a hard slap on my face. More than the heartbreak, the rejection hurt my pride. I was not able to function fully and my parents suggested for me to take a break.
I had decided to hide not too far away, and so I landed in Santa Cruz, my mom’s birthplace. Mom’s friend heard that I will be staying in the city for a while and asked if I could teach Calculus in high school. I said yes because of the challenge and they said it would only be for a few months, while the original teacher was recuperating from stroke. Although I was to stay there a few weeks only, it took me roughly ten months to get out. If not for a certain girl, I would have cast off women forever.
But I have to do one more thing. Hurt Lindsay Brooks, the same way she hurt me.
Here I am in paradise, just arrived last night. I had been planning on crashing the wedding of Lindsay Brooks, which will be held in a few days in no other than Wil Hotel, Honolulu. Of all hotels, she chose one that I own. Didn’t she do her research?
Dad had turned over to me the hotel business a few months ago. Yes, while I was in Santa Cruz, I was still able to manage the business offsite. I had a team do the rebranding and renamed the chain of hotels to “Wil Hotel”, so that it can be associated with the success of my software company, WilTech.
How was I able to know that she will get married? From a friend of a friend of a friend. Grapevine for short. I took it on me to have my secretary check the schedule with the hotel, then yes, it was confirmed.
It might be a weekend, but I was still replying to emails the whole day. Checking plans and budgets. Been so busy that I had skipped lunch altogether, and now it’s already three in the afternoon. I went down to scout for something to eat, when this coffee shop on the ground floor caught my attention.
I went inside and was about to order when I my gaze fell on the lady in front of the shop. She was holding her phone, but I cannot be wrong. I was feeling excited that I was not able to stop myself from opening the door and come out, just when she also stepped forward bumping her head on my chest. I immediately hooked my arm around her to prevent her from falling. It was funny really. In less than a year, we were in the same position. Her eyes went wild, her mouth in a big ‘O’.
“We better stop meeting this way, Ms. Owens.” Our faces so near each other, that I could see her blush profusely. I straightened ourselves and made sure that she can stand on her own before I released her.
“Mr. Wilson.” She whispered. My d**k seemed to remember her voice, as it twitched immediately.
“It was a surprise seeing you here in Honolulu, Ms. Owens.” Chanel was still blushing. “Maybe we could catch up? Would you like to have coffee with me? Come on, my treat.” I hope my smile will work on her.
“Sure, Sir.” I took her inside and ordered coffee and sandwiches for the two of us.
“How have you been, Ms. Owens? I did not see you on your graduation.” I asked her, while she was putting sugar on her coffee.
“It’s a long story, Mr. Wilson.”
“Class is over. We are out of school already. Call me Alex. I am not your teacher anymore. Anyway, I have the time. We can extend our chat until dinner if you like.” She peered up at me and smiled.
“I will call you Alex, if you call me Chanel. I am not your student anymore.” She giggled after that.
“Sure, Chanel. So, what happened?” I asked curiously.
“Umm… my mom died on the night before the graduation, Sir. I mean Alex.” She went silent after and could not look at me. I think she was controlling herself not to cry. I held her hand and squeezed it.
“That is so heartbreaking, Chanel. I am sorry about that. I was out of Santa Cruz right after the graduation. Perhaps that was why I have not heard of it. I would have come to you if I was there.”
“Thank you. I’m now feeling a lot better. Just got a few things to fix.”
“So, you’re in Honolulu to unwind?”
“You could say that, Alex.” She smiled sadly at me.
We had started to talk about the places here in Honolulu and some of the other places that we wanted to visit. I have enjoyed the time with her that I did not notice that we had stayed in the coffee shop for four hours.
“Can I invite you to dinner, Chanel? Are you staying in this hotel?” I wanted to spend more time with her and get to know her more.
“No. I’m staying at a hostel about fifteen minutes away from here.” She seemed embarrassed saying that. But what bothered me was she was staying in a hostel. Was she alone here in Hawaii?
“A hostel, Chanel? Wait. Who are you with in this trip?” I started to interrogate her.
“I, uh, I went here by myself.”
“Does your father know? Any relative? I’m just worried about your safety, Chanel. Please don’t get me wrong.” She can’t seem to answer me, so I took it upon myself to usher her to my room, where we can talk privately.
“You’re staying in the presidential suite?” She looked around the big space, then ran to the window to look out. “Wow. You have a beautiful view here.”
“I know.” I whispered beside her, while I stared at her face. I don’t know if she really didn’t hear me or if she was just pretending that she did not hear what I said, because she did not react at all.
“So, let me just call for food service, then we can talk. Okay?” She nodded. "Anything you want to eat?"
"Nothing specific. I'm okay with anything. Thank you." I nodded and went to call room service.
And soon Chanel was crying her heart out to me. She had just finished telling me her story, from the time her dad left them up to the time her mom died. How can her dad be so cruel to his family? She revealed that the reason she was here because she thought she will be able to see her father in this hotel. We were on the couch, her head on my shoulder. My arms went around her, rubbing her back and her arms. I kissed the top of her head and tried my best to comfort her.
We had dinner and she was back to being bubbly. She scrutinized every corner of the suite. I still did not tell her that I am the owner of the hotel. It will just come out on its own. I asked her to stay in the suite with me. There are two rooms anyway. I could stay in the smaller room; she can have the bigger one. She seemed excited, probably it was because of the experience of staying in this kind of room that persuaded her to stay.
“I promise to take you back to your hostel tomorrow morning after breakfast. How about that? Don’t forget to update your friend. She might be worried already.” She had informed me also about her new found friends.
It was already close to midnight when I ushered Chanel to the bedroom to sleep. I told her she can use anything from the bathroom and that she can borrow some of my clothes to wear to bed. I stepped out of the room to take my shower separately. When I was done, I went back to her.
“Chanel?” I softly knocked on the door. She opened it and let me come inside. She was wearing one of my t-shirts and boxers. She walked up and down the room, modeling the clothes for me.
“Didn’t know that my shirts and boxers will look good on a woman.” She laughed and sat down at the bed.
“Are you tucking me in?” She laughed again. “I’m too old for that.”
“I just want to see you all settled in.” And hoping I could get a kiss. Or not. I have to stop thinking like this, otherwise I have to take another shower.
“Thank you, Alex. This is the first time in a long while that I really felt cared for. It was nice seeing a familiar face, even if we were not really close back then.”
I knelt in front of her then patted her knee. “Everything will get better soon, Chanel. You have me to back you up.”
She smiled then laid down on the bed. “Good night, Chanel.”
I stood up and was about to go out, when she held my hand. “Could you sleep beside me, Alex? Please?”
